        • On live chat now. I'm sure they'll sort it out.

        • @ozmu: Can you post here and let me know what the go is once you're done? Please and thank you :)

    • +1

930 was a quality build. I still have my n8, n90 (yup still goes it has 3g) my Lumia 520, 930, 1020 and my 950xl.

      • +2

I've sold all my spare old Nokias. The 1020 was my favourite! As for my 930 though, it's been for warranty repair three times (microphones, screen tint, noise vibration motor). It's actually been the most problematic phone I've ever owned. But it is very nice.

        • +1

Still use my 1020 as my work daily. Fukn real good camera.

        • @Damonator84: I persuaded the missus to get a 1020 a while back at a Hardly Normal firesale. She loves it and the 40+ megapixel shots (shrunk to 38 Megapixel for some reason)are awesome. We do plant shots for for international garden mobs and some of those shots are as good as the ones done on "the real" dedicated cameras we have, ie Canon SLR etc.

        • @Palamedes: 38MP for 4:3 and 34 for 16:9 shots, still the biggest sensor in any phone, except for the Nokia 808

  • Pretty lame on MS sales part. They have ran out of ScreenBeam dongle. A result of that, you can't add any 950s to the cart. They said it will take them 2 days to restock the Screenbeam 2.

This is the response I got on live chat:

    Richard St: at 10:01:05

Okay. Usually when this error occurs on the site it happens because we've temporarily ran out of the accessory that's included with the order. Looking now, the ScreenBeam Mini2 is Out of Stock. I'm going to report this to site management and I recommend checking back within the next few days.

    Richard St: at 10:02:50

This sale will last all the way until September 30th as long as we do not run out of phones but we should have that accessory back in stock within the next few days.

    • That's a pretty lacklustre checkout process. They need only make customers aware that they are on backorder and that they will be shipped separately.

    • Wow, ok. Thanks for checking.

  • Realistically is the XL worth the extra $100? everyone keeps saying the performance is the same despite the better processor in the XL. Would it really affect Continuum?

    • My 950 was nicked, and I bought an XL. The difference isn't huge, but it's noticeable in day to day use, and seems to help with Continuum,

    • If you fancy a large screen and a bit faster continuum, yes. Lumia 950Xl is a better choice.

    • +1

Yeah, the phone doesn't get as hot due to the "liquid cooling" which means better battery life over 950 (Even though the screen is bigger)
And also, slightly better performance in general, but its not all too noticeable. I cant comment on graphics for games though. Continuum should be slightly faster, less hiccups but still works well with 950.

Tldr: Get the XL for better battery life, overall a better phone in every aspect, but get the 950 instead if you're stint, still a good phone.

  • +1

For those that purchase a 950 or 950XL make sure to check the pre-loaded Lumia Offers app as you should still be able to get a code for 6 months of Office 365 Personal. The phone itself has office included, so it doesn't matter if you use this for another device.

  • So much want the 950XL, but shame that it's single sim only, dual sim would have me sold.

  • Save your $400, Windows Mobile will die out in the following years. Microsoft has no trusted phone manufacturer to use after Nokia, "Lumia" will be history too.

    • If Lumia is to be rebranded, new MS phone(s) are coming out next year. Plus, MS updating the W10 phones all the time AND coorporating with 3rd parties to make phones (HP elite x3).

      • Check the apps for the Lumia phones, it's just getting worse year after year.

        • +5

My main phone is the Lumia 950. The Windows store has what you need but not the plethora of Android. But My Lumia works better than my S7. Not to mention, the camera is the best you can get on the phones market atm. People tend to focus on the negatives, dont they?

        • @NickosFoivos:
The negtatives of App Store for Windows mobile system is too negative, IMHO.

        • @jva:

You'll notice that a lot of windows phone users have Android phones or iPhones as well. You won't see too many that just use exclusively Windows phone. Like if Nick found the 950 so fantastic, why would he bother having an S7 as well? A newer model, so probably purchased after he bought the 950.

        • @Ronnnie: I'll be happy as larry to use just one of these 950s or HP ELite X3. Don't need any apps except whatsapp

        • +1

          @ozmu:

The X3 looks fantastic. Nice phone, just a pity about the camera.

