$15 should be good for three movies.

7.5 movies at ours, or 15 movies on Tuesdays.

Shame they only allow 3 hires per credit card… :(

    • 4 hires at my local.

    • Shame they only allow 3 hires per credit card

You only have one credit card? Hand in your OzBargain membership!

      • I deal in cash most of the time…

  • Well it looks like VideoEzy Kiosks are on the verge of collapsing, their deals are getting more and more generous, which means they're more desperate to get people to go there.

    • Their business model really seems to be to suck people in and then hope they forget to return the disk so they can hit you with fees. I was really lucky last weekend to not get caught out I turned up to return the disk only to find the shopping centre door locked, I could see the machine but not access it luckily there waa a lady packing up inside who took pity and opened up for me.

      • +2

You seem to be inferring that you were sucked in to arriving at the shopping centre late by Video Ezy.

        • +1

no I did not mean that at all, I just that I think they make more money from late fees than they do on rentals. The centre is open after 5 every day of the week bar 2, while it prompts you that the disc is due back by 9 it is easy to forget that the machine may be inaccessible at that time.

        • @melmac77: Yeah nah, you were just late. Don't blame it in them.

      • +1

that happened to me a while back and I rang videoEzy customer care and told them the issue, and they were nice enough to extend by 1 day. awesome.!!

    • There was a story on movie kiosks on The Business last week. Video Ezys CEO said they are rolling out hundreds more kiosks in the coming year. Good new for Ozbargainers, but they must be deluded.

One of my local supermarkets now has 2 kiosks side by side. Works for me, more movies to choose from on code deals.

      • One has 3 now. TBH there are lots of people of the more transient disposition who love these things, no need for a solid internet connection, no need for chewing their limited mobile data.

I rent 15 dvds last week already for free. I no I do not know what to rent from them this week anymore!

  • +1

How do they make any money? seriously? Our local machine rarely has one or two discs out for hire. I bet it's mostly people using codes.

It used to be you could rent one and get one free, then 1 free hire, then 2 for free, now 3 for free…. perhaps their strategy is that the more they can get people to hire in one go, the greater the chance that they won't get through the movies and end up returning them late. Maybe the only money they make is from late fees?

Sorry noob question as I have never used this service before.
Do I need to register or apply the codes on the video ezy website or do I just go to the kiosk directly, follow the prompts and enter the code for free rentals?

    • +1

Just go to the kiosk and enter the code in the "voucher" box. It will require your credit card too. No need to register.

      • Thanks mate. I will get some rentals tonight :)

        • You need an email address and a credit card to swipe through the reader. Once you enter the promo code make sure the total comes down to $0.00. Once you swipe your credit card (that's basically how the machine identifies you) it tries to charge you $0.00 which would go through even if you have a zero balance. Easy peasy.

        • @sparkles: Borrowed, watched and returned. I definitely got my 3 movies worth of free entertainment :)
          Will use again.

    • +1

No website involved. Enter the code at the kiosk machine checkout.

    • Also would like to know this, and do they have bluray's or just DVDs?

      • +1

        They have blurays.

        • They have a very few blurays. Basically if it's the main movie released that week, they might add it to the single screen of available blurays.

        • @sane: About 30% of the new releases come on both Blu Ray and DVD. All the major ones anyway. Popular movies have more than one copy in the machine. The less commercial releases are more likely to be DVD only.

        • @sparkles: They mostly have blue rays in busy spots or malls. Like disney movies or marvel movies are expensive. So most have DVDs and few have blue rays. Like my local one didn't have jungle book inki ray. But other one had.

  • The business model for Video Ezy has always been to make money from late fees even before they transitioned to kiosks. It's a dying market because normal people don't want to rent physical media anymore when it's so easy to stream.

    • With the fragmentation in the market between Netflix, Stan and Presto each having exclusives, theres still a place potentially for people to hire the odd show.

My main complaint is a lack of 3d blurays

      • Google play movies, AmazonPlay, Microsoft Entertainment, PlayStation Movies, iTunes and Foxtel On Demand fill that void nicely. What shows can't you at least rent to stream?

    What the hell, Australia? Seriously???

  • +1

I guess I have a lot of movie watching to do. I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge. I have about 7 debit/reloadable credit cards, which can each be used at 2 different types of machine near here. I had stopped going because I was sick of free movies, but I think I'm ready to get back into it. Hopefully they have some new stuff now.

    • +5

Ozbargain…when acquiring freebies becomes a chore.

