Using CC to Buy Gift Cards?

I don't get it - why do people say to do this to get more points through Coles or Woolies?

Some AMEX rewards programs offer higher rewards for purchases made at supermarkets.

Buying a JB HIFI gift card with Amex at Coles or Wooolworths will get you more points than using AMEX at JB HIFI. It also prevents you from having to pay the surcharge that JB HIFI charge on AMEX. This also means that you can get gift cards for shops which don't even accept AMEX and get full points for the purchase.

This example can be used on lots of gift cards or stored value cards like Itunes or Google credit. The people who chase this sort of feature are usually converting the AMEX points to frequent flyer points and using them for free flights. They can get several cents value for each point they use for flying which is much better than the conversion rate for converting credit card points into redeeming gift cards.

    • Bril cheers!

  • Are you not sometimes charged at a cash advanced fee from the credit card provider?

  • Not sure about Coles WW points because you cannot get points when buying a Coles or WW branded gift cards. But you do earn points if you purchase grocery items paying using a Coles or WW branded gift card.

you obviously wouldn't get any Coles or WW points if you used your CC at Netflix, JB or EB.
But, you can get points if you buy a Netflix, JB or EB gift card for example at Coles or WW.

Although the reason I use CC to buy Gift Cards is not really points related.

I always pay my monthly budget for Coles Woolies Netflix PSN in advance by buying gift cards on my credit card.
It's helpful for not overspending and the money (cash) can be better used to earn interest while the CC is in an Interest free period and the capital(cash) can pay off the credit card before the interest free expires.

    • "Not sure about Coles WW points because you cannot get points when buying a Coles or WW branded gift cards"

Are you saying you don't get points ONLY when you buy coles/WW branded gift cards? Or all gift cards bought here?

      • I get points when I buy other gift cards like Google Netflix and PSN at Coles.

Since Woolworths changed their scheme to a useless item targeted points earning you don't get points per spend on anything including the Gift Cards of others you'll get the fuel voucher still for >$30 excluding WW branded,
but recently WW have a few buy $50 gift cards get $10 points back.

If i buy a $20 Coles card scanning my flybuys I will get 0 flybuys points

If i buy $20 food and pay with my $20 Coles giftcard I will get 20 flybuys points

        • Thats fine since i dont use flybuys!