        • @Ronnnie: I have two phones, coz of the nature of my job. lol

Everyone's talking about the WPs. Is the xbox deal not generating much interest?

  • Wow, a very good price and you get a free continuum accessory! great deals here!

  • how i read wrongly…buy a 950XL and get 1tb xbox one for free…

  • Incredible deal, I already have a 950XL and absolutely love it, might get a second for the better half who has been wanting one.

  • Would have been a great deal six months ago when MS were giving these phones away in the US, Canada and UK. Looks like a great deal now just because they haven't given us squat of offers till now.

    • They were not "giving these phones away", you mean the pricing was slightly better than here? Yes, but that is always the case with most tech hardware with all brands and to be expected for a number of reasons. That's not giving them away!
Although if you look at the new Xbox One S 500 GB, calculate the exchange rate to the U.S. and add their taxes on, we actually get a better deal than them at the moment, so it's not always the way. Their prices are advertised ex tax and you need to add 25% on for the exchange rate at the moment.

      • That poster is referring to the buy one get one free deal that Microsoft ran to clear inventory because they over anticipated demand. You ended up getting two phones for around $600, instead of one phone like this deal. If you split the costs with another person it was a better deal, but not technically completely free like the poster is implying.

  • Is it sold out now? cant add anything..

    • Only the screenbeam dongle is not available. I was with support on live chat ths morning. Should be back in a few days.

  • Has a pretty good camera for the price. Zeiss lens.

  • Could I get jb to price match?

  • It's amazing how much these have dropped in price since being released. I wish the nexus 6p lost value like the Lumia 950XL has. A 6p at less than half $744 you could pick them up for at time of release would be an incredible deal. Got to feel sorry for the people who paid around $1200 at time of release. It makes me wonder how many Microsoft manage to sell.

  • -7

Would have preferred if the sale was Xbox One with bonus Lumia 950.
This phone is going to be worthless soon so should only be valued as a free accessory to the Xbox.

  • Great MS site, I click to buy and get "Your shopping cart is currently empty". They might be empty but a buyer is actually looking for the deal?

    • +2

It gives me a warm feeling inside to see these console prices falling so freely :).

      • These were all $299 (or maybe without game?) before Xbone S. Come Christmas, they will need to drop to $250.

    • Dayum that's a good deal

    • +3

Honest question: would it kill M$ (and every OEM for that matter) if their products are priced this reasonably? Wouldn't it drive sales even more than initially projected?
The Lumia 950XL was over $1k at launch. Today, it's less than half that price. I for one would have bought one at this price in a heartbeat to replace my dying droid 3mths ago. But no! They just had to be hip like the others.

      • Higher prices don't deter hardcore gamers.

      • +4

"Price skimming is the strategy of charging a relatively high price during the launch of a new, innovative product and then lowering the price over time to access different points on the demand curve. Customers known as early adopters will pay steeper prices for a cutting edge product if it’s marketed as a “must have”, whether the price accurately reflects the value or not. Eventually, prices are lowered to follow the product demand curve and attract more price-sensitive customers. Theoretically, as each customer segment is “skimmed” off the top a company can capture some of the consumer surplus by charging the maximum price each segment is willing to pay."

MS are just taking advantage of a market that demands the latest and greatest tech by targeting pricing at each individual segment of the market (e.g. early adopters/majority/ozbargainers). If we didn't continue paying premium prices for brand new electronics, they couldn't continue to overcharge us. There are several other pros and cons, but at the end of the day, they've done the research and found this method makes them the most money.

        • And while they are busy applying this strategy, they are losing potential buyers to less-expensive devices on other platforms. The One Plus series, Nexuses, Xiaomi phones etc all offer great value for money. Neither of these devices have crossed the $1000 mark IIRC. Considering how the platform is 'dying' the last thing they wanna do is price their phones like they can replace my laptop or cure ebola. Then again, this is M$ we're talking about. Smartphones aren't exactly their primary focus.

