Telstra Large Broadband Bundle - $120 Per Month. 1TB Data, Free Aus Calls except 13, OS Calls to Various Countries + Foxtel

620

Telstra are targeting the ethnic market with a special bundle.

It's their $120 large bundle (https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/nbn/nbn-bundles#) but with Foxtel Entertainment pack ($26 per month usually) and International Ultimate ($15 per month) thrown in on top for free.

The bundle is targeted at people with overseas relatives and is in theory sold only in the stores listed in the linked pages - but the guys on the phone can do it too - call 1800 834 273.

You can argue whether the large bundle that includes 1000gb of data and all local/national/mobile calls, Telstra TV and unlimted Telstra Air until 31/3/17 is good value for $120 per month, but throwing in another $41 on top certainly makes it a lot more attractive - particularly if you do make calls to countries included as free calls in the International Ultimate pack…

Included calls:
- Local calls to standard fixed lines
- National Calls to standard fixed lines
- Calls to standard Australian mobiles

International Ultimate Calling Pack
- Unlimited calls to home phones in 35 countries
- Unlimited calls to mobile phones in 17 countries
- Discounted call rates to another 37 countries

Unlimited Telstra Air® until till 31st March 2017

Foxtel Entertainment Package included for 24 months
– over 45 channels including drama, lifestyle, docos, kids, news and more. Offer for new Foxtel from Telstra customers.
$0 Standard Installation (normally $100)
$0 iQ2 (normally $75)

Telstra TV included with 3 months free Netflix, Stan & Presto

  • this is the similar to this

    • Yeah but the OP didn't mention the large bundle and it's Foxtel benefit. The link is the same, just one is for medium and the other large…

For mine the large is a better deal, particularly if you need the 1000gb anyway…

      • So what speed are they offering with the NBN. I didn't see this in the links (although it is sunday morning so i might not be seeing that well)

        • +3

          Most likely 25/5

        • @Agret:
Unfortunately it will be this speed, unless you pay $20 (or $10) per month for speed boost too 100 down..

        • +1

depends on what type of NBN you have. FTTP would be up to 40mbps then optional speed boost to 100mbps

          FTTN will be 25mbps

        • +2

          @ExpressCoffee:
By default Telstra's FTTP is 25/5 unless you ask for the speed boost.

        • +1

          @cashews:

I must've been thinking about cable, thanks.

Still double the base NBN speed of some carriers

  • +2

    Racial!

      Hong Kong
      India
      Malaysia

      Singapore
      South Korea
      Taiwan

    Large Ethnic Bundle

    Wish I had one…

    • +6

You wish you possessed one yourself, or you wish you had one in you?

      • -1

or you wish you had one in you?

        BURN!

    • +2

Invalid reason to neg this deal..

      • True, but the word "ethnic" doesn't really need to go in the title. I don't think it's racist but it's not exactly help in the title either.

The description is fine as is though.

        • Oh poor snowflake are you offended?

    • +8

The title is not meant to offend.

The fact is the bundle has been designed specifically to target a customer segment Telstra have identified.

That segment is people with overseas relatives, often only 1st or 2nd generation Australians.

That is a little lengthy to put in the title. If the mods agree the word "Ethnic" is offensive here they can change it, but I struggle to see how it is offensive.

Do you hold views similar to Cindy Prior ??

    • +1

      Huh? How is this derogatory?

      • +5

It's not. At all. But the left look for sexism/racism in everything. Just ignore the few lunatics.

        • +2

          that's leftist & lunaticist.

And I'm offended on behalf of those who should be offended, even though their too stupid to know they should be offended, or too lazy to be offended, or just don't listen to me when I tell them that it's offensive and they should be offended and I'm offended that they're not offended.

oh and I secretly love Donald, it's the floppy hair

        • +1

          @supabrudda:

Why doesn't he just get a decent haircut? Bloody hell.

Trump's Daughter: 'Dad, you really need a better haircut'

Trump: No I think its OK, I like the style.

Trump's Daughter: No seriously Dad, get a haircut!

Trump: Nah, I reckon it…(gets cut off)

Trump's Daughter: DAD!!! F#$ing seriously, TRUST ME! GET A HAIRCUT!

How had this Convo not happened?

  • +6

Could've called this an international bundle, a world bundle or even a foreign bundle.

Terming this an "ethnic bundle" probably wasn't the brightest move.

    • +1

Even "foreign" bundle sounds dodge. I think "International" bundle would've been the wisest choice :)

      • Just think it could have been worse! (using thesaurus.com and trying a few variations)

        Telstra Hefty Indigenous Heap
        or
        Telstra Whopping Native Wad
        or
        Telstra Humongous Ethnic Mass

But I agree with you, calling it International does have a nice ring to it (pardon the pun) given Optus have World Saver (which by choice of words gives you some idea that its international based and going to save you money or help the environment by recycling your calls.

    • +1

Does someone from an overseas background have an ethnic background?

Is describing a group of such people as "ethnic" offensive if it is not done in a derogatory manner?

