Stolen iPhone 6S PLUS 64GB GOLD reported to police

Hi guys, just had a guy stole our phone from gumtree, luckily no one got hurt but it did hurt the pocket. I want to report a stolen apple iphone gold 6s PLUS Imei number 355737072456781 with SERIAL NUMBER: C39RJFMBGRX2
PART NUMBER: MKU82MY/A

This phone has been reported to the police and was brand new when stolen by a 160cm height male middle eastern background with a white Mazda 2 hatch with P plate car (seriously they would go this far).
Do yourself a favour and don't buy this phone, hopefully as this popular forum would help out other people who come across stolen and not supported such criminal activity.

It is a $1050 phone, don't buy it. please. I am also putting a $400 reward if you find this phone (in new condition or at least good condition).

feel free to report any stolen phones imei. You can PM me if the above IMEI 355737072456781 iphone gold 6s plus was found stolen.

Thanks ozbargain community!

EDIT: CONFIRMED WHITE MAZDA 3 WITH P PLATE WAS SPOTTED BY THE NEIGHBOURS

EDIT: This phone was sold brand new & sealed from a retailer, no sim, no icloud, no registration on this phone making it the freshest meat to steal. Learn from my mistake. It has been reported to Police, and apple pended a block, the retailer who we purchased from is also aware to make sure it gets blocked, within and out of Australia. Let's all slow down and make it hard for criminals to BE criminals by being aware and helping each other here.

    wait… stolen from gumtree means you try to sell and the guy pretend to buy, take the phone to check but run away with it?
    doh…. crazy

    • Yes I know very naive being the first time and really shocked. very unfortunate people need to stoop so so low and take away what is not theirs. When they do get caught, is it worth it? I am waiting one these days they will meet someone like you who would be much more prepared to teach them a lesson.

          I am, but gumtree got to me first. besides ebay = 13% fee on $1100 item = lotsa $$ but yes safer. but ebay = customer complaint and get money and phone gone.. same thing??

          Meeting at a public place yes, but no outdoor, not even police station, anyone can escape with easy access.

        • -8

          @Dnkei: lol take a friend next time

        • +10

          @Slippery Fish: its not easy and everyday you are prepared for thief to come by. it has been an expensive lesson.

          friend that can run as fast as usain bolt?

        • So the buyer wanted to have a look at the phone, then he just ran off by foot or was he in the car?

          I guess next time, you could ask for money to be exchanged first. Or meet in a closed public place, like inside a shopping mall, so it harder to run straight into the car.

          Keep checking on Gumtree and ebay, he's probably looking to get rid of it and sell it for cash asap. Once you find his listing, pretend to be an interested buyer and meet him.

        • +2

          @Dnkei:

          Friend that can throw a good, heavy punch. Or one that plays footy and can do a sprinting tackle..

          In either case, whenever I sell an item outdoors, I make sure that the buyer is not sitting in a car with his mate, with the car engine running. That's them getting ready to speed off once they've grabbed your item.

          Another common tactic is also the buyer refusing to come out of the vehicle or get off a bike, he sits inside and prepares to drive off once they snatch the stuff out of your hands.

          @Ughhh:
          Meet in a police station

        • +1

          @Ughhh: He ran off by foot down 2 corners where a car was waiting for him in a white suzuki? swift and shouted at him along the way… btw this just happened 2.41 hours ago. Then drove off speeding. I was raging running at him and didn't second thought of the danger and wanted to get it back.

          I don't know if anyone would hand over money before inspecting, but there won't be a next time. Yes I should've arranged to meet in a bar with cameras.

          @scrimshaw: yes don't we all need that one muscle man friend who ideally is your neighbour ready for your call 24/7 :D

        • +2

          @Dnkei: You couldn't see the licence plates?

        • @MrTweek:

          Car was unreachable, I think the dash was around 100m away outside 3 streets I had my phone ready but couldn't get close enough while I was yelling at them they sped off veering off road a bit. It was also dark and only picked up the white car. Guy was probably 18-22 yo, 160cm wears a cap, thin, middle eastern

        • +8

          If he got scammed by a paypal claim back etc on ebay, others would probably tell him he should have sold on gumtree instead.

        • +2

          @Dnkei: Install Prey app so that you can take the pictures when the phone is stolen.

        • +3

          @Dnkei:

          Check along escape route for CCTV or dashcam of reg plate?

        • -1

          @Dnkei: The only people that wear caps these days are criminals who are about to do something dodgy like a robbery or bashing. If you are meeting someone random to sell them an item, alarm bells should be ringing in your head if they are wearing a baseball cap or a hoodie.

