Xbox One External Hard Drive Issues

tldr; any suggestions on external drives that works well with your xbox one s?

Detail

I bought a 3TB Seagate drive for my Xbox One S jumping on a bargain. It turned out to be a disaster. Games installed on that drive lags whenever there is a Cut scene or new map loading. Now, I run them from internal disc and the experience is smooth. Thus, I wonder if this is an issue with the seagate disc or my xbox.

A kind ozbargainer suggested using a USB3Y cable, but it was no use.

A quora user suggested buying a 7200RPM disc. I checked with Microsoft, they told the Seagate disk specs are fine for Xbox. They suggested trying with another external drive(Unfortunately, I don't have one).

However, I ran Speed test on the disk (using Black Magic Speed Test app) and the result is 122MB/s read speed. I read that Ideal USB 3 reading speed is 500GB/s. Is seagate one too slow? I checked few Youtube videos, and they range between 100MB/s and 200MB/s

Anyway, I am going to return the disk (Glad I kept the box and docs) and get a WD one. But, not too sure which one I should go for. Any, suggestions from Xbox Users are welcome.

And also, if a fellow ozbargainer happens to have the same Seagate disk connected to his/her Xbox one S, I would like to hear his/her experience too.

Thank you.

  • Running the speed test on the disk is one thing.
The only way you can eliminate external disk problem is if you have another HDD and see whether it lags on that one as well.
122MB/s read speed sounds OK to me - there is nothing wrong with your HDD according to the speed test.

I am more interested in the source where you found a USB3.0 HDD reading speed is supposed to be 500GB/s.
Please don't confuse the capability of the USB3.0 technology and a USB3.0 HDD.
    The maximum speed of USB3.0 technology is 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s).

Have you tried power cycling your Xbox?
    Try this and this
The first one hopefully will fix your issue.

      Hmm..

Extremely Sorry, I must have confused with that 5Gb/s.

Have you tried power cycling your Xbox?

I tried that and reformatting the drive as well.

Thank you for your input. Appreciate your time. I am going to try finding another drive and then head to MS Store Sydney.

You can't rely on speed test alone - there's so many factors that could actually cause this.
My last failing HDD's speed test reading was random as well. One day it is OK, another not.
If I were you, I'd return the 3TB to OW citing faulty drive.
I'd either get the Seagate 2TB or another drive but definitely not the Seagate 3TB.
I personally hold a grudge against any 3TB drive.

        • Thats what I have decided. Swap to a 2TB one. Thank you very much.

Just an Update: I swapped it for a 2TB WD Elements. Works really well. No Glitches, nothing.

  • Hi I bought the same drive and it works with no issues;

    Doom
    Forza Horizon 3
    Watch Dogs 2

All installed externally - no lag
    Have you tried re-formatting?

    • Maybe it is just my Drive. Because I just took it Microsoft Store, and the Cutscene/Map loading was Jittering on one of their Demo Box as well.
I tried Ori & the Blind Forest and Fallout 4.
Actually, the gameplay is fine as long as there are no new Cutscenes or new Map.

      Have you tried re-formatting?

      Yes. 2 Times

Thank you for your reply though.

      • I have the same drive too, no problems for me either. Maybe you got a dud.

  • I have the same 3TB drive too, the audio/video it will stutter during cut scenes for 1-2 secs every 5-10 secs. However, there's no issues during actual game play.

It's only stutter in cut scene. For those who don't have any issues, can you please confirm if you have any issues during cut scenes?

  • I wonder if this has something to do with the hdd powering down and having to spin back up again. I know i use to have this issue on my pc with Seagate externals but you could change this with software downloaded from Seagate
