AmEx Credits - Can You Abuse The System?

I used my Amex to buy a David Jones bed set, and got a $20 credit. David Jones had to cancel the order, but I still got the $20, so I ended up $20 better. (but still minus a bed set).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone does this intentionally? With Bing Lee and others offering a $50 credit after spending $300+, what's to stop you doing that and returning items? the hassle may be worth it for $50.

Any thoughts?

    i think for $20 or $50 you need to spend time to buy go pick up and return. The time and traveling cost may worth more.

    doesn't work, you will see later that they will refund against that transaction and your credit will disappear.

    David Jones had to cancel part of my order too, but instead of jeopardising my AmEx credit, I asked for a store credit / gift card instead.