        • +1

          @albert0pia:

People probably wouldn't buy it even if it was cheap from the get go. You are also comparing phones that mostly only can be grey imported (except nexus), which are generally cheaper. This deal is more competitive cost wise (considering local stock with 2 years warranty and gst) than the current nexus deal, but nowhere near as popular.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/265736

The nexus 6p has really maintained it's price since release (so definitely better value choice), while the Lumias released at similar time have lost over half their retail value.

At this point in time, I'd rather spend a bit more and get a grey import s7. Current generation hardware, 6 months old hardware vs 18 months. Surely Microsoft announce new flagships phones next month.

        • Thats why Apple continues their marketing campaign through the year to ensure enough moment to keep their devices inflated in price. They would have a bigger budget towards the end of the cycles to ensure the sales are still up in comparison to other brands and devices which may have leap frogged them by this time. Demand wanes off by the 9th month as the die-hards wait for the next cycle instead.

Man… These 950s are such a bargain, even more so with 10% student discount, 950 becomes ~$350 and xl becomes ~$450 and still having the screenbeam bonus.

Price is a steal even though new phones are coming soon. SD8xx series phones can last.

    • +1

Shame you're still unable to buy them - they don't add to cart

    • Dont need to be a student to get those discounts. Cashrewards has 5% coupon on entire store and another 8% cashback on top. Brings it down to the same price as the student offer.

      • I think you can stack those on top of each other as well. But still nice.

  • Tried doing a price match at Harvey Norman (Westfield Garden City QLD) using their price match guarantee. They said they couldn't go below cost price which was about $730 for them (even though going below cost price is not an exclusion on their price match guarantee). Note most other stores seem to have going below cost price as an exclusion for price matching/beating.

  • +1

Good news! It looks like the Lumia can now be added to the cart. I successfully purchased a 950 and have a confirmation number. FYI it looks like they've stopped bundling the screenbeam thing.

    Thanks OP :)

  • I hesitated to buy the Lumia when I have heard that it was unstable.

  • I just checked the site and 950 & 950xl phones no longer displayed in sale

    • You can at get them now at the sale price - they just dont have the dongle included

  • Hold off on buying one at the moment if you are after the Lumia like I am.

Just spoken to Live Chat, as it looks like they are not getting the screenbeam back in stock soon.

Instead "Jim" informed me of an additional discount, bringing the cost of the 950 down to $359.10. It seems they have taken the item off the site to reduce the purchase price of the phone. He is going to email me tomorrow with a link to the phone at the reduced cost.

    • Lol it's pretty pathetic really, this was a 5min job to fix that problem but it takes them over 24hrs

    • So if you get the 10% additional student discount, the cost is ~$325. Nice price at that rate. Especially since it's local stock and warranty.

    • You're sh*tting me ….. I've been trying since this offer became available to buy a Lumia 950 Black, and spoke to MS Support both yesterday and today who confirmed I couldn't buy it as the ScreenBeam was unavailable. Then they removed the bonus offer, but the black still wasn't available and when I spoke to support they told me that it was actually out of Stock and the Bonus promotional offer had expired. I complained that the offer hadn't actually been available since it was advertised as the stupid ScreenBeam wasn't in stock, but I just got a stock standard "sorry, we've run out of that phone due to the popularity of the phone" response. Please share the link if you get one.

Currently I can't even purchase a phone without the ScreenBeam as the Lumia 950 Black is out of stock. Incidentally, the Lumia 950 White shows as in stock, but once you add it to your cart, it changes to "out of stock"!!!!

    • Both 950s were unbuyable since this 'sale' due to the bonus being out of stock. They must've deliberately set it to 'Out of stock' to avoid getting asked about why they are unbuyable.

    • Hope he provides the link 😀

    • +1

      Is this still happening?

Its been almost 24 hours and there is no price change. Both 950s remain out of stock. Maybe they have just run out and aren't getting anymore?

      • That's what I've been trying to find out off MS Support (AnswerTech) since yesterday. Support can't seem to answer. They have said they expect it to be back in stock, but I'm losing faith in their responses at this point. Starting to wonder if I should go and buy the larger XL phone (that I didn't want because of the size) as it is at least available currently. There's no guarantee the 950's will ever be back in stock. Apparently the DE site sold out of stock 2 days ago, and the US site has removed Lumia's altogether.

    • +1

      Stuffed around by MS support.

