Prepaid SIM ID / Personal Details Query

What happens if you don't provide all your real details?

Will the SIM activation fail? And even if it doesn't fail, will the service get cut off when details are verified somewhere down the line? What details exactly are verified (for example, name, d.o.b., ID)?

I'm just uneasy about giving out all my personal details to lots of different companies every time for cheap prepaid deals. (I'd appreciate a straightforward answer instead of telling me not to bother with these deals or a lecture not to worry about such matters, yada yada yada….)

  • What will happen is the wrong details will be sent to whatever internal security agency runs the identity check and they will inform the provider that you cannot be verified and they will not activate your service.

I'm guessing name, DOB and whichever ID document detail (drivers license number or medicare number/position/card colour) you provided is what is used to verify that you are a real person but it may also include address as well as other things.

  • Not sure what will happen, but for the record, its mandated by law (telecommunications act), that providers of telephony services like mobile phones must collect your identity.

So you will have to provide this information, uneasy or not.

I entered the wrong medicare number - a new one was on the way to me which I wasnt aware of and the service was rejected, until I then used my DL.

The sim wasn't locked on the first input. So try it
