Cheapest deal I could find seeing as though Amazon doesn't ship to Australia.

Most sellers on eBay US charge $30-40 for shipping, plus there is currently only one listed on eBay AU for $130.

$49.99 USD + $12.26 shipping = $62.25 USD, converted to approx AUD = $81.75 AUD (currency rates change frequently)

At checkout, choose shipping as 'DHL Saver - $12.26' as it's the cheapest delivery option (still 3-5 delivery which is fast). If you want it delivered faster, there's other delivery options too.

Thanks to systmworks for the tip - there's a cheaper option for delivery if you buy 2, US$20 vs $12 for a single one. So you save $2 per device ordering a pair

How to set up Amazon Echo in Australia (https://devdiner.com/internet-of-things/how-do-i-set-up-an-a…)

27/10/2016 - UPDATE

I have recently got in touch with B&H customer service regarding pre-orders, and was told that they're completely out of stock so the next batch will be in stock on 11/11/2016
The previous date was 05/11 but sadly got pushed ahead.

This might be a huge deal-breaker for some people, despite how cheap they're selling it for compared to other sites. However, I am now thinking of cancelling my pre-order and looking to buy elsewhere as I don't really want to wait that long…

oh my god its a smart….speaker>?

Where have you been for the last few years? The world has moved on since you've been away.

    • Do you need a speaker to connect to? Does this have an inbuilt speaker?

      • +2

It has an inbuilt speaker so speakers are optional

        • It does have a speaker but ive heard its pretty crappy. Not like the normal echo. Can bluetooth to a speaker or plug in with 3.5mm jack

        • +11

          @jackwoz:

          3.5mm jack

          No courage

  • +2

Thanks, ordered a white one. Very happy with my existing Black Echo.

FYI freight for 2 is US$20 vs $12 for a single one. So you save $2 per device ordering a pair (if you need 2 or are splitting with a mate).

    My purchase came to AUD$81.89

    • +2

If you don't mind me asking, what do you use it for? Have you had any regional (Aus) compatibility issues?

      • Voice control of home automation, smart lights. Asking questions (similar to Siri and OK Google). Playing Pandora.

        • Do you control Lifx or Hue?

        • +1

          @jackwoz: LIFX in 3 rooms, 4 bulbs.
About to order another for ensuite (as they are really bright, and I've just painted the room a darker shade).

        • @systmworks: Does it work well with the LIFX? Any issues?

        • How do you set that up?

        • @fruit: Alexa has native support.

          http://www.lifx.com/pages/alexa

        • What does it need to play pandora? I mean wi-fi or?

        • @baldur: yep wifi. It expects an always-on internet connection.

Works with free Pandora. And has way less ads than when streaming off phone app. USA ads.

        • Would love to know if it has built in IR and RF blaster? Right now I have the broadlink RM2 doing all the blasting like shutters, aircon and home theatre automation.

If it doesn't have built in blaster. Can it control the RM2?

        • +1

@sirs2k: no IR or RF. It controls devices over your home network or over the internet (for those devices with cloud control) using "skills" you add via the Alexa app.

        • @sirs2k:
Harmony hub integrates (via IFTTT) with echo

        • Wish there was a way to connect with Sonos. Since there is no cloud connectivity, I'm guessing it's a no.

        • @vchan: Sonos have Bluetooth dont they ? The Dot can connect to speakers via BT.

        • @systmworks: Not Play 1. They are wireless speakers that connect to your WiFi directly but can be accessed only via app rather than cloud. I don't see them in IFTTT as well. It's quite disappointing that way. Unless some Sonos user knows of a workaround I don't think they can be controlled in any other way.

        • @vchan: I'm guessing you could get a recipe for IFTTT: Amazon Echo to Logitech Harmony Hub activity, which in turn would control the Sonos.

        • @vchan: There's a Sonos skill for the Echo…

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlOBJJyulI4

..and Sonos have announced native support will launch next year:

          https://www.wired.com/2016/08/amazon-echo-adds-sonos-voice-c…

        • @whiffyfuzzball: Yeah. Read the article after I googled. I also got a mail from sonos for beta testing their new spotify to sonos direct integration. Hopefully it can automatically play spotify app while casting it to sonos.

        • @whiffyfuzzball: Oh thanks for the first link! Will see if it is useful.

    • Nice find! Will add it to the description, cheers

  • Do u need the original echo to pair with theae?

    • +2

Nope, stand alone, but need to connect to hdmi, Bluetooth, or (I think) wired external speaker.

      • Does it really come with HDMI?

        • I think so - but could be wrong - I know it supports Bluetooth and 3.5mm headphone type socket.

        • No, there's no HDMI. It's just Bluetooth and 3.5mm.

        • @MightyAtom:
OK, I must be wrong :/

Not sure how easy it is to set the timezone and location. I heard there was a hack you could do but also heard they are clamping down on it. Anyone know if its still possible?

      • Thanks for that. I have read this article before and noticed on the comments some were mentioning that it wasnt working anymore

    • +2

As of a few weeks ago you can only change timezone.

      • Yes this is important to note, you cannot change the address anymore

  • +3

Just in case anyone wants to know the differences (like I did):

    http://m.androidcentral.com/amazon-echo-vs-dot-vs-tap-which-…

Oh and just stumbled across this after doing some research:

    https://www.cnet.com/au/news/google-home-vs-amazon-echo/

  • What functions don't work because we are in Australia?

    • Order from Amazon Prime.

    • +1

You can't order an Uber / Dominos Pizza, ask traffic, or for good Thai restaurants near here.
Asking the weather works if you ask "What is the weather in City, Australia?" - as opposed to "what is the weather", "will it rain tomorrow", etc.

