Looked at pictures, Assumed Light saber, Clicked. Disappointed :(

    • +2

lol, from the icon I saw a vibrator before lightsabre

    • +4

Well if you want to attack someone by mildly and consistently warming them above their core temperature, it could work :P

      • +1

Yeah, but you need to sear the outside with a light sabre afterwards to get that proper grilled texture and taste.

      • In a bath tub?

Also should mention I managed to get mine for $204 delivered but this may or may not work now.

Yesterday I emailed Anova ( [email protected] ) before this price drop and mentioned the previous deal for $60 off ( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/246016 )

I got a reply back from support this morning from a very lovely woman who was able to give me a 48hr coupon code for $54 off
So I was very pleasantly surprised to see the price had dropped by $54 before I had even used the coupon.
Which ended up bringing my price further to get to the $204 total delivered to Melbourne.

Not a confirmed to work deal but thought there will be those who would like to give it a shot

    Goodluck!!!

    • +1

well done, I grabbed it when it was $60 off, we feel so fancy now.

    • I asked them, they gave me a $14 off coupon.

      • Same here… why don't they have cheaper shipping alternative?

  • I noticed Aldi are having a sous vide machine on sale next Wednesday for $119. Might be a good way to get into sous vide'ing.

I started with a Kogan machine before I got the Anova through a kickstarter. They both have their pros and cons, but I haven't used the Kogan since I got my Anova, but sometimes I miss the all-in-one design of the kogan one.

What I really like with the kogan is it came with a rack. I have yet to find a replacement rack (at a reasonable price). You really need a rack to either hold down your bags (sometimes they float) or to evenly distribute/stack multiple bags in the water bath.

    • have you tried making a cartouche from baking paper? Also a chef on one these Anova posts said he uses ping pong balls with great success.

      • pingpong balls?

        got a link?

I think what I'm imagining is completely wrong and irrelevant

        • +1

He just mentioned it in the comments, but I see what he means, a bunch of ping pong balls, enough to completely cover the surface, as they are lighter than everything else, should work to ensure your food does not end up half in, half out the water.

      • +2

i think you're confused. cartouche or ping pong balls is to create a lid/insulation layer to prevent heat and evaporation loss.

what obake is talking about is managing bags to ensure optimal water flow around the bags. eg. if you're doing a bunch of steaks, you want a rack that keeps them lined up with water flow between them.

        • It also stops them floating above the water, but I get what you mean.

        • @nikkirose:

yeah, but that would mean the bag is floating horizontally. this will impact water flow and temperature uniformity.

          see here:
          http://sousvide.wikia.com/wiki/Impact_Of_Bag_Position_On_Tem…

best to use a some sort of rack for keeping bags horizontal.

but yeah, ping pong balls / foil / cartouche is good for heat/evaporation loss, which also helps temperature uniformity! :)

  • I would have thought that the plastic ziplock bags would leak some kind of poison from sitting in boiling water for such a long time?

    • They are not recommended, but have been passed for short cooks. Vac-pack is the go.

      • Are vac-packs reusable?

        • yeah, can cut off an end and reseal.

        • @caprimulgus: after washing, they fair well on a warm (60C) dishwasher cycle. Also if you buy the rolls, you avoid waste by cutting them to size, I advise cutting with extra 3-4 cm, so you can reuse a couple of time.

    • +2

There doesn't seem to be any research to support the claim that Ziplock (and other food grade plastics) releases any dangerous poisons when used properly. SV is kept well below "boiling water" temp anyway.

    • +1

sitting in boiling water for such a long time

      its not boiling..
For beef, something like 54c is a rough temp you would be looking at

WHY?!!! I bought the Philips Air Fryer a few weeks ago, now this. I won't have any excuses in hosting a dinner party now. Will probably need to get the vacuum sealer from Aldi next Wednesday as well, but thanks OP. I got the Wifi one and asked for an extra $14 off coupon, so total of $244 delivered, only $10 extra than the bluetooth one, so might as well.

      very good, well played sir

Bought this while back at the last sale.. WARNING
There is a massive design flaw..
if you are using it.. cover with glad wrap over the pot, tub or whatever you use as a water bath container.
The evaporation and steam hitting the unit will cause it to go a bit haywire. especially considering it is winter now.. i was sous vide a brisket over night and the unit started beeping alot.. the moisture got into the LCD unit.
It beeps like crazy and keeps changing the degrees to fahrenheit.
The LCD also went out for a bit.

People recommend to dry it out if that happens. and cover it in future.

Other than that, the unit is pretty solid. highly recommend over the ALDI one unless you are only cooking small portions which the aldi one will do fine. But i find the Anova handy.. easy to pack away. where as those bigger units.. are alot of work unless oyu have heaps of space in the kitchen.

