PayPal Negative Balance

So I made a purchase the other day and I used the wrong card and an account was overdrawn - I only mention this because of the strange PayPal issue that followed, maybe it's the cause.

So anyway, payment gets made OK and then today I get a message from my PayPal saying account balance is negative which has never happened before. I can't work out how it happened :| The message says "please" pay an amount to settle the balance … it's rather strange, there's nothing that immediately makes me thing it's fake like a link or stuff like that (and it appears to be related to the above transaction) but it's basically saying settle the balance very nicely with no mention of repercussions lel.

I googled and apparently it's not unheard of though I just read SER pages without clicking other than PayPal's support which is basically like the email: no mention of repercussions. Which uh … doesn't seem like PayPal.

To further muddy the waters I looked at PayPal on my phone app and it says my balance is 0 lel.

Should I pay the small amount they're claiming my account is in arrears by? As far as I can recall PayPal has always refused to process the transaction if funds aren't available and frankly I wish they'd done that here :|

  • Looked at transaction history in app. According to PayPal I paid the amount to my bank account (which was overdrawn in a transaction with ebbay) making my PayPal balance negative. The transaction description is "Refund".

I did not do this transaction knowingly.

    The hell?

I have found that Paypal direct debits get processed overnight, well after the original transaction gets processed with the seller. It means that Paypal do become a temporary bridging lender of sorts and things get messy if it gets rejected later at the bank. Depending on your bank, you might get charged for overdrawing or failing a direct debit.

  • Give PayPal a call? I have found them good on phone.

  • Log into PayPal website and see what it says, don't click any links in emails there are a lot of scam PayPal emails out there that look totally legit. I get them every other month.