          Be prepared, ask to see their ID first. Monitor their behaviour for signs of nervousness. If it doesnt feel right then back out of there.

        • @fruit: Sounds reassuring but probably not practical as you can imagine, the sargent on duty will probably shoo you away for being a nuisance.

          A Macdonalds is best, they have high res cameras everywhere these days, just sit in your car and wait for the purchaser to enter and tell them your running late while you canvas the situation (take photos of cars etc).

          If anything goes wrong you have details to report to police and Maccas has video if cops request it.

          Usain bolt? I thought you said theif was middle eastern.

        • +1

          @suicine94: whats running fast gotta do with middle eastern?

        • @PleasureMe:
          Wow , I'll remember that next time I put my hat and hoody on. And think we might be able to get Pauline Hanson to get them banned…..not ;)

      • That's very unfortunate mate.

        I've personally sold quite a few iphones over gumtree with no issues. But I usually take a deposit to know if they are genuine buyers.

        Ive checked your serial number on Apple - so far it hasn't been activated.

        With the blocking on though - should some attempt to activate the phone - aren't they just going to end up with a brick?
        I.e. will that help you get the phone back? (hopefully)

        • let's see how far they can go. Police has statements and hopefully working on it, if not then we can only do what we can to make it harder for them at the least.

          my Mazda3 must also be an evo… brand starts with M, has 4 cylinders and has 4 wheels :)

        • @nightshaide:

          Does it have brake lights?

          Then it must be an Evo!

    Assuming you have a legit Apple receipt, can you contact Apple to block the phone?

    Or did you buy the phone with credit card…perhaps there's some sort of insurance?

    • +6

      I have receipt, will give apple a call to see what they say. thanks

      • telstra/optus/voda can't block it too? (maybe not because it wasn't through them but worth a try)

          NO!

          Block it through Apple.

    maybe next time meet at a public place like a restaurant or a cafe where there are cameras for safety and security! Hope you get it back.

    • -8

      So many successful trades on gumtree has been made which let my guard down, There won't be a next time and I doubt I'll be getting it back.

      As mentioned, lesson learnt

      For others out there wanting do phone trade on gumtree or the like who don't want to get phone stolen or buy a stolen phone:

      1. Always meet INSIDE a public space with doors and cameras, get their names.
      2. Check for imei on the internet to see if its stolen… like this one 355737072456781
      3. Protect yourself and carry a knife in case of danger <—- really I feel this is going to help
      • +85

        4 … Don't follow through with 3.

        • +1

          Couldn't agree more with this comment. Don't be that person. If you follow through with steps 2 then 1 (the correct order) you are minimising risk. Taking a concealed weapon however safe you may feel carrying it, only increases risk. If someone was going to run away with your item, trying to pull out a knife in a public area certainly isn't going to help matters. If they threaten you in any way, your best move is to give them what they want and report it to the police after the immediate danger has passed.

        • +8

          @Diji1: Right, so that you can kill/severely injure someone for stealing a phone? Perhaps you should move to America.

        • +4

          @boredofficeworker:
          boredofficeworker: Yes, agree 100%.
          Dnkei and Diji1: Would you really shoot / stab / kill someone to get a phone back ? Are you serious ?????

          If you take a weapon along and there is an altercation and the other party gets hurt - then at the very least you up for premeditated assault, carrying and using a concealed weapon, etc.

          But, if you kill the guy, then that is premeditated murder plain and simple - you took along the weapon, you were prepared to kill him - you brought along the weapon after all.

          No insanity plea. No "I lost my head" / "had a brain snap" or other lame excuses will work - it is premeditated murder. Open and shut case.

          Do YOU really want to kill someone - and spend the rest of your life in jail - for a phone ??? Are you that stupid ???

      • +14

        … and then get arrested for carrying weapons.

        https://www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/find-legal-answers/criminal-…

        I do agree with the first point though.

        • +19

          @Dnkei:
          I don't think it's illegal to be arrested.

        • @jerjergege: Lol
          That makes cops the biggest criminals (not saying some aren't though)

        • @jerjergege: Stealing can also get you arrested, if the above sentence didn't get interpreted properly

        • +2

          @Dnkei:

          And if you caught the offender, assaulted him
          Then you would be arrested too.. crazy laws

        • @Peannut: how to prove self defense? … indeed crazy laws and a crazy world we live in. look at them war in the news every single day.

        • @Dnkei: you don't prove self defense. You raise it under the circumstances and the prosecution must disprove it. Self defense in NSW, for example, is only a partial defense to a murder charge resulting in a downgrade to manslaughter. Extreme case but some may find this interesting.

