Is It Worth Upgrading My 2012 Samsung Laptop (i7 2675QM 2.20Ghz, 8GB Memory, 750GB w/ EC 8GB)

Update i got home and realised that i short changed myself.
my laptop is a superior model to the one below and therefore worthwhile upgrading.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z 15.6-inch Laptop (Intel Core i7 3615QM 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD SuperMulti DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Nvidia Graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit)

TL;DR

Is it worth upgrading my latop? - SSD & RAM
Intel Core i7 2675QM (2.20 GHz)
8 GB Memory 750GB
w/ EC 8GB HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6750M

Hi all,

I ask once again to dig into the collective wisdom of OzB.

I have this Samsung Laptop n700 I purchased whilst I was in the UK in 2012.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131…

Intel Core i7 2675QM (2.20 GHz)
8 GB Memory 750GB
w/ EC 8GB HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6750M

It's starting to feel sluggish on start up but everything else about it i am still happy with. I absolutely still love the finish and design, i kinda want to keep it until it is dead just for this.

I mainly using it for online browsing, word, excel and watching videos. If i do play games it's cheapie stuff i picked up from humble bundle, i don't mind if i can't play games on it anymore.

I was wondering if it was possible to firstly upgrade with with an SSD and maybe some more RAM?
Secondly if it is worth doing at all considering the tech is four years old.
Thirdly how hard is it to do myself / can anyone recommend in melbourne somewhere that will do it for me?

Thanks in advance.

yea an SSD will work wonders on this laptop, I recommend someone who is familiar with acronis or paragon backup software (was previously free on ozbargain) to clone your current hard drive and put it on an SSD, recommend getting at least a 500gb SSD though to accommodate all your data you have on your current hard drive, or try and match it space for space.

8gb of ram should be plentiful, if you want to double check, open up your task manager when your PC is booting up and click on the performance tab. See what % is being used on your hard drive and ram, if your hard drive is hitting 99% then you know its your hard drive, if your ram usage is capping at almost 8gb then you know your ram needs to be increased.

Any computer shop should be able to clone your hard drive, if not then maybe one of your tech friends will know.

    • thanks for the advice.
My hard drive is actually less than 50% full.
but yeah in terms of SSD i probably go with 500gb - most things i'll store on my external drive if i need any more.

I would just upgrade the hard drive to a SSD, specs seems pretty decent to me for what you are doing. It will make a LOT of difference in terms of sluggishness. I guess the battery life is probably not so great, but if you don't mind it is not very mobile, upgrading SSD is probably the single improvement that will make the most impact.

I don't know if you have the same laptop as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW6__sVECHw

Have a look and see if you are up for the upgrade. :)

    • battery life seems to only get 2 hrs now off charge. when i first got it i could push 5!

also watched the vid. i could do it myself but i still have nightmares from the time i replaced the internal battery in my nexus 5 using that prying tool.

i'll probably do the back up myself and get someone to just install the SSD.

Processor still solid, exceeds the current dual core ultrabook i5s and i7s and about on par with the current i5-6300HQ. 8gb of RAM should still be good.

SSD will make it feel like a brand new machine. I'd recommend a clean install rather than cloning your old hard drive… back up your files beforehand to an external disk or your nearest cloud, and make an installation USB (here) https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/15088/windows-creat…

If you can successfully wield a screw driver then the upgrade of the SSD itself is pretty quick and painless.

For bonus points, if you don't use your CD drive, you can buy a caddy that replace the CD drive to give you an extra hard drive spot, you can put your old hard drive there.

    • cheers this is really helpful.
with the windows installation usb can i use my current windows key or do i need to buy a new one?
      I never upgraded from 7 =D

      • A fellow member of the Windows 7 master race!

You can use your current one.

  • I upgraded my 2011 Asus U36SD (i7 2620M, 8GB) to a 500GB SSD and it has had a new lease on life. Definitely recommend going to SSD in your Samsung. I used Easus to clone my drive, then used Gparted (live USB) to align the SSD. I have since done a fresh install (windows 10, post upgrade).
