  • Why would I get a $100 torch when I can get a $10 torch. Not trying to troll, just wondering what advantages this one has.

    • +1

      reliability mainly.
for normal use a $10 is ok.
if you want something that will last you need to spend $50 up

It's up to you. Why drive a nice car when you can drive a bomb? The sky's the limit on these types of things.

Seriously though, you could always buy the $60 Fenix for $30…

Also, I reckon you'd be glad if your search and rescue crew are not using $10 torches, or if the police weren't just using $10 specials to look for crooks in the backyard, or for little Johnnie who fell into the drain. :)

Also LED torches give you a lot more light for a lot longer on the same set of batteries.

      • i got a nice LED torch from K-mart a few weeks back for only $5… It has 6 or 7 LED's… Very bright and uses 2 AA batteries…

        • The CREE LED emitters in these fenix torches are not comparable to the low powered 9 LED specials that run on aa or aaa's. The difference in flood and throw is night and day so to speak.

          • @BartholemewH: but so is the price… it depends what you need it for and how frequent you'll be using it…

"Why drive a nice car when you can drive a bomb?"
Reliability. I found out the hard way that if you drive a bomb that you're probably going to pay a lot in repairs. But a car is a very different item than a torch.

"I reckon you’d be glad if your search and rescue crew are not using $10 torches"
TBH, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Elcheapoinoz gave a well thought out constructed response. You are just giving examples that seem to avoid answering my question.

"Also LED torches give you a lot more light for a lot longer on the same set of batteries."
Apart from this your post was fairly useless.

        • Not going to get into a war on this, but will try to address your questions.

Light output - the $100 torch will (hopefully) have a lot better quality LEDs than a K-Mart LED. Even amongst >$50 torches there is a difference between regulated and non-regulated LEDs and some other factors.

The example of quality/price is valid, even though a torch is different from a car.

You WILL be able to tell the difference if your search and rescue crew are using $10 torches. For some examples of comparisons, do a YouTube search for Fenix FD40 and have a look at some of tests they show, you'd be hard pressed to see a $10 torch giving that much light output.

        • I've gone through my fair share of $10 LED torches and various LED bulbs for different applications. You do get what you pay for. My concern is really in the build quality.

I think the point of the above examples is that you want a torch that will be guaranteed to work if there are serious consequences at stake. If you were lost in the mountains, would you want the search and rescue crew relying on $10 torches that would be likely to fail at random times, and thus be hindered in their search for you?

    • They're worth considering if all the torches you've owned over the years have disappointed, you're tired of all the cheapies and want to bet on a sure thing. Fenix torches have weathered the extensive scrutiny from torch enthusiasts and come out looking pretty good.

But lots of people are happy with their supermarket or DealExtreme torch, it's just a bit more of a gamble if your expectations are high.

  • depends on which model, you can get Fenix lights cheaper @ http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.920

I got a TK10 from them a few months ago. Only thing is it took them 2 months to get it to me!

    • Heh, I think we've all been there with the slow deliveries on specials. :)

An update from me - sent in a non-working 2C Maglite on 8/7/2010 registered. Australia Post tracking indicates it arrived this morning at 6am. LE Gear has already confirmed they shipped out the Fenix TK40 today.

I've purchased things from LE Gear before and they are very good with customer service and order fulfilment.

  • can they be turned into light sabers?

    • The diffuser tips make them look a bit like a light saber. But unfortunately they've a stronger resemblance to something else you probably don't want your kids toying with :)

    They're TORCHES, not FLASHLIGHTS! :o

    • Heh, OK, I've edited it for us non North Americans. :)

  • Btw I love my $30 LED Maglight that was on special from Coles a few months back =)

  • That TK40 for $137 delivered is pretty tempting.

    • And think of all the great laughs you could get by yelling "TK40 why aren't you at your post?" when you're looking for it!

I own 3 Fenix torches and they're all great. The P1 is best, takes a lithium CR123A and small enough to carry on a keychain. It's bright enough for occasions such as checking out what's around in a dark car park, in the bushes or something. When shone into eyes it will blind night-adjusted eyes momentarily. It's nicknamed the Pocket Rocket :)

My L2P and L1P are both great too, runs on 2 and 1 AA respectively, has a really nice clicker which when depressed half way, turns the torch off until you release, good for momentarily turning it off without actually clicking it off. Both are also pretty bright.

  • Thanks eddomak, finally I've found a good use for the $3 Maglite Solitaire from that Alwaysonsale offer 3 months ago - tradebait!

  • can you send in a torch that doesn't work ?

    • never mind, it's on the website, it doesn't have to be working…

  • What are they trying to do. They may as well reduce the price by 50% and taking away the hassle of sending an invaluable torch to them.

    • only certain brands qualify for the rebate…

  • Bought Torch/Flashlight with CREE LED (runs with 3 AAAs) on Ebay, $15 including shipping cost. I also got MagLite 4D LED. CREE LED far BETTER than MagLite 4D LED.

Awesome job eddomak thanks to you I'm going to get another Fenix flashlight at half price. I've got the ld20 and it seriously is the Mercedes of torches. But the tk40 with $127 off is to good an offer to pass up. And the tip about the solitaire …. Priceless. As a first time on this website it's great to benefit straight away with this deal. No doubt I will be coming back here regularly!

If you haven't seen a Fenix torch in action then it's hard to comprehend.

    • I noticed that LE Gear sells the Solitaire at $9.50, but am not sure if you could order the Solitaire from them, and ask them to then not deliver it and consider it a trade in? THAT would be a classic - saves you even posting it, and I assume they would make a little bit of profit on the Solitaire as well. :)

  • I've bought about 8 torches on eBay now, for about $1 each (+ $1 shipping heh). I've also bought perhaps 10 Fenix's, some upwards of $100. Of course, the quality doesn't compare… but to be honest, the $2 eBay ones are seriously impressive for the cost - if you want an around-the-house kind of torch, buy a $2 eBay "3W AA" torch - not the stupid ones with heaps of LED's.

Or of course, if you're insane like me, then you just have to buy the top-of-the-range Fenix gear… but really, for your average kind of person who doesn't hang out on the candlepower forums and dream of their newest "every-day-carry", I can recommend the really cheap single cell AA aluminium "3W" eBay ones. (The 2xAA ones don't fit 2 AA batteries properly… yay for Chinese quality control… and I got one which was plastic and seriously bad… but the rest have been good)

  • Thanks for the tip, for $2 you can't go wrong!

  • Finally a mainland Chinese company that makes top quality stuff:
