Intel Z170 Motherboard Choice/Recommendations

Hi All,

I recently purchased an Intel i7-6700K in the Kogan sale.

I still need to purchase a motherboard and ram. Ram I am happy to buy from MSY as prices seem consistent with other deals.

Motherboard prices seem to fluctuate more. Futu Online currently has the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming and Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 3 on sale for $222 delivered after 20% discount.

Can anyone comment on either of these boards? Or recommend an alternative to look at?

I will run 16gb DDR4 (unsure of speed yet, I will dig into clock speed vs. latency before I settle on what to buy).

The system will be used for general duties + video and photo editing, I am trying to future proof this thing for 4k editing in the future. I will be OC'ing the CPU (why not, it's a K after all) so I am looking for a mobo with suitable utilities.

I would really appreciate any advice/input!

Thanks.

  • Personal experience: Avoid the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD3 (not that you mentioned this model, but worth mentioning as this has left me with somewhat of a bad impression of Gigabyte after being a fan for 10+ years.) Check reviews on Newegg - this is something I wish I'd done before I bought mine!

The GA-Z170X-UD3 boards seem to all have intermittent DIMM issues which is difficult to prove when trying to RMA! Looks like QA at Gigabyte isn't what it once was.

  • id go with Asus ROG MAXIMUS VIII RANGER which is 295 at msy [40 more is well worth it if overclocking]

i have the ranger vii and its fantastic board
