So I want to redeem velocity points on a flight to London from Sydney. I found flights on erihad/Singapore airlines which are 90-120k depending on dates. this seems decent value in itself but it only allows you to choose economy/reward seats and nothing more.
People say using points on upgrades is best value, but how do you even redeem business class etc?

best thing to do is to transfer velocity points to krisflyer. then redeem through krisflyer redemptions.
I am not sure about award availability for low status KrisFlyers but this may not be the best idea.
As an example- Singapore Airlines, Business, MEL/SYD to London
Book via Velocity: 139K Velocity points + $79
Book via KrisFlyer: 109,012 Velocity points (transferred to 80,750 KrisFlyer points) + $282 in taxes
So I suppose ~30K in points vs ~$200.
The extras associated with booking Etihad flights via Velocity redemptions is shocking. They will charge an extra 'fee' of $USD 820 for a return business trip.
I don't think you're able to unless you're a gold or platinum velocity member for long international flights