        • -1

          if you are going to carry an illegal knife with intent why not just get an illegal gun?
          (profanity) moron.

        • @antikythera: This is how chemical and biological warfare comes about…

        • @Dnkei:
          If you take along a weapon to confront someone, expecting trouble, then that is not self defence, because you went to a place where you expected to find trouble.
          Self Defence is when you are attacked and you defend yourself - not when you go somewhere expecting trouble, not when you go out of your way to put yourself in danger and/or create the trouble or the escalation of the trouble.

        • -2

          @Moose-au: by the time they attacked you, you're probably senseless broken down on the ground bleeding. By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

      • +4

        Setting the legalities of carrying a knife aside… only carry a knife if you can use it AND defend against one.. otherwise you will more than likely have it used on you.

        Good luck with getting some resolution though!

        I have 2 phones s7 edge and note 5 listed on eBay and mentioned if you want to pick the phone
        Your PayPal name should match with your drivers licence
        If cash I need to have a copy of your photo Id cash and then I will hand the phone
        Buy it if you like else there are plenty people buying it
        I did recivee messages I get want to have look, straight ignore them

      • Someone is always going to have a bigger knife… Or if they don't, they will take yours

        • It's plagiarism if you don't reference Crocodile Dundee here: That's not a knife…

      • +2

        Seriously? Personally I would rather lose a $1K phone than risk getting stabbed in a knife fight!

    • I'm really surprised this sort of theft would happen anywhere in Australia (except maybe Byron)

    • +38

      Laugh and joke about my mistake, I really don't care, I'm pointing this thread out for my and other people's sake that this is real and can happen to you, your mum, your family, your friend or anyone.

      Also picked up this but a bit outdated article
      http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/south-east/iphone-6-owner…

      Like seriously I hear news and see people get robbed, with worse cases like getting hurt in the process, runned down by a car or a bike snatch, I never thought itd happen to me… even though I'm unlucky to meet such aholes, I am happy no one got hurt. If they wanted money, go and work like every else. It's not hard to make your own rewarding cash by doing something good. really its not, and its not a shortcut by being a criminal.
      Getting away with it or not, karma will come for them 10 fold.

      • +3

        So help us understand some things.

        Why were you selling a brand new phone, that's never been activated?

        Where did you get it from?

        What price did you agree to sell it for?

        • +8

          @Dnkei:

          Just in case it helps in the future, it might be a good idea to know that any product bought from Apple is covered by a 14-day return policy, and it doesn't matter if the iphone package has been unsealed. (all boxes, manuals, accessories and documentation however must also be returned)

          @RockyRaccoon:

          I am helping myself and others and enlightening them that this situation occurs and quite often after some more research.
          Anyone can be subject to being a theft asking all this info, are you one of them?

        • +5

          @Dnkei:
          He asked a very valid question: Why on earth would you want to sell a brand new phone that you just purchased? Smells very fishy to me, and I think you might be leaving out a huge part of the story.

        • @Dnkei: Geeee, you arte posting on OZBargain, questions from RockyRacoon seem normal to me. In fact I was about to ask you the same question. Go on and answer them. You should know the rules and the people by now.

      • -5

        If they wanted money, go and work like every else. It's not hard to make your own rewarding cash by doing something good.

        Gotta disagree with this comment, it's hard to find work now even casual jobs at least in Victoria.

        • +2

          So steal iPhones instead?

      • +1

        Its not really a mistake, just pure scum move by thief but next time try to take the cash before handing over goods. But I understand its hard if someone wants to inspect it. Perhaps Gumtree can track this (profanity) down?

        • +4

          Careful buster, you'll have the Sanctimony Squad in here shortly reading you the riot act about how thieving scumbags are people too! :P

        • +1

          @sirlothie:

          Its not really a mistake

          OP has repeatedly expressed regret for their mistake. It was a series of mistakes actually.

          I wouldn't make a $1000 ATM withdrawal and be indiscreet, would you? That would be risky. If you insist on testing the moral character of strangers, you must also accept the outcome.

          Gumtree members are not your friends and you have no reason to trust them. In this case, one was better prepared than the other. One had a plan. The other, a naive hope in the decency of humanity.
          In this world?

          Mistakes:
          1. Failing to plan
          2. Trusting a stranger

      • I used to say that alot….go get a job like every one else why steal, rob when you know that you will get caught sooner or later… (unless you are the kingpin)

        Well its a simple equation really, there is only that many jobs out there and there are the populations including skill,unskilled,imigrants, refugees, illegal immigrants, ex criminals, drug addicts minus the ones that actually have jobs = the ones that are floating around.