Also, recommend buying a vacuum sealer frmo aldi or Kmart. Unless you are cooking small things at low temps.
I know alot of people say use zip lock bags but people only mention ziplock being the most sturdy, whereas the other brands tend to break up or soften up alot.

Each to their own risk as Zip loc doesn't recommend it.
The rolls are about $15, machine is $60 from kmart.
The Rolls are good if you are going to sous vide a slab of meat or large items.

    • good info
      thank you

    • strange.. i have one of the original kickstarter ones of these and have never had such an issue

but good idea to cover the water anyway for long cooks due to evaporation

      • You will notice it during winter and when you are cooking for over 6 hours.

        • +1

I've done 48 hour ribs last winter without an issue.. But I did put foil over the pot for obvious evaporation issues..

  • Hi guys, I wonder if someone can help me understand this. Thanks in advance btw.

Is this item basically stir n heat up water in a covered container for a few hours? Except that it doesn't provide the container? If so, what kind container that it's best to use?

How much worse is aldi one to this?

About the vacuum sealer, isn't the aldi at disadvantage because they are on sale at random times, so if u run out of bags, u have to wait? Unless it can use any bags…

    Thanks people!

    • +2

Re vacuum sealer… You can use any bags.. You can get better quality bags on ebay for cheaper than aldi sell them..

As for the machine, the anova has the advantage of being more versatile in that you can use it in any size container.. Wether it's a large pot or an esky,so you aren't limited on the size of food you can cook (within reason). I usually use a 9l stock pot as it's convenient for normal sized meals but have also used a medium sized esky when I was cooking a large quantity once.
I would also take the anova as being a better product over all. They are one of the top home sous vide machines on the market.

      • Ic ic, thanks for that. It's a little too much for $250, I might look into the recipes first to decide.

        • The sales on ebay is way more than250. I wonder why…. This is sold listings, not advertised price

  • If anyone in Melbourne wants to buy one together I'm happy to get two and you can pick one up from me. It works to $197 each for the bluetooth model (I'm not really that interested in the wifi model but will upgrade if someone really wants it). Location for pickup can be near Broadmeadows or East Doncaster.

    • seems like the price has now dropped further and the two pack is no longer available

  • Price just dropped another $10
    Post to be amended

Is there any better unit out there with more reasonable price?
I got turned off by the ridiculous shipping cost

    • the aldi one is cheaper but it's not a better unit from the comments

      • Have yours arrived yet?
I'm wondering what's your thought about anova unit?

        • has not arrived yet
It's due this week will report back next week

        • @hockysa: Thanks

      • +2

the Aldi one looks very similar to the Sunbeam Duos Sous Vide and Slow Cooker. it's probably a rebrand.

i have both the Anova and Sunbeam, and the Anova is WAY better. it is much more accurate in termperature, and because it is an immersion circulator (the water is circulated around), the water temperature is much more consistent throughout the vessel.

the only benefit of the Sunbeam/Aldi is that it has it's own neat little vessel, but that is also a negative, because with the Anova (and other immersion circulators) you can use whatever vessel you like - you might want to use a smaller or large vessel, or oddly shaped one, depending on what you're cooking.

i would recommend the Anova over the Sunbeam/Aldi, no question.

the Aldi vaccuum sealer does the job tho! that's what I use.

        • what is this aldi vacuum sealer that everyone keeps talking about

        • @hockysa:

Aldi regularly sell a vacuum sealer / food saver. as the name suggests, it is a vacuum sealer (sucks all the air out of a bag and seals it). useful for sous vide cooking, but can also be used for storing food so it does not spoil as quickly.

used to be $70, but i think the most recent time they upped it to $80.

        • @caprimulgus: inflation lol

        • @hockysa: It's on sale now starting from Wednesday.
Someone in the above comments said that it can use any bags, I bought this one, but haven't got a chance to use it.

        • @fm: as in the aldi vacuum sealer is on special??

        • @hockysa: yeah, it's $79, it usually go cheaper if it doesnt sold out after a week.

        • @fm:

Yeah, I have seen the sealer for $49 at my local aldi store before, if you're happy to take the risk of waiting for them to be reduced.

  • I found this anova deal separately when researching sous vide options but is def a good deal. I bought the Aldi sous vide last week, but will return it because the temperatures are too far out, about 8 degrees hotter than the temp says; according to whirlpool the average temp is usually 2 degrees out. When I return to Mr Aldi it may or may not go back with those handy sous vide racks… Happy with the Aldi vaccum sealer though.

I'm excited to use this model as you can sit it on any pot on the stove so it isn't another big piece of kitchen kit, and doesn't take up valuable storage space like the Aldi one.

I took advice from above and obtained a discount code from their helpdesk for bluetooth + wifi, 48 hour expiry so expires 10 July 2016 (USA Pacific time I presume).

    Code is: LB-AUWIFI-8t258s4e

Total delivered price for bluetooth + wifi AUD $234.
