Schoolies @ the Sunshine Coast, Should I Stay Away?

Hi OzB,

Looking to head up the Sunshine Coast with the missus this Saturday, probably head over to Mooloolaba and hit the surf.

How does Mooloolaba look on the first weekend of schoolies, is it super crowed on the drive up and while we're looking to be there?

Any insight would be great, thanks!

Schoolies on the sunshine coast is fine. It's pretty quiet and dull. You will see a few groups of 17 year olds with their Schoolies lanyards but it's nothing like Surfers Paradise. For the most part the schoolies are pretty well behaved and they might just have a few parties in their rooms and a bit of drinking. What you see in the news is just the sensationalized extremes. The official schoolies hotels put on extra security guards to keep an eye on the kids and to enforce a noise curfew.

I actually volunteered for red frogs up here last year.

I doubt the Bruce Highway will be any busier than a normal weekend.

Here on the Coast it tends to attract the more subdued and less rowdy schoolies - they always tend to head south to the Gold Coast! I've never noticed it to be much busier round schoolies time :-)

      • I just went for a drive through Mooloolaba and it was as dead as it usually is on a regular friday night. No schoolies to be seen anywhere.

    with your missus???? no

  • You'll be fine at the Sunshine Coast, just don't go to GC for Schoolies.

Here's a short video that could depict what it's like?

    • how very informative
