Officeworks Delivery [Don't Contact The Customer Policy]

I purchased a Chromecast 2 on Officeworks recently and I thought it was a good deal since it included free same day delivery. It turned out to be quite the headache for me..

Apparently the delivery people have a policy of not contacting the customer when they reach the address. They just see if they can leave the parcel safely and if not, they just take the parcel back. I live in an Apartment building which has a security gate which can be opened only by the residents or if someone buzzes the intercom and opens the gate. I even left instructions for the delivery guy to buzz my apartment number on the intercom and even let them know its ok to call me on my mobile number.

So anyways, apparently the delivery guy came by on the first day and could not "find me" so he took the parcel back. I actually decided to work from home to collect the parcel and was always available to answer the intercom and my mobile number. I called up customer care and they informed me that the delivery people have a policy of not calling customers on mobile numbers. So they rescheduled the delivery for the next day and this time I even stuck sticky notes on how to use the intercom next to the security gate. But Alas, they came and didnt try to buzz or call me and took the parcel back for the second time. So I finally called and told them to cancel my order and issue a refund.

I have had furniture delivered, tradies come over, groceries delivered before at my address and never had such an issue and this is the first time I'm hearing of a policy that does not permit calling a customer at their address. I'm curious, how do people manage to get their parcels delivered by officeworks?

is it a officeworks policy or is it the parcel delivery company policy ? , its actually pretty common for them not to call people up when delivering parcels. even if there is a mobile number provided.

    • Really? It's been only a year since I migrated to Oz but that seems counter productive. Why would they not contact the customer while making a delivery? and y with only electronics/Officeworks delivery? Furniture/grocery/Tradies don't seem limited by this policy

      • I had similar issue recently with StarTrack, I cancelled everything on a day to get a parcel and the delivery was not even attempted, the guy took it straight to auspost and left it there. I think it depends on a person, I had some couriers calling me before delivering, others would just leave the parcel at the door, some wouldn't show up at all.

      • haha that made me chuckle, i can just imagine them leaving you a collect your tradie at the local post office card.
it has to do with size of item as well , certain items ( to large / heavy ) the post office rejects so the courier can not leave a collect at post office card.

  • Officetwerks is in my bad books at the moment. As in majorly. Almost enough for me to not want to help you because it helps them by proxy. Seething hatred and vindictiveness aside, here's two possible solutions:

    1. Click and collect. Rather than deliver to your home, have it delivered to your nearest outlet and collect it. This is free. May or may not be appropriate depending on item size.

    2. You're familiar with the "Authority to leave" yeah? … From their website: http://www.officeworks.com.au/information/policies/delivery-…
If you select the 'Authority to leave' option while checking out, we will leave your order on your doorstep even if no one is around to receive it. Please note in this case Officeworks cannot be held responsible for lost or damaged deliveries after they have been dropped off.

I fail to understanding how authority to leave doesn't offer you far more latitude regarding delivery of the item?

EDIT: Another theory: maybe because the delivery guy is a private contractor. It's not in his interests to even ring the doorbell. I've had that happen before with delivery drivers contracted by Australia Post. They knock, wait 5 seconds and leave a slip. Other times I could swear they didn't even do that. Leave a slip, and move on. Aside from the inconvenience to you, they have no economic incentive to extend themselves beyond that.

    Also:

Bonus hustler tip I came up with a few years ago
Address the package c/o yourself, and provide the address of your local Australia Post. Importantly, it needs to be the street address, with no mention of it being a post office. I did that once just to irk the TNT people who were being really inflexible about delivery and it succeeded. Just go to Australia Post with your identification and you'll be fine. However, I cannot attest to whether or not this will succeed with Officetwerks. Bonus points if you convert your PO Box to an apartment number (have yet to do that one).

Ooh, I can't wait to finish writing my own Officetwerks complaint. They WILL be paying me for wasting my time, with all proceeds going to charity.
