Is This Overkill for My Network/Modem/Router?

I'm looking to get a wireless network card and have narrowed it down to these options:

https://www.asus.com/au/Networking/PCEAC68/

http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_Archer-T6E…

http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_Archer-T8E…

http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_Archer-T9E…

My current set up is:

Running ADSL2+ sitting on 4mb/s on Dodo hoping to improve speeds when switching to TPG(Hoping around ~6mb/s).

Let me know any recommendations/suggestions

  • They will all do the job just fine, as will cheaper wireless pcie cards

  • Does ur PC need to be always switched on to get Internet?

    • Preferably, i like to use WOL. So even when its off i prefer it to have internet. But that something i didn't consider previously

      • I googled wol, wake online, but what does that do?

        • Turn on the computer via network. Wake On LAN

  • I just bought the ASUS myself yesterday - I got the cheaper Asus AC56 PCI-e from memory. I saw issues with drivers and windows 10 for the Archers on Amazon.

    • How's it so far?

      • Still in the mail…. but the reviews were much better.

        • Ended up going with Asus AC56 PCI-e. Great card had some issues at the start with drivers. I needed to install the windows 8 compatible driver in order to get the utilities working.

Still having issues around connecting to 5ghz frequency

  • It is possible to score a fairly high end Wireless AC NIC for your desktop. for under $40 dollars.

The trick is to not buy a desktop NIC, but a laptop one. The Intel Wireless AC7260 is the best choice and it is available from an Australian source for $29 AUD. Free shipping.

To use it with a desktop PC, you need to find a "Mini PCI-E to PCI-E Express Wireless Wifi Adapter"
Try typing that into search and sort by lowest price.

You should find this cheaply as possible either on Aliexpress or eBay (taking note that Aliexpress has a 10 percent cashback right now)

    • Interesting why a laptop wireless nic? Is that just for price?

      • Because it's the Ozbargain way!

You can also scavenge NIC's from dead or outdated laptops and reuse it for a desktop. Most laptops made in the last 3-4 years have perfectly good Dual band 5ghz, Wireless AC with support for MIMO, so if you come across a laptop with Intel Wifi AC chipset, for just $8 dollars extra you can re-purpose it for desktop use, and it is a more elegant solution than a USB-based Wifi stick (you free up a USB port, and it requires less CPU usage).

the cheapest PCIE-based Wireless AC1200 adapter is around $60-70 dollars (TP Link brand) but for $40 dollars you can build yourself an Intel branded NIC. The driver support is better too in Windows and it's completely plug and play.

        • Nice, I'm all for doing things the cheaper way!
