Just Got NBN. Help with a Router?

Hi guys; disclaimer, i know nothing about the interwebs so please if I don't supply enough information for someone to answer my question, don't destroy me.

I just got NBN last week. Its through TPG and they gave me a router. Huawei HG659 is the model number. I had a really good router previously (TPLink Archer D7) that I had just ozbargained in June this year. TPG are telling me it isn't NBN compatible and I was hoping for some help to explain why, so I can understand before I make a mistake a sell a bloody good router.

I don't know which type of NBN I got, but that the guy who came and installed it looked for a foxtel cable and then now has a funny modem thing attached to it. Hope that helps.

TLDR: Is the TPLink Archer D7 router compatible with my type of NBN?

    FTTN is "NBN"

    • yeh nothing to write home about. Had 5mbps previously download and now its 10. Good but hardly revolutionary

  • Plug the ethernet going into your HG659 into the WAN port of your TP Link. That's the easiest way to check that it works.

    • Tried. Then went into default gateway to resign in; failed at that step

  • TPLink Archer D7 does do nbn, maybe you confused them not supporting the TPLink Archer D7 with the modem not supporting the nbn.

    propably should read http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2335056

  • Can VoIP phone run on the one phone port on the D7 though?

  • I'm pretty sure all routers support the NBN - as you're just routing the connection, not making a connection via a modem like with ADSL - you just might run into speed issues with poorer devices - that said I'm no expert though.

If you end up going for a new router, I was looking something that would be good for a NBN connection back in June and at the time pretty much everyone was recommending the ASUS RT-AC68U.

It might be worth double checking a better device hasn't come along in the meantime though.

I cant give a personal review as I'm still waiting for the NBN to be connected :(

  • It'll work, with the correct configuration. TPG just don't want to support it.

  • If you expect accurate assistance, please take to the time to describe in more detail what was supplied/installed and what is plugged in. "…then now has a funny modem thing attached to it." doesn't help your cause.

Does the Funny Modem Thing (FMT) have any identifying marks such as a..gee… brand name or model number?

Does the cable from the FMT to your router have any identifying mark on it? (eg. CAT5e..CAT6…etc)

The PORT where the cable plugs into at each end? "WAN"…"DSL" etc?

Did the NBN guy really look for the "Foxtel" cable or do you consider all cables generically as "Foxtel"?

Foxtel also provide their service via ADSL so you will receive misleading responses if you refer to Foxtel "Cable" that may instead refer to a different technology called HFC.

    Possibilities are covered here http://www.nbnco.com.au/learn-about-the-nbn/network-technolo…

But just start with at least providing more detail of the Funny Modem Thing.

    • will get back to you late tmrw with more details. thanks for your help so far.

    • The foxtel cable goes directly into the back of the Arris Touchstone Cable Modem. D3.0.

The cable modem then goes into the Wan port at the back of the TpG supplied modem.

Definitely tried the obvious where i put the cable into the Wan port of my D7 router but that didn'5 work. Any ideas?

      • Ok log into the huawei and note down the WAN authentication settings. Sounds like you need to replicate that on the D7. Eg. Pppoe username and password .

Update… set pppoe user and pass…also tag port vlan 2.

  • Log into hg659 with only your feed coming in make no changes other than disabling the Wifi they fight

If it's Fttb you will have a unit called an NTU you need to use this little black box

Plug in your router from LAN 1 on HG659 to Internet or WAN port on router

Your router will need new IP address some will reassign for you others you need to set but it can't be 192.168.1.1 or whatever the default is on the gateway HG659

You might need to connect to them separately change settings in router but should go straight through

Set your SSID and passwords for router and away it should go

If your router picks up the HG659 the settings wizard might kick in and make it really easy and do most of the work for you

If you goose it you can always pin the reset just put all your Login details into notepad so you can cut and paste and remember passwords you need or change
