  • damn i need this. my garden is like a jungle after returning on holiday

    • +1

I Seriously doubt you can clear off a jungle with this thing.

  • Do everyone a favour bay not filling up our landfill.

Do everyone a favour by writing in English.

      • +3

        Nein

    • So what should I use? Scissors?

      • tweezers

      • Use a proper line trimmer, like Honda or Husqvarna that's guaranteed not to be rubbish.

  • which one would be better, this one or the one from Aldi this saturday??

    • +13

Aldi one, plus you got a 60 day trial period.

The ALDI is a IE34F full crank engine, based on Japanese Komatsu G26 design.

This engine can and will take commercial use

The Homelite is cheap nasty half crank, "engineered" by TTI to be manufactured for the lowest possible price

Homelite where a good brand when USA Made and owned, now its TTI/Ryobi company, would not piss on them….

      • Based on, you mean a cheap Chinese made copy of a Komatsu G26 design?.

        • Yes, they copied [very well] a premium Japanese engineered product

I cannot fault the performance and bang-for-buck, if anything it should be sold for a lot more, refer:

          https://www.victa.com/au/en_au/product-catalog/domestic/trim…

Most of the power equipment stuff from China is a copy of Japanese, history repeats!

    • Wats the price on Aldi one?

    • -1

None, both would be crap compared to proper brands (Honda, Husqvarna, etc).

  • Is it actually any good?

    • +2

Good points •Excellent at trimming vertically and horizontally, and very good at trimming long grass.
      •Very good controls.
      •Very well balanced.
•Individual pre-cut lines are very easy to replace.
Bad points •Some may find the shaft too short for both trimming and edging.
•Noticeable vibration, but it’s not too annoying.

      From Choice magazine

      • -1

Possibly also add "Is 2-stroke" to bad points

        • +1

Apart from having to pre-mix fuel, why is that a bad point?

I've got both a 4 stroke and 2 stroke trimmer, and the 4 stroke is harder to start, not as powerful, and a lot heavier.

        • @Bacchus:
I'll quote another comment by @wchau
"2-stroke engines do not have the same lifespan as a 4-stroke engine (without a dedicated lubrication system the 2 stroke engines wear faster)
2-stroke Need to buy additional 2 stroke oil and then manually mix it with the petrol.
2-stroke engines are not fuel efficient which will cost you more over time
          2-stroke engines produce more pollution

Plus its just annoying to mix the oil and petrol before you can use it.. just want to pour petrol and go."

        • +1

@reactor: Its the little things I guess, cause if you have a mower ( normally thats 4 stroke ) you can just share the same jerry can and pour to either .. no need for a separate jerry can for the 2 stroke to ( and to carry around if cutting elsewhere ).

I have a 4 stroke mower, edger(with wheels) and trimmer. All use the same petrol, so no chance of using wrong type.
If your 4 stroke is harder to start then you've not got a good one..

        • @reactor: I think realistically it depends on the application. 2 stroke engines are generally lighter than 4 stroke as you can theoretically achieve the twice the power with a 2 stroke than an equally sized 4 stroke.

This is probably the most important point for me as in a whipper snipper I am looking for something powerful and also light. Don't want to be hanging onto something heavy for too long.

'2-stroke Need to buy additional 2 stroke oil' - not sure I agree with how you've worded this. Both 2 and 4 stroke engines require oil. 2 stroke is mixed with the fuel, 4 stroke isn't. Its not a matter of 'additional' just a different application.

Store your 2 stroke mixed in another can and its ready when you want it. Don't really see it as a big deal.

        • +1

@kevsta89: Sure, what I meant to say is that the oil needed for 2 stroke is unique and you need to buy it.. as opposed to 4 stroke which you can share with your car oil ( yes you have to buy it too ) ( can't remember if buying new 4 strokes it comes pre oiled ? I think? )

Anyway doesn't matter Pros and cons to everything, big or little deal is up to the individual but at least its out there for people to know and decide. All good mate.

  • Are you sure it has had a price drop? I checked it after the Aldi deal appeared and it was this price. Not much history on PH

  • +3

I have the red homelite trimmer. I hate it. I would not wish it on anyone. Hard to start from new, parts falling off. Cheap but nasty.

    • +2

Also had one when I first moved into my place. Got sick of it after 6 months and sold it on Gumtree for $50 and bought a decent Stihl.

As you state, the homelite would never start when I wanted it to, and I found the short length and angle of the shaft forced me to hold it awkwardly and hunch forward the entire time. Absolute piece of garbage.

      • My red homelite trimmer is still going great after 18 years.
Use premium unleaded instead of regular unleaded as it tends to go off after a short time.

  • A silly question? - I have been using Talon (1200w) Electric trimmer, has been doing a decent job but now struggling with parts, thinking of switching to petrol version. Does the aldi version accept just unleaded or you have to do the mixing? are there trimmers out there that will accept just unleaded…

    • +2

If it's 2-stroke, I believe you need to mix. I'd be interested in a 4-stroke trimmer too… would prefer to just use the same fuel as the mower

      • thanks for the tip, I'm on the same boat - use the same fuel for both and trying to avoid the hassle of mixing - so if it is 2 stroke then you'd need to mix…

  • This appears to have a longer shaft over the other model.

    • +7

Of course it does - it's the BLACK one!

      • Of course it does - it's the BLACK one!

Guess I was to subtle with my post!

2-stroke engines do not have the same lifespan as a 4-stroke engine (without a dedicated lubrication system the 2 stroke engines wear faster)
2-stroke Need to buy additional 2 stroke oil and then manually mix it with the petrol.
2-stroke engines are not fuel efficient which will cost you more over time
    2-stroke engines produce more pollution

Plus its just annoying to mix the oil and petrol before you can use it.. just want to pour petrol and go.

Anyway skip it add a few more $ and go with a 4 stroke.. less hassles I reckon.

    • I like the aroma of 2 stroke, its like perfume.

  • Ahh, so that explains the $95 Black Hedge Trimmer
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/homelite-black-26cc-hedge-trimme…

to compete with $99 one at ALDI
    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-22-…

Anyone has an experience with these Hedge Trimmers ?

    • Im looking at these two also. Im leaning towards the bunnings one so fat but I'll wait for more comments.

I bet our Honda 25cc 4 stroke line trimmer beats the crap out of this in pure engine power and reliability. That thing is a beast for a 25cc.

This line trimmer in this thread deal is just cheap crap. It would probably last you a year then start having problems.

    • I'm doing some research on this and you are correct - if you've got the GX35 it seems to have a very good reputation they are selling at $339-399

      • GX35 is the Honda 35cc. I've got the Honda GX25 25cc. But even the Honda GX25 is suprisingly powerful for a 25cc line trimmer motor.
