  • I've been on the fence with these headphones for years, are they still worth buying or are there newer and better models around?

    • +2

These are the ATH M50x which was introduced in 2014 and has some advantages over the original M50 like a detachable cord (usually the first thing to break with a pair of decent headphones!)

Still a solid choice for the price range, no doubt.

      • iv had them since 2014 and i still use them to this day. they are fantastic

they sound even better when you hook them up to an amp…

    • Depends what you're after in headphones. These are still some of the best sub-$200 phones you can get but it depends if you want detailed sound or over powered bass. The detail in these is excellent but they're not very bassy compared to many of the other phones in the price range (they're monitors after all)

      • +1

I listen to a bit of everything, unless you're absolutely determined to have as much bass as possible, I'm not finding them really lacking.

Very comfy and warm on the head :D

        • +2

If they get a little too warm the Brainwavz HM5 fit the M50 series, they do velour and hybrid pads which are apparently a bit cooler to wear (hybrids don't affect the sound as much as the velours)

        • +1

          @dav3:

I've got the brainwavz hm5. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

        • @sillywalks:

also have the brainwavz HM5s, there was also a discounted jaycar set for $80-$99 a few years ago when the HM5's were cheaper (USD exchange rate woes) that were HM5 clones.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/91508

the ATH-M50s has been around since that period as well.

HM5's and HM9's are around as well, very different sound/audience though. and about the same price.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJjcQ_mER_E z review of the HM9
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UrKy1EuO0k z review of the M50x in comparison.

z (he) also does a HM5 review as well, which is good too.

if you can get them, beyerdynamics are nicer and more comfortable, SM150s, Shure / ultrasone are better, MA900's are on the wishlist, etc.

And then there's the sheer number of guides…

          I got mine from here…

Free shipping. Person I spoke to was helpful.

      • +1

They're not pure monitors as they have a slight V-shaped sound signature (eg. the bass and treble is boosted a little over the mids). I've had these for a little while now and certainly don't have any issues with a lack of bass, they're great value headphones.

      • +2

I find that flatter headphones are better for a wider range of music. Bassier headphones tend to muddy tracks that need detail like death metal, etc.

    • +2

Value for money wise the m50X is still a great choice compared to the newer flagship models and other brands.

Here are a few reviews on m50X compared to their new flagship m70X:

I sold my m50's (not the newer x model) and kept my Sony MDR-7506A because I thought they were more balanced, and had better bass. $150 as well.

    • +1

I bought a set last time this deal came around, and the only real issue I have with them is that, as my go-to set of headphones, they're pretty bulky to carry with me.

Combine with AMEX offer in store - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/258819 and get $30 back (with two cards) for a total of $119.

  • +2

membership costs $25, so practically it costs $174.

  • +1

I'm keen to get one, but the membership fee effectively kills the deal

  • +8

As u/lovbargain has pointed out, theres a $25 signup cost to be a member.

If you did it for your existing members, you would have advertised just to your members instead of going to ozbargain for it.

Happy to remove neg after price has been updated to reflect the cost to the average Ozbargainer, but your price right now is misleading.

    • +4

      Fair enough Cubist.
I didn't see it your way given it was in both title and copy that it was for members only.

From the up-votes on your comment , its clear i'm in the wrong.

I have updated the copy and title to include the total price if buying a membership.

@All. Let me know if i'm still writing shady gibberish. Want it to be clear for all.

      • +1

I've removed my Neg. $174 for someone not already a member is still a good price.

  • Must mention the $25 signup cost in the title.

    • Updated.

  • I am currently using the Skull Candy Aviator everyday, is it worth an upgrade to these given I already had the membership a while ago?

    thanks.

    • They are a great deal for $149. If you've already paid the $25 fee to get them at this price and you are interested in an audio upgrade, then this is a great move.

      • -2

if you stopped to read johnnyle states "I already had the membership" so he (or she) will be paying $149 for the M50x.

        • +1

I did read his comment. My comment was replying to him, but also a general statement to anyone else reading it.

There's no need to be a twat when communicating with strangers online.

    • On one hand having choices is great, on the other, if you like your Skull Candy's then why upgrade? I have original M50's they are still probably my favourite among my headphones (compared to HD-25-II, ATH-ANC9, HD-419). I have never owned the Aviators but I do like the look of them.

      • coz I had it for a few years already, and its a gift from my friend so I will keep it anyway. Just wondering if these would be better in term of the sound quality?

        • I can't really comment from experience, I've never owned the aviator's but by reputation the M50x should be an upgrade. They are not a as portable though

  • +3

For those who don't want to get the membership but are wishing to pay 95 cents more, they can head over to StoreDJ who are selling the same headphones for $184.95 plus $10 off at checkout wit code 10XY75, this code would work with all items over $75 thus reducing the M50x price to $174.95. The link to their site is https://www.storedj.com.au/Products/AUD-ATHM50XBK for the black version, works with other colours too :)

    • StoreDJ recently upped their prices… You could get them for $160 on special…now $175…

  • Not really into paying money to save money. But they are sweet headphones…

  • That's very good price even for two years ago when the AUD was stronger

  • You should probably also mention that it is a lifetime membership with the one time payment of $25 so if any other deals come up for members they would get discounts on that as well.
