Visa/MasterCard Recommendation

I've just made an Amex platinum edge card. Any recommendations towards a visa/MasterCard for points?

Coles Rewards Mastercard ($89 annual fee) if you spend more than $12,000/year on it - gives 1% back in points effectively.
Otherwise, Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard - gives 0.25% back in points effectively.

There's a HSBC Platinum Visa Card that costs $149 but is refunded if you spend $6,000/year. The rate of return is around 0.5% on that.

Coles card is best because of the price protection insurance (buy something and if it reduces in price within 2 years you can claim the difference). The rewards MasterCard version also has no international transaction fees.

  • I'm looking for a card with 0 annual fee, as most of my purchases will be made with the Amex card.

I may not reach the 6,000 or 12,000 Mark.

    • Then I would recommend the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard.

      • What is the return rate of that?

        • As I wrote above, 0.25%. But the price protection insurance you can get effectively for free if you pay your balance off is the main benefit.

        • @mryan64:

Surely there is a better rate than 0.25? Seems quite low

        • @bargin424: If you're not spending more than $6,000 than there isn't much out there to recoup the annual fee to provide a positive return. There's not many Visa/Mastercards with rewards and zero annual fee.

As I said, check out the price protection insurance on it. If you use it you could end up making back a lot more than just the 0.25% from the points.