If you think it's offensive complain the mods - if they agree they'll remove it. I won't object to that removal.
My intention was not to offend, and any offence taken I apologise for.

My experience with mods here is mixed, so I'll leave it up to them to decide, it really doesn't worry me either way.
I could say some offensive things about some of the mods who I don't particularly like, but I won't. We don't need more offended people tonight.

I would say if the word "ethnic" is offending you here, you must live a life full of offence - and I pity you for that if the offence is real.

You may however make a lot of money by being continually offended, just sue everybody who offends you under Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act - it has made a lot of easily offended people in Australia very rich…

      • -3

You seem to have gobbled up the red meat thrown to you by Cory Bernardi, Eric Abetz and Co. Distract the commoners so they fight amongst themselves and leave the wealthy to their riches!

        • -1

I had never heard of Eric until you wrote down his name. Cory I believe is some politician on a junket in the US at the moment. I don't care for him - to be frank I don't care for 99.99% of politicians of all flavours.

However I do agree with a fair bit of what Paul Zanetti has to say about these things…

        • +1

          "PresidentClinton"

Suffer in your jocks…I bet Wednesday sucked for you.

        • +1

@Sir Casm: Anusol sales are going through the roof at present. Serious butt hurt out there.

      • Should have used foreign extraction…..

    • I haven't yet seen a good reason why there's a problem with that term. If anyone can name a good reason, please do. I would really like to hear it. Australia is an ethnically diverse country! That's not racist at all to me but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I can think of plenty of words I don't like. Should we remove those all too?

I really hope OzBargain doesn't go down the path of this sort of censorship. If it's prejudiced, I support it being banned. If threatening, I support it being banned.

    • +1

yeah being asked to change the word "ethnic" to "international" is a ~serious~ violation of freedom of speech. somebody call Tim Wilson!

(in all seriousness though I had no clue what an 'ethnic bundle' could possibly mean. international is at least not semantically ambiguous.)

  • +2

Woah this is a good deal. We are currently on a $130pm deal with telstra for 1TB internet and intl. calls.

This is $10pm less and has foxtel plus telstra TV. Woah.

Anyone know if its possible for existing customers to move to this? I think our 2yr contract just expired.

We're on cable if that makes any difference.

    • +2

Give them a call. In theory its an NBN only bundle, but the guys on the phone can work wonders - and isn't the cable network being taken over by the NBN Co anyway??

      • +1

Eventually yes it'll go to NBN (That'll be a sad day. I hope the nbn stays away for as long as possible).

But even once the nbn does come, i imagine the same plans will just transition over since its nothing new.

        • Haha I'm in the same boat hoping for NBN to take forever, telstra cable offers fantastic speeds for me and is reliable, something I can see changing when it's integrated with NBN!

        • @bloobat: Dito, Telstra cable is excellent, I fear the NBN will turn it to shit when your sharing with absolutely EVERYONE in your area.

        • @malouphix: Problem with Telstra cable is the upload speed is crap. When your using Dropbox to upload lots of data this is important. I'm looking forward to the nbn hfc cable service for the uploads to be fixed alone.

        • +1

@simmomelb: nbn hfc cable service for the uploads to be fixed alone.

Is that going to happen?? I wasnt aware of any changes to the infrastructure?

        • @simmomelb: I upload GBs just fine on my cable @ 300KB/s it works quite well, but agree can never have enough upload bandwidth.

    • +1

      @ cheesecactus
yes I have done this last month with a speed boost added

    • They offer slower speed.

  • +3

    Thanks hombre.

    • +2

I dont take offence to being called hombre - I actually like it. But be careful, some people might not :)

      • +1

I'm modding you up as long as you're joking ;)

      • +3

What's the fuss? Hombre - man, dude, bloke. Pretty common word. I was thanking you for your find and effort.

  • Oh OK, SBS must be the ethnic TV station, thanks for clearing that up commenters.

  • Also afaik the foxtel is only free for 2 years. So set a reminder to cancel it!

    • Yeah all the freebies unbundle after 2 years.

If you have say a 2 year deal, and 18 months into it a new bundle comes along you like more, Telstra normally let you change to the new bundle as long as you recontract for 12 or 24 months (whatever the new bundle is).

In the last 10 years I've rebundled like that 4 times… Thinking of doing it to get this one too…

      • Oh really? The free calls vanish? Afaik my current plan the intl. calls remain. I dont want to change the plan as its for my parents and they probably wont change it in 2yrs time…..and start being billed for intl. calls.

  • +4

Amongst all this talk of an inappropriate title/product name… you know this was posted by not merely "GreatHunter", but "GreatWhiteHunter" ;)

Personally I have no issue with the name.

  • Wow the PC is unreal…

  • +2

Isn't this just the 1000GB + Foxtel for $99/mth with the international calling pack added? Would've been cheaper $99 + $16 unless I'm missing something?

    • The only difference is that the $99 bundle does not include free local and national calls.

      • Who pays for International calls nowadays? It's called skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp etc etc.

