As seen in The Age newspaper

Perth brides-to-be who are short of cash now have a 'fairy-godmother' in the form of Karen McCommell.

The owner of Perth boutique Bridal by Aubrey Rose is giving away wedding dresses worth thousands of dollars to brides in need.

She took to Facebook in order to publicise the event she is calling "Aubrey Rose gives back".

She has set aside two hours on Monday morning, starting at 9.30, for brides who are short of cash to choose a free wedding dress - worth around $3000.

"Brides will be allowed in two at a time and have 10 minutes to choose their free gown from our sample range," said the post.

Yeah, like it's really only going to be those in need who are lining up :/

But I can see people camping out the night before (and for good reason, unlike apple store campouts 😂)

I think someone should donate a suzuki swift for a wedding present as well :)

I don't think it's going to prevent women acting like Bridezilla regardless of whether the dress is free or not lol

      • Doesn't matter what you wear, it's all about the moment.

      I'm thinking stripper heals.

      • +9

        What do they cure exactly?

        • +2

The crystal shoes fight off the Spinster Curse that is spreading through the west, women who know what they want, how to get it and have unlocked the cryptic secret of why a woman needs a man, turns out everyone was reading it upside down and it was really, a man needs a woman.

        • Having no internet.

  • I'd love to see pics if anyone goes XD

I have no doubt the dresses will be 8-12 (at most) and there will be a lot of size 16+ trying to squeeze into them. I don't use Facebook but went and looked at this shops Facebook page. They look like a very loving, vibrant business. I'm sure there will be photos posted. In the meantime, if you are looking for. A laugh you could always go to the people of Walmart web page.

    • I hope there is no protest after this demanding they should cater for the size 16+ like what happened to Lululemon and Victoria’s Secret….

    • someone asked on the fb page if they have sizes 16+, they responded yes.

    • +1

Actually I had a look on their website and it seems if you are an average size 14 - then you shouldn't even bother turning up as there are NONE that size! But if you're a size 20, 22 or 24 - you're a winner as there is one of each those sizes available! Size 10 and size 12 will have a chance - 6 of each of those sizes.
      They have:
      1x size 6
      1x size 8
      6x size 10
      6x size 12
      3x size 18
      1x size 20
      1x size 22
      1x size 24

      • +1

Being the good cop I see 😀

        • +1

Ha! Ha! Totes! And no size 16 if you go by their website. When you're getting up to those larger sizes you gotta hope that they are laced up at the back. They're a little more forgiving then.
Maybe it is really old stock and they're not the most up to date designs so no-one would buy them anyway - nor rent them. Being samples maybe they've been tried on too many times and it shows - so might as well get some advertising mileage and give them away.
It just sounds like cattle lining up….. on parade.
Would have been better to have run a competition and selected the best responses and then get them to come in, give them a glass of champers and really make a fuss of them and make them feel special.
You're right - could become a frenzy fight outside in the queue. Last one standing gets to go in and choose!

    • If the dress doesn't fit suck it in! said the SA. Wedding dress shopping can be a nightmare. I've been cut out of dresses before.

        Pics or it didn't happen…

  • +10

Can men get free wedding dress too? I want to look pretty…

    • Sure. Take the size 22

  • +3

Very nice of them I suppose, but seems arbitrary to give them 10 minutes to choose. Means they won't even have time to try any dress on. In other words, most dresses they give away will probably be re-sold as they either don't fit well or they simply don't look that good on. I mean, has any bride in the history of weddings ever bought the first dress they tried on? And now they can't even do that.

Anyway, just my thought. Hopefully the dresses goes to people actually in need although I assume everyone getting married (and many whom are not) will be lining up regardless of financial status.

    • They could try at least two dresses on, perhaps even three or four if they avoid flapping about whilst doing it.

It's a fair restriction, otherwise some of these girls will hang around all day and these people do have a business to run.

    • +2

I bought my wedding dress online from Bloomingdale’s. I saw it and love everything about the dress. Highly likely you will have to alter your wedding dress anyway (e.g the length and the waist), so fit is not an issue. As long as you know what style that looks good on you (A-line, mermaid, etc) and you know your normal clothing size then it should be fine.

Just don't push too far - e.g if you know you're a size 14 thinking that size 10 will fits ok because that's the only size available and vice versa. There will be other dresses, treat this as a lucky draw and don't go in with high expectation.
I think this one is better because you can see the materials yourself :).

  • +1

Ah, this is going to end up like that episode of Friends with the whistles and the violence.

  • +1

    Who wants to get married?

  • 41 brides but 52 upvotes. There's going to be some disappointed brides.

  • For some reason, I just can't see this ending well…

  • +11

It is hilarious how this will end in such a tragedy… The business owner is thanking everyone for the publicity but by the end of the day she will be worn down with the 'shopper's asking for more freebies as they 'can't afford to buy anything' and she will get a big backlash from the the out-of-luck brides on facebook that would have taken the day off work to get a dress and now their wedding is ruined! lol

  • +6

Why can't they let the brides rent the dresses?

    • +6

would've been much better donating a few dresses to rent. pay it forward that keeps on going forward to people genuinely in need.

      • +1

I think giving free rentals will be a much better option.

    • +1

      Advertising

For brides on an actually budget you can get some nice dresses from op shops if you keep your eye out. It might not be the one, but then would you prefer to wear your money or travel/eat?

If you're going to write a sentence in the title please don't capitalise every word.

The deal link says 20 dresses, The Age says 35 and the title says 41… o_0

    • +2

      35 dresses + 6 pairs of shoes = 41 brides

There have been updated posts on Facebook updating it to the 35 dresses.

      And it's a title, it gets auto-capitalised.

      Stop nitpicking.

      • -2

The Mount Hawthorn business will be giving away 35 dresses along with eight pairs of crystal shoes donated by Crystal Shoe Couture.

        35 + 8 = 43

        And it's a title, it gets auto-capitalised.

Pretty sure you could override the auto-capitalisation otherwise the title shouldn't be a sentence. Something like "Free Wedding Dresses (<$3000) for 35 Brides + 8 Pairs of Crystal Shoes @ Bridal by Aubrey Rose [WA]" would've been much easier to read.

        Stop nitpicking.

I'm trying to make the site easier for everyone to use, titles should be concise.

        • -1

Read their Facebook page - 6 pairs

No need to override the auto-capitalisation. Again, it's a title, it can have capitals.

I'm sure the title only takes half a second longer to understand than your re-wording, and explains the whole point of the give away - that it's ideally not just a simple give away, that it's aimed at a certain demographic.

          @Spackbace:

Read their Facebook page - 6 pairs

Great, I was pointing out the inconsistency.

No need to override the auto-capitalisation. Again, it's a title, it can have capitals.

          1. Titles should be concise, not sentences.

          2. Sentences in which every word is capitalised are difficult to read. The words "Who", "Are", "Short", "Cash" and "Choose" don't describe the deal and shouldn't be capitalised.

I'm sure the title only takes half a second longer to understand than your re-wording,

OzBargain attracts at least 60,000 unique visitors per day, that's more than 8 person-hours wasted.

and explains the whole point of the give away - that it's ideally not just a simple give away, that it's aimed at a certain demographic.

That would be better left for the deal description since it's more of a marketing strategy than a condition of the deal — as you pointed out in the first comment.

        • @Scrooge McDuck: Wash day today? Nothing clean, right? :)

  • I must say that this thread did make me visit the people of Walmart .com for the first time in years. Great to see the good Ol USA is on the same trajectory, just further along.

  • So how is it going?

  • Looks like it went well.
