How should I destroy this before I chuck it out to ensure data not retrievable?

Generally remove drive from casing and drill HDD platters or for SSD the storage chips.
That should make it impossible or at least highly coast ineffective to recover data unless you are hiding data from ASIO etc.

  Smashing it up a bit with a hammer makes it a tens of thousands of dollars job to try and get anything restored.

http://www.dban.org/ it first before you smash the platters/ssd chips as per above :)

  This will be sufficient. But depending on the size of the storage, can take hours and hours. And less fun.
  
  If u want fun… Mig welder.. but be careful theres some chance it can shatter in your face.

I started with a hammer on a concrete floor and it didn't budge. Perhaps I'll drive over it and see if I can get to the innards.

Ok, driving over it a few times takes the top off, tough little bugger. Is it the little round bit in the centre I need to 'drill'?
