Do Telcos Offer Discount if You Recontract?

Hi all,

My iPhone contract with Virgin is almost up and I'm looking to get a new phone. Do Virgin or other telcos give some sort of discount if you recontract with them? I saw on the ABC Checkout they probably do, so I'll ask them next week. Just tossing up between signing a new contract or buying it outright and get TRS and prepaid.

Thanks!

    Prepaid FTW

    Contracts are for suckers.

    • It depends. I think for iPhones sometimes it could be better, but for android phones it's probably cheaper to get prepaid.

My current plan works out to be about $18 pm for 3.3 GB for an iPhone 6 if you subtract the phone cost. I'm looking at the SE (I really like the smaller screen) which is $40 pm. The cheapest iPhone SE is $500 which so the effective plan over 24 months would cost around $20 for 2 GB (with rollover and unmetered streaming).

      • One little slip over your allocated data and you are deeply screwed.

yeah that's true, but I'm pretty diligent on data usage. I'm a bit over contracting though, I do like those discounted SIM deals that keep coming every now and then.

        • @iSamurai: Join us.

Or just tell Virgin hey dudes give me a better offer or I'm leaving. You have nothing to lose and the person at the other end probably has a quote or gets commission.

  • Usually they offer early termination of existing contract without any penalty if you sign a new contract. So the best you save is couple of months of handset repayments.

    • oh wow okay, I could've asked them a few months ago!

  • I got an extra 3gb data from voda

Nah, the checkout claim all these things, but lots are rubbish/false. Best to regularly switch companies because their staff never care.

  • same boat, considering se 16g or huawei p9, virgin offer me 2 months free on plan cost for re-contract.
