As mentioned by the OP, if you had just sign up with VirginMobile for the iPhone 3GS on their $35 Rollover cap, you can upgrade to this $39 smart cap which gives you 1.5GB data, unlimited text to anyone in Australia and unlimited Virgin to Virgin. Plus the $160 calls can be used for national & international.
Just call 133323 and ask to speak to the loyalty team for upgrade.

  • Oh crap, kill me now HAHA. I didn't think the $35 cap was enough so I didn't get it!
And great, these come out momentarily after the other one ends.

As for tethering, Virgin uses the Optus network, and I believe Optus charges additional for tethering. :S

    • haha yeah i almost think 35$ isnt enuf
      hmm i found this http://virginmobile.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/495…
its free, but i cant it says contact optus, yes i have done the reboot but still the same

    • Optus charges a $10 fee per month for tethering so I suppose this applies to Virgin as well as Virgin uses the Optus Network.

        • Yup, I got the $35 deal the other day and setting up tethering is simply a matter of turning it on on the phone, and plugging it into my Win7 computer.

That was all I needed to do.

I'll definitely be upgrading to the smart $39 plan (I rang up to do it but they advised me to wait for the start of the next billing period).

  • charging for tethering? that sounds iStupid. I've been tethering phones for nearly 10 years and its never cost me an extra access fee, only my data (or data call, back in the GSM days)

    • +2

yeah, but this is iTethering, its magical.

  • i'm on Virgin, they don't charge for tethering.

you just have to turn on the switch in the iPhone settings. then start itunes on your laptop/computer. then plug in your iphone to your laptop/computer

and if there is a blue bar at the top of your iphone saying "tethering" or something like that, then you should have an internet connection.

  • if you want to tether your iphone OS4 http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1473735

  • With Virgin, are the calls made when made outside Australia (ie. overseas) included in the cap?

    • please see firsf post yes incl

      • First post only mentions making international calls. I'm talking about calling when overseas. It's different.

        • That would be roaming wouldn't it? Highly doubt it. I've never seen roaming expenses included in cap credit.

        • No. I always use my phone when travelling and that cost extra. (even for receiving calls, pretty stiff too)

    • When Roaming (ie calling from overseas to any destination), calls/SMS/data are extra on top of your cap.
International calls (ie calling from Australia to overseas) are included in the cap and for many destinations are surprisingly reasonable.

  • Awesome, I've just signed up the $35 plan! Now I don't have to pay for my mobile internet when using my laptop outdoor. It would be nice if the tethering can work with iPad, so it can connect to internet without it's own 3G connection.
    Thanks for posting!

  • wow this is very very good value.
I wonder if it's the things to come for Optus as well (please say yes :()

  • +2

Good deal for those who have good Optus reception. If you enjoy better coverage and faster 3G speeds, do yourself a favour and go with Telstra…you won't regret it.

    • My bank balance will regret it

      • +1

        Good point…but they're getting more competitive…

        $49 Cap with 16GB iPhone 3GS for $0
        -$400 calls/txt
        -200MB data

        • thats not bad at all actually. only $14 more per month and you get far more call pack, eventho less data pack.

        • Where do you get this?

This is the Telstra iPhone Plans & Pricing page, and this is the cheapest option:

$60 Cap with 16GB iPhone 3GS for $149 up front
          -$50 calls/txt
          -$10 data

            • @ShortyX: Whoa! Nice!

Thanks mate, I thought they were all still at those ludicrous prices I linked. Hell, it's almost making me regret the $735 over 24 months I'm paying on the Virgin plan (versus $1176 on the Telstra plan). Almost. I reckon the $440 saving is worth the Optus network - I've already tested it in all the areas I will require it working and have been happy.

But I certainly know a few people who'll benefit from that. Thanks!

Does Telstra have easy tethering like Virgin?

              • @[Deactivated]: I'm pretty sure they have easy tethering and don't charge extra.

                • @ShortyX: telstra are fantastic despite higher prices and i'd choose them any day over optarse or the godawful 3

  • +1

Can anyone see where to look up the actual call rates? I'm sure $50 a month for the $29 plan sounds good but if they charge $1 per 30sec, it's not so.

    • +1

If it's the same as the other $35 Rollover Cap Plus, then it's

      99c/min + 40c connection (billed per minute!)

  • unlimited text to anyone in Australia

    So no international? :(

    • Don't you think that would be a little bit TOO good? Haha but if only!

  • I was SO close to getting a Samsung Galaxy S on the Optus "social" plan for $59 a month… all I really use my phone for is SMS (and the very rare MMS), so even that $29 cap would be awesome… and 1Gb of data would still let me access facebook etc to send quick messages.

But they only have two phones for that plan?

  • Shame that they just nerfed their prepaid plans.

  • Thanks, just upgraded from my plan, extra $4 per month with 1gb extra of data and unlimited sms, great deal.

  • oh btw before i upgrade, is it still free virgin to virgin calls?

    • Yes.

  • So, seriously, if i call on 133323, i can upgrade my just bought iphone on the $35 plan (300mb of data) to 1.5 GB of data for an extra $4 a month?

    Thats fantastic.

as i saidmany ppl in whirpool forum and 1 friend over here able to upg to 39$
i havent try becoz i got that 3 free month of 1GB data when im signing up last week so im thinking fo wait another 2 months then will upgrade
but maybe i shiuld do it now just incase virgin cgange their mind n restric the upgrade

      • Ditto. I've decided to wait until the 1GB bonus has run out too.

        • Just remember to call Virgin to cancel your "bonus gig" before the 3 months is up otherwise they automatically start charging you for it (and it is way more than $4/month !). They fail to mention that when the friendly sales staff offer it to you on signup :)

          • @[Deactivated]: Actually they did mention that.

      • It's been standard Virgin policy for years to allow plan changes. It's unlikely they'll revoke that policy, especially since they're getting extra cash from you…
I've even successfully "downgraded" my plan!
I bought a Nokia 6220 free on the $30Cap when the phone was launched, 12 months later, they released the $29 Cap with 20Mb data included… I dropped my monthly spend (albeit by only $1) and the contract did not renew.

  • I hate virgin, there are some times i dont get enough priority on the optus network even with FULL bars. Especially in The Valley (QLD) very upsetting.

im on the old $59 iphone 3gs 32GB plan and i currently get $320 calls and 300mb data. i just rang up loyalty team and they to let me jump on the new $59 plan where i get $380 worth of calls and now 2.5GB of data and my credit rolls over! WIN!

  • Awesome deal! Thankyou thankyou thankyou! Am submitting this comment on my iPhone that's now on $39 plan. Lu-ving it!

    Nige

  • congrat to all of you hahaha.. hopefully the 3G network can handle all this new virgin customer and not slowing the speed down ! lol