While it'd be great to have these features, it's been great even with a limited featurset. As mentioned, it'll do lights if that is your thing. I have it linked with my Logitech Harmony via IFFT, which is fantastic, and I've got this Kodi integration sorta working (working via Heroku per instructions, but am still troubleshooting running it local device on my network).

I only wish this was available earlier. I have the full speaker version right next to my amplifier, and only use Alexa to ask it to get Kodi to play via the amp instead.

      • Yeah, I've ordered one, and all I really want is to be able to:

        1) Control LIFX and Harmony hub
        2) Set timers hands-free in kitchen
        3) Add items to grocery list hands-free in kitchen.

      • So all the measurements will be in inches and F?

        • No you can specify metric in the app/website.

      • +1

Not really impressed with IFTTT, try Yonomi.

        • Agree. Yonomi rocks. You can actually say "Alexa. Turn On <Activity>" which is a lot more natural than IFTTT There's direct Harmony integration for Echo now too, but I haven't tried that yet.

        • @onceler:
Been using the Harmony skill for a while… very similar to Yonomi, but they both need volume control.

      • Actually, you can ask for traffic and cinema times with a little bit of tweaking :-)

  • +2

Can you put on of these in your car? Would seem handy while driving.

    • +4

      "Alexa apply the brakes"

      • +2

"Alexa avoid old granny walking slowly across the road"

      • Alexa:"Sorry, I don't understand your command"

    • Sure,it needs power via USB so you'd need a usb car charger, and for the internet you could connect it to your phone WiFi.

    • Couldn't you just use google assistant/siri for that?

      • Definitely. But he might prefer the Amazon voice recognition over the others. They all respond in their own way.

  • +1

Had already pre-ordered with them - this is such a good price.

  • +2

Nice find OP! Not sure if I should grab this or wait for the Google Home.

    • +2

I'd go for the echo dot purely because I find "Okay Google" much more awkward to say. It just doesn't feel natural to me.

  • +1

Thank you been waiting for it on B and H ordered x2
Got full echo already working great in Brisbane
Using to play online radio and LifX bulbs to turn on and off changing colours
Also setting wakeup alarms -dude from Nemo movie yelling at you to wake up

    • +1

How to set it up properly? Can you provide a link?

      Cheers

      • Just followed all the links from different forums some listed on comments here
Had to set it up using a city in USA same timeline as Sydney
Use your desktop computer initially to set up
Also download Amazon underground app on android tablets etc for free apps from Amazon

  • If anybody uses Echo or Echo Dot in Australia, which smart plug do you use? I can't find any compatible ones :(

    BE BACK SOON —-

Thank you for your patience while we break for the Sukkos holiday. Although online ordering is unavailable, you may still add items to your cart or wish list. Checkout will resume at Tuesday 7:30 PM EDT.

    • Yes, B&H is known for this. They shut down the ability to order on their site on public holidays, and other times that their B&M stores are closed.

Great place to order from, but they do have the annoyance..

    • Same here.

  • I clicked on this thinking it was a robot vacuum..

    • +1

It can probably control (some) robot vacuums…

  • I'm waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to buy one or two. I'm pretty sure Amazon will drop their price nicely.

  • Holding out for the Echo Black - anyone here with any experience with both the Dot and Echo that can vouch for the extra features of the latter?

    • Dot is not out yet. So doubt someone will have experience. Echo has speakers included while dot does not. That allows you to use your own speaker if you consider that to be an important criteria hence the lower cost.

      • Dot has speakers too, however they're just not as loud so it may not be everybody's cup of tea. That is where Bluetooth kicks in to connect a speaker

I haven't read this review yet, but the title is "Amazon Echo Dot review (2016): Forget the Echo. Buy this instead."

      Might be worth reading

  • Anyone know workarounds to get this to work with Mi Smart Home/Yeelights? I can do the same sort of thing through Google Now, but it would be nice to have a fixed/remote solution!

    • Does GoogleNow control yeelight and other devices?

No the echo doesn't work with Mi devices, i have both, no integration.

      • If you use tasker with the autovoice and yeelight plugin you can easily control yeelights. If you create Mi Home widgets for your scenes you can get Tasker to "trigger" them but that requires some fiddling…

Damn, I would really like some sort of interface between MiHome and IFTTT or similar!

        • got it.
MiHome would kill everything else with their competitive pricing. If it does get IFTTT i can't see how all other smart device manufacturers can survive with their FAT margins.

  • I wonder how Google's new smart home device will compare to this… they just got into this game, but their neural logical machine thinking is a lot more advanced than amazon.

    • Hard to say but Amazon has a gigantic head start. Googles only real advantage is with the chromecast audio streaming. Yeah it's nice and all the extra search engine powers but noone uses it. Seriously how often do people actually go Ok google and ask a question?

Amazon is light years ahead in the home automation and the manufacturing I am sure the echo price will drop considerably to keep market share. Google really needs a bigger game changer and well gen 1 google home isn't there yet.

  • Anyone know how this will work / works with the original echo or with more than one in your house?

Eg. Alexa play "xyz" on Spotify. Does music play from both? Or will only the one that hears it play? 🤔

    • they are not connected, they act as two stand alone devices. multi room audio probably will come software upgrade in god knows when if ever.

    • You can also assign 2 different trigger words (eg "Alexa", and "Echo")

    • "If you have more than one device using the same wake word, Alexa responds intelligently from the Echo you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception), and performs the requested task."

  • I see the shipment date is 6th November. Was it always this or has it been extended?