I got an email today offering a $20 discount (not the price quoted) and that they would process the order by phone. I replied but didn't hear back so went back to chat. I was informed of no stock, they couldn't tell me when it would be back in stock (or if it even would be), they wouldn't offer me at the price if it does get in stock - but I can get $20 off a 950 XL which I don't want.

  • Looks like I just saved $500, have fully committed to Android through my well priced redmi note 3 which I've used the past week, will keep my L930 to occasionally look at and maybe revisit the OS in a couple of years. Maybe.

  • Thanks OP, got a 950XL for $425 with the free voucher..

Worth a whirl despite being heavily invested in Android

    • +1

How to get the free voucher ?
      Thanks

  • do they remove the bonus? you can add 950xl into the cart now and probably check out, but i cant see there is a bonus for this phone.

    • Its out of stock. They will refund you another $20 more if you speak to them about it though.

  • Cashrewards is pretty awesome. Picked up the XL last night for $440 delivered. 5% MS Store Coupon to bring it down to $474 and then another 8% cashback of $35 or so. The 950 would be around the $350ish or something with this same deal..

    • 4% on phones with cash rewards.

You can just say you are a student and get 10%..

Edit: Being nice to online sales, I have been offered $20 off the student price (I'm not a student) with the 950XL with free expedited shipping (due to the cast being out of stock). I will be claiming TRS on it.

My last venture into Windows phone was the L920.. will be interesting to see how it performs with Microsoft CRM.

      • Funny enough I also chat with them this morning on the Screenbeam and gave me another $20 off as well. Makes me wonder how puff up the pricing originally was.

        • Student price, cash rewards + $20 off from MS support - the 950 XL cost me $397
          Can't complain about that.
Now to Salary Sacrifice to get back GST and the income tax on the rest :)

  • +1

Does anyone know how to get the $20 from MS? I talked to the online chat they just said keep eye on the website for the next offer….

    • -2

Don't bother monitoring it, someone will list it up on ozbargain when this happened. You have just saved $400 as you are most likely going to be disappointed with it instability and limited apps availability.

      • +2

I've used a 930 for the last 2 years. Unless you need snapchat, there's very few apps missing. If you need those particular apps, then sure, definitely get an iOS or Android device.

Even Apple have woken up to fact most of the apps in their store are junk, and are in the process of removing hundreds of thousands of apps. You don't need a 100 apps that do exactly the same thing - that don't get updates or developer support anyway.

In my experience, stability on Windows OS is much better than any android device I've ever used. If your using Windows Insider previews, then it's not as stable - but that's the risk you take - same as running beta versions of iOS.

  • +1

Just sharing my experience getting the phone this morning.

Checked on live chat regarding potential discount in lieu of Screenbeam on top of the student discount, and they were happy to do a $20 refund after the initial transaction like others have reported. I wanted to pick up and asked if they could do that price for me in store and they said to check.

So I went to the Microsoft store and they were happy to do it. They ran out of the Screenbram but threw in the Microsoft wireless display adapter (RRP $99) instead with the student discount (had to show ID). So I got the 950XL for $449.

    Thanks Trent!

  • +1

I was swayed. In the end. Turns out my student discount, coupled with the $20 discount after talking with MS chat (which will be reimbursed once transaction goes through) and a $25 coupon I had means I managed to get the XL for $404. Hopefully cash rewards will track and it will be down to about $387!!!
So glad I didn't buy it from Harvey's during their EoFY sale for $798!!!

    • Hi,
Where can one get this 25$ coupon a few here talked about. I can see that I can get the white one for student price of 449 and then spoke to chat and they promised a 20$ back on purchase, if i purchase the white one and do it today. plus cashrewards is only 4% total I think (no 8% on top site wide)? I tried the cashrewards code z2qimygro for site widw 5% but that do not apply on top of student offer. So where is this other 25% coupon, can you/anyone share please?

      • It was a Groupon coupon issued a few days ago, which has since expired.
        They were quite popular.
As it turns out my cashrewards didn't track so I'm not far from you anyway!

  • All xbox consoles have gone up to 399? Not sure why..

    • Sale on XBoxes was till 16/09. Presume prices went up after that?
