I find my phone and laptop leave something to be desired in terms of powering my 598s, while my desktop is great - so YMMV depending on what you're connecting it to. They sound great either way, but there is a noticable difference.
Mine is just plugged to the mobo's audio out on the back panel, seems to power it fine.
Might still get myself a Fiio E10k for xmas =D
I've upgraded from creative titanium HD so the sound quality improvement was not very significant. Both has similar DAC spec, and offers similar music tuning. However, the convenience of an external volume control and swappable headphones amp have provided a much better user experience IMO.
I'm not an audiophile but upgrading to an external DAC/amp from inbuilt is noticeable. no more static interference, signal to headphone is much cleaner and consistent. worth an investment I would recommend.
What's a good value amp to pair with?
I have the JDS Lab Element and depending on your headphones I personally only noticed a slight benefit when using a dedicated amp and dac.
My headphones are very easily driven and I used my macbook pro as a source

I noticed that this is the SE (Special Edition) version - what's the difference between this and the non-special version? o.O

This SE is still open. There is a closed version though also. The original was a beige colour. There jury is still out if there is any other differences.
That's the HD598C. HD598 vs HD598SE is just colourway and included cables (original HD598s did not include a 1.2m x 3.5mm cable).

What are these like for gaming?
I use mine with Onkyo DP-X1 DAP plus also for gaming. They deliver amazing sound for each. A lot of listening comes down to personal preference and the type of sound you are looking for. They aren't aimed at gamers like surround sound headphones are but they certainly do the job.
I don't have a 28D card but I do have a Citibank plus card and I heard they don't charge conversion fees either? Can anyone confirm?
The only catch is their exchange rate might be worse than 28D (I think).

I bought the 598C in the recent black friday deals however they haven't arrived yet. I've never owned open cans and I'm wondering what open brings over closed cans?
The 598C are the Closed version.
Yes I know, why buy open over closed? What is the difference in sound?
My reasoning for having both are closed give better noise isolation and less sound leakage. The open have more natural fuller open sound.
Thanks OP ordered one :) I already have an HD600 and love it, but it needs to be paired with an amp and that kills the portability. These (HD 598s) are quite sensitive and are driven by most phones and laptops quite well. Cheers.
Correct, HD598 impedance is even lower than HD280's.
