How does Thinkpad T460s($1279) compare to Acer - Aspire R5-471T($879) in deal in real life use?

    • +1

Not even any sort of comparison. The S models are slimmer then the normal models.

My impression was that the S is more expensive than the normal 460.

    • +2

I haven't compared the spec of both, but Thinkpads are definitely much much better built compared to Acer. Worth $400 extra?? That is a question you need to ask.
Secondly Thinkpd is not 2 in 1. So decide what you want and if it is a 2 in 1, Acer is the answer.

  • Cheers scotty, great find!

that's awesome!!! I recently invested in the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, using it right now. LOVE IT. Best computing decisoin to date for working while traveling, on planes, buses, trains etc.

    • +2

Question - when in tent mode, does the laptop have rubber feet to stop it moving around? Like when you use it on an airplane?

    • is the weight make it more than easy enough to take on holidays if you were travelling overseas? I can't find a compromise between the old 10"-11" netbooks and getting the cheaper end laptops , or if you want power and performance an ultrabook etc in 11-12" is the best you seem to go with Lenovos.

The problem though is then you're screwed for home use/the other 99% of time your not on holidays where a 14"-15.6" does wonders for working off compared to a 11" screen.

I just noticed how like the X1 yoga was so figured perhaps the lack of weight made up for the huge size in finding a backpage/bag to carry it on holidays with (in return you get bigger browsing experiences while on trips overseas though?)

how is the battery life for the everyday person running wifi or 4g internet and browsing, and or listening to music and the usual things you'd be clicking on a laptop casually?

  • How does one spec the OLED screen on the X1?

    • I have found that the screen upgrades are not available on the system configuration menu for the discounted models.

      • +1

Ok,chatted with Lenovo. Apparently OLED is out of stock but can be ordered by chatting with the online rep.
        It is a $600 option.
I chatted with Norman Rep ID 2900721217.
He can help order but waiting time is 4 weeks.

Tell me more. My Lenovo just went bust an hour ago.

    • yes, I have been trying to find it without luck too.

  • Anyone have a POV re the better buy of the t460s and the dell xps 13s that have recently been popping up in the dell outlet store for 1299? For typical small business/ home office type use.

    • +6

XPS 13 is a smaller/lighter package overall — it's more like a 13.3" packed into a 12" case. Comparing to T460s, it's lighter, has Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C port, longer battery life. It's generally quite a nice piece of hardware.

For small business use however, I'll personally go for T460s. Bigger screen, ThinkPad keyboard & TrackPoint, user-upgradeable RAM & SSD, docking station support, etc.

      • Thanks! Fast and helpful!

  • Any experiences or idea of what the T460s battery is like? I'm coming from a retina MacBook Pro 15" and don't really want to downgrade much in the battery department.

    • Expect around 8.15 hours battery life.

      • is that on decent screen brightness i.e. not down to lowest, and typical things like wifi internet , web browsing, some music off the hdd etc?

        • Wifi on, continuous Web browsing, normal power scheme, screen brightness max

        • @scrimshaw:

with just the 3 cell battery, as these have a second removable 6 cell right?

        • @SaberX:

No. The T460s (notice the S) does not have a 6 cell option. It has 3 cell built in and 3 cell removable, that gives it 8 hour battery life. Unfortunately, 8 hours of usage may be too little for some people and the previous T450 had a much better option where you could have 6 cell extended battery giving it some ridiculous battery life (at the cost of some weight)

I could be wrong, but I cannot see a 6 cell battery optional accessory for the newer gen T460s. You also cannot hotswap it!

The deal is now over though :( so it's too late to umm and ahh about it.

        • @scrimshaw: Yes for T460s it's 2x 3 cell batteries but neither are removable.

        • @scrimshaw:

I think I was thinking of the X260 where scotty or someone else in one of the other recent Lenovo bargain posts mentioned/pointed me that way, saying that one could achieve 18 hours battery life by having the 3 cell built in and 6 cell optional/removable on top.

I amnot sure how much more the 6 cell would cost, and how much weight it adds - sounds good?

8 hour battery life is insane… I hear that 'quoted' on reviews, but if that is screen on, full web browsing, internet on etc. then that is truly beyond the 3-3.5 hours I see on my 15.6" standard asus at home. Hard to imagine many using it for up to 8 hours+ without a charge though? Bar some odd long distance flying perhaps?

Yeah, can't umm and ahhh about it, but good to know for the future.

not sure what you meant by notice the S though? it is just "T460" right, and not "T460S" if that is what you were getting at?

        • @SaberX:

See this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/270957 and you'll understand

        • @scrimshaw:

So in other word T460S has 2 x 3 cell inbuilt batteries.

T460 per the linked ozbargain post comes with 3 cell inbuilt, with the option to upgrade and get a second 6 cell battery - therefore a different model to the T460S? Anything I missed?

I recommend trying to give Lenovo's sales a call. If you're lucky, they may give you a better deal.

They offered me the T460s for $1107.

    • More deets please? How did you contact them, and what did you ask them for/about?

      Much appreciated! :)

      • Sales contact number is 1300 557 073 and they operate Mon - Fri 8:30 to 6pm AEST, so am not sure how you managed to contact them around midnight…

I just said that I was interested in ordering a T460s and asked what price they could give me. I have no clue whether this will work for everyone, but it won't hurt to try!

        • I hit up the sales consultants on their website chat system :) Will try the phone number. Thanks.

    • I just contacted them… and they tried to offer me a price that was worse than with this coupon code :(

  • Wish they did the lower model X1 Yoga for like $1200!

  • Is it worth extending the warranty to 2 years? (I'll probably look to use this laptop for the next 3 years).

  • I ordered the X1 Carbon on the 17th October and the estimated shipping date was between 2-3 weeks.

It has already arrived in the country however and has cleared customs and is set to be delivered on the 27th of this month (hopefully!)

Just thought I'd post my experience so far as there were a few questions regarding shipping times last bargain :)

  • Do you think a 1k spec'd yoga 260/460 will available anytime soon?

  • Hey Scotty - need some help. Just tried to buy a T460s and no go, customer service saying that the deal this week is code "deals" for 1599….any suggestions?

    • (used web chat and spoke with "Nathan" who tells me that I should "visit the official Lenovo website for deals"….)

    • 1DAYDEAL is a special code given to me by Lenovo. I don't think their online chat support would know about it

      • all good, I killed all my browser sessions and started over and I think I've managed to get it to work now, thanks!