        Its a selection of the survival of the fittest process, the norm ones with get jobs with ease however there are those ones why they might not get a normal job in the livelihood in Australia so they usually tend to look for vice jobs.

        How I usually spot these people are the ones driving around in plain cloths in the mid mornings and afternoons in residential areas or very late at night or early mornings when you can hear them driving slowly pass the houses.

        So what can each people do? nothing really as people are known to pay for cheap goods even though they will ignore that it is stolen.

        Here is what I think might work:-
        1)If a phone is stolen all Telcos in Australia would barred the imei of the phone to be worked with as this could literally make the phone worthless and sort of useless as you can still play pokemon go with it.

        2)All pawnshop, cash converters, would have a list of stolen phone imei details and checking with the seller's goods at all time and if its stolen report to the police and retrieve the stolen goods.

        3)All residential streets have police surveillance, if google can implement a 360 street finder ….imagine what it can do for you in real time. You can post on a alert-tube channel if there is one.

        In my previous homeland Malaysia, there are heaps of crimes from conman, snatch thief, robber, murder, rapist, child rapist

        ( I have witness when I was on my bicycle and watched a helpless old lady scream for help when her handbag was snatched (standing on my bicycle scared stiff), also a victim myself when I was talking to my lady boss on my new sony ericsson p910 and suddenly on behind being snatched away by 2 motorcyclist. I did chase them as I was next to my car and drive like a madman chasing my nearly one month salary gadget and when i finally caught to them I just stopped and break my car which I could just ram them down (male friends told me I should) but thinking back I didn't cause I couldn't and I was glad I didn't take a life)

        Here is another one as you know usually people like to leave their phones on the table, I was told a story that a random guy came to their table in a mamak store a.k.a Malaysia cheap version of cafe and told them "you shouldn't be leaving your hand phone on the table" before he snatched it and ran off with the phone which all of them looked at each other and stoned for a while before realizing that they have been rob.)

        On the other hand some has won the snatch thief battles, which my sister didn't let go of her handbag and scream so hard that the motorcyclist eventually let go and ride away but that had leave in a traumatic situation a while, others (read in the papers)….not so good as they didn't let go of their handbag and was dragged 100 of meters on the road leaving permanents scars and life threatening conditions.

        I love to say some of these are victories but in reality they are dumb actions as these are only materials stuffs and can be bought again unless you are a systema instructor or a UFC fighter which they have picked a wrong fight with (give them a wakeup bash on behalf of the people). But there are some situation as it has evolved to a new level in some countries which they will still hurt you even though they have got what they want as to erase evidence, no morale sense, or to make sure you don't talk (something like bruce wayne/batman storyline)

        My solution to that:-
        Microchipped, tagged, gp assed them, and have a live criminal tracker feed with alerts which will be provided to all people living in Australia.

        Christians will say oh no thats the satan way, humanitarian will say no that is not humane, government would say how much would that cost…., politician will say sure thing just need to vote for me, army would say hell yeah track them and blow them up with remote robots, victims will say ….why not.

        and lastly fyi….its not worth it to trade you kidney for an apple product…….

        • Thanks for your post, one long windy one at the least but good examples none the less, even though we live in a country with higher living standard is what gave away the hope of a better community but unfortunately, and very unfortunate that this is not the case because everywhere will have these type of people as you said based on their situation.

          It is true that it is just material and objects even though expensive, is it worth the risk of lives? But in most cases the Odds are against you and just have to be smart about it when the heavy gets going.

          Once again as citizens and raising awareness we need to make it hard for the law-breakers, the criminals, the thieves.

          Also some people don't understand what is right and what is wrong? Well imagine yourself or your family being hurt, have something stolen from you like your phone or wallet or camera or tv or laptop/pc or worse your lover's belongings, if you feel that you like that, then that may be right to you, but that's pretty stupid because I wouldn't like to get hurt or get anything stolen so I won't do this to others, that is how you should firstly think, then after that take action, talk it out, there is no shame in being human but there is shame for continuing hurting others emotionally or physically. (unless you're sadistic which I can think of many places for you to get pwned rather than the public that doesn't want to).

    • +8

      Its not funny at all, very sad, feel for the OP. Lets see you laughing if this happens to you. Yes you are the only who laughed :(

    Unrelated: but awhile back i had my camera stolen. I was with my family visiting the museum. We were outside eating lunch and I decided to take some family photos. Then a guy came up and offered to take the photo for us…..(he looked innocent enough) but once he got the camera he just took off… unbelievable……my 8 years old son was upset… I told him that guy needed the camera more than us, let him have it…..lol (It was a fairly new Canon Rx100 II that cost me around $500 at the time.)