    • It's a jingle out there.

  • +2

Safe to say my dvd rental days are over, even if free. I couldn't be bothered, prefer to stream but kudos to peeps who still use and get great deals.

    • It's great for me because I don't have broadband internet at home for streaming etc.

  • -2

    people still watch DVD's in 2016 ?

    • +2

Yep, those with slow internet, and those on a tiny quota (e.g. mobile data is their only internet).

For many people, the peak-period slowdown from 6pm-10pm also limits streaming.

      • Oh opps. Forgot what it's like. Been on cable for so long..

        • +1

City people don't realise that people in the sticks are still on ADSL, not even ADSL2, let alone cable.

          Buffering…….

Streaming high definition just isn't an option. Sometimes YouTube can be problematic LOL.

        • @sparkles: Im definitely in the sticks..

        • @darkage: You are lucky then. I'm still on ADSL.

        • @sparkles: Yep definitely lucky since some friends cant even use the internet on ADSL in the same subrub as me. but still I miss the days of 28k8 baud and ANSI GFX B-)

        • @darkage: Someone on my street recently moved in, tried to connect to broadband, told there was no room for them on the exchange. They have to use mobile internet for their home connection.

    • When I get into a TV series, I really enjoy watching some of the extras that DVDs have. Not sure there is any way to access these through streaming services.

  • Not confirmed but I think the kiosk at Burwood East, 3151 is $1.00 per movie

I think there's still a bit of life in these machines yet! We've got x2 in Coogee and they appear to be very popular.
Being tighter than an Italian tenor's trousers I just tend to use the promo codes or if i'm feeling a bit flush and really want to see something, I might squander a dollar on a Tuesday.

    • +1

well there is my chortle for the day

  • Movies were $4 today (Tuesday) at my local one of these. So got 3 to make the most of the deal.

    • Same price for me. It appears the kiosk owner can charge anywhere from between $1-$4 per movie.

  • $2 hire today at mine but no time. Will get this one on Friday. Cant believe it's a $15 coupon ? ? ? ?

  • Can anyone tell me how this works? I rented 4 movies this morning and haven't received a receipt. Are you supposed to receive one? Are the DVDs supposed to be returned within 24 hours?

    • Return the following day before shop doors close. So guessing in your case, you'll have maybe 30 hours to watch hired DVDs.

You should get a receipt. Check spam.

    • Return before 9pm the following day.

      • Or check when your location closes. Mine closes at 8pm.

You should receive a receipt via email, even if the total is $0.

        • Thanks. Still didn't receive a receipt. The kiosk I rented from malfunctioned a few times before I was able to use it. Maybe that's why I didn't get one.

  • Hired Money Monster and Hateful 8 last night. The code works.

I recommend Money Monster..Hateful 8 not so much, I got bored.

Hey does anyone know if you can return the DVDs back to any Video Ezy kiosk or does it have to be the original one?

    • Since we are doing recommendations on this weeks watches:

Captain America Civil War 2/10 meh pretty average
The Jungle Book 8/10 cool animation surprising better than expected

    • Batman vs Superman was meh 4/10
      13hrs was disappointing I expected better 5/10
Bastille Day was run of the mill but better than I expected 6/10.

      • Bastille Day was very good I thought. I enjoyed the cinematography throughout the film and both actors worked well together. Did you notice the French actors looked like an older version of Leo Dicaprio and Robert Downey Jnr? Haha

We should start a new website OzTomatoes - OzBargainers five to ten word reviews based on whether movies are worth your time, let alone your money.

        • Hahahahaha!!!

      • Forsaken - beautiful father & son western movie about vengeance 8/10
Batman v Superman :DOJ - disjointed, confusing at times, ben affleck 6/10

        • ben affleck, nuf said LOL

    • +1

You can return to any kiosk but there are two types of machines, and the disc case of one won't fit into the other. (Source: Video Ezy Customer Service)

Call the hotline and they can check for you.

  • Any other movie rental recommendations for tonight?

Last night I saw what was new… Dads Army, Captain America, Money Monster, Hateful 8…

  • I got four movies on Tuesday and then returned. Next day I could not use the balance of the $15 coupon FYI

    • The code is one use per card. If you have another credit/debit card you can use the same code

  • Disaster! Went to my local today and the machine wasn't there. Thought it had been removed, but contacted support who said the machine should still be there and weren't sure what had happened. They are going to give me a call when they find out …
