Interim Receipt for Full Drivers Licence

I have an interim receipt as a result of getting my full licence. It's a flimsy piece of paper and I'm scared of losing it. It's quite large as well so stuffing it in the wallet is out of the question. I'm wondering if it's still valid if it's photocopied or scanned. If I lose it, I could pop by the RMS again to pick up another one free but it's quite a hassle now since the local one permanently closed a few years ago.

Can't find anything on the RMS website apart from this:

What happens if I lose my receipt before my printed licence photocard arrives?
You can attend any registry or service centre and have another receipt printed. After validating your identity they will issue you with another receipt. There is no fee for a replacement receipt.

Can I drive or ride without a licence card?
When you apply for or renew your licence, you will be given a paper driver licence receipt. This receipt will act as proof of licence status for one month or until your new photo licence arrives (whichever is first).

I'm afraid of forgetting to bring it or losing it then getting pulled over by the coppas for whatever reason. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

  • Put in glove box?

When I got fined for not carrying licence, it was only $50. So not a big deal, but that was several years ago, and may cost you more now!

    Fold it

Technically you need the original, not a copy.

As Gofast said, put it in your glovebox. If you need it on you as proof of age or something I folded mine to buggery (down to credit card size) and stuffed it into my minimalist wallet and it survived just fine.

It'll only take a week or so to get your new card in the mail. It'll last until then.

Knowing Australia Post's record and it being Christmas time, I'd say you won't have it before the New Year. I would just shove the receipt in the glove box. If you need ID for a bar / club between now and New Years make a photo copy of your passport, and bring your old license along with a secondary ID with your name on it (student card). I've never understood why they can't just instantly create a new drivers license and hand it to you.

Not only that but they punch a hole through your old license/learners. (At least they do in VIC) making (some) bouncers reject you from bars and clubs.

You should also photocopy it and scan it onto your phone so if you should loose it you can pull it up.

      • They said it might take longer than the usual 2 weeks because of the Christmas Holidays. I'd rather have it on the phone or another hard copy in case but not sure if it's valid. I still have my P2 licence and it won't be an issue getting into bars, just that if I do have to get behind the wheel and I forget it one day, I'm screwed if I do get pulled over. Don't want to keep it in the glove box as I don't use the car all that often.

EDIT: my P2 is unpunched - the RMS guy just handed it back to me

  • OP must have never received a receipt before and had to put it in his wallet?

    • We're talking about an A5 piece of paper, not one that the size of a woolies or coles docket. My wallets pretty small and it's stuffed as it is. Can't really fit anything else without removing something important.

If u worry about that much, then u should get a new wallet, mine fits in without problem.

        • I appreciate a good bargain, but have yet to see one on this website for the right price and the right quality.

        • @fossilfuel: my current one Zelda theme cost $15 from EBgames, the last one cost 10 yuan/$2AUD from china which last me 11 yrs, if u want to shrink the size of ur wallet, try cardless cash /scan ur membership card.

Isn't your drivers license (this) kinda more important or just as important as your bank cards/other stuff?
Just keep folding it or put it in your glove box.

  • so, how many different cars are you going to be driving?

Is it that difficult to exercise some common sense in this situation? I'm not sure what suggestions you're trying to get as there's only so many ways you can carry a piece of paper (e.g. in your wallet, in your pocket, in your glovebox, in your phone case, stuck to your forehead…etc.). You're 22+, you can drive a car and you seem pretty intelligent yet you can't figure out how to carry a piece of paper?

    • Exactly this^!

Yes, it's not hard to figure out how to carry it, I'm well aware of that. It seems like most people missed the question so I will repeat it so people don't get sidetracked into suggesting how I should carry it.

I'm wondering if it's still valid if it's photocopied or scanned.

Can't find anything on the website. the-mal said that it has to be original. knick007 said it I should scan/photocopy it but did not mention if it is valid.

It is 100% not valid. It's a certified document and must be the original.

Otherwise you could photocopy 100s of them and hand them out for everyone to use. Just the same as a photocopy of your license won't suffice.

The RMS will replace it if it's lost/damaged and they'll keep a record of the replacement date/time.

Only the original certified copy is valid as your drivers license. The RMS and/or the cops will both confirm this.

Here's from the RMS website in terms of proving your identity:

Important: In all cases, your identity documents must be originals. Copies and certified copies are not acceptable.

This is the same when dealing with any official identify document in any official capacity.

        • Sweet, that's all I needed to know. Thanks.

  • I'm interimming:)