    • Is this one you're talking about:
      https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/hottest-entertainment-b…

Personally I would get that together with a Skype unlimited yearly subscription. Don't have a home phone device for a long time now.

  • +4

Watch the speed, these are all 25MB plans.

    • +2

Just go to store and ask for speedboost thrown in for free. I recently got the $90 international calling pack M plan (see the M plan in the link) and got speedboost thrown in.

      • Just wondering how do you go about bargaining? I will be a new customer signing up to their cable internet soon.

        • I just tell them to throw in for free, otherwise I won't sign up. I also ensure that they add it in their application cover sheet as well, and get a photocopy of it.

They can get it for free but requires approval from store manager. So my guess is whether they have met their target of signing for the month or not.

        • @edisonAU:

I haven't asked for speed boost but have questioned do I need to pay for activation given the house have already got Foxtel and cable currently, got told a no…I suspect asking for speedboost or any other discount would be like pulling someone's teeth.

        • @mini2:

Well you can always ask to pull someone's teeth. The worst thing they can say is no.

        • @edisonAU: It took me a while, but I managed to get free speed boost for the life of the contract.

  • +4

Political correctness has gone too far. There comes a point where enforcing it prevents closing the equality gap. We may not be there yet, but I want to be there one day. Stop with the PC, please.

    • Yup, how do we let friends, family and people like us treat each other in a non-PC manner? Trust. I don't see this movement breaking down any barriers.

  • +2

So according to the OP, cheap rates to OS countries is targeting the "ethnic market" ?? I call Canada a lot. Guess I'm ethnic.

    • Canada eyy?

    • I have family in U.K., USA and Canada. I'm now happy being considered ethnic. :D No more assumed white guy privilege and I get to claim minority status! :D Sounds like a great deal from Telstra.

    • Ethnic Snow Mexican!

    • +5

      Not a neg reason.

  • +1

I walked into a store a week ago and the rep offered me this same deal except for $99.

I told him Optus phone plans were much cheaper and on top of that I get $20 discount on broadband packages. He offered me the same deal as this but at $99, and it didn't require me to get a mobile with Telstra. Telstra's mobile plans still not competitive.

I still didn't take it though because I want to see how MyRepublic pans out.

    • I think a lot of people are waiting to see how it turns out for the early adopters, although I'm sure the speeds will probably get worse when it's given the all-clear and everyone signs up at the same time haha

      • +1

You might be right. We have until Feb to lock in the $59.99 price. They launch in 2 days. Hopefully we can get a guage on it. If it sucks right from the getgo, probably will stick with TPG or continue to shop around.

I managed to get TPG to switch me to NBN without contract or cost.

    • Hi @lostn
Can you remember the name of the rep you spoke to and what store was it. I might try talking to him for the same deal.
So this deal is not offered either on the phone, or another store that is not in the list ?
      Thanks.

  • You will be lucky if your not paying for installation.

  • +2

I have a Telstra bundle and can't understand why they don't have 13 numbers included. They charge 30 cents a call.

My cheapo mobile plan includes unlimited phone calls in Aust including 13 numbers. So if I need to make a 13 call it's on the mobile.

  • Serious question. Why do people still talk internationally over landlines? Majority of the world have better internet than we do, Skype is free, quality is better, uses next to no data . Is this for old people who haven't quite figured out the internet?

    • +4

Seriously "the majority of the world have better internet than we do".

Not sure about you, but most of my friends in Thailand and The Philippines would kill for Internet at home at all - they rely on mobile phone Internet.

You know most people in Asia dont have landlines - not because they dont want one, but because they can't afford one.

Also Skype the software may be free, but the data isn't. And the quality is crap if either parties Internet is crap.
I call rural Thailand a lot so I am speaking from experience, not out of my ass.

      • -2

most people in Asia dont have landlines - not because they dont want one, but because they can't afford one.

Not saying it isn't true… But you're probably stretching it a little bit. Lots of reasonably wealthy countries in Asia, Thailand isn't too bad either.

    • +1

Because it requires both ends to have Skype, which isn't always practical.
Having a grandma overseas, calling customers, calling people with bad/no internet, people without smartphones, and so on.

      • Incorrect. Not if you have a plan of some sort.

I pay like 35$ per year for 300 minutes each month ( never really exceed them) for calling my family on their home line abroad. Need to use the app still on my end but I can dial mobiles and home phone for a cheap price.

Combined with Skype top up cards on Coles and Woolworth it's a good deal.

        • I use WhatsApp, Hangouts, and Skype for calling overseas. Sometimes call quality is excellent and sounds better than a direct call, sometimes it's poor with latency or dropouts. Right now I still find a direct call is more consistent than an ip call, to some countries.

    • +2

We use Facetime, FB Messenger and recently Google Duo to call overseas most of the time. Having said that however, there are times when any of these aren't an option — like calling a business entity overseas. Some people in other countries are also on free data, or where internet is poor or worst, non-existent.

    • +1

My widfe uses it a lot to call her parents in China. They are old and don't use computers etc. So this plan is prefect for them as it is definitely much easier than using Skype.
