[Brisbane] Mattress shopping

hello there folks,

I'm on the look out for a mattress. A good quality comfortable queen size mattress. Being an ozbargainer, I'm looking for a good deal !

I know that I need to go "instore" to try out mattresses and see which types I like… but does anyone have any tips? what should I look for, and what should I avoid ? Also how do I ensure that I get good value for money?

thanks !

  • yeah.. kinda dodgy but it worked for me:

Go to Ikea down at slacks creek.. go to the 'as is' section.. buy a matress from there.
they aren't allowed to sell used mattresses.. these are just factory scuffed.
    (that's what they said anyway)

They usually have one queen size there.. and i saw four different ones over 3 weeks.

They usually are 50% off and have no warranty.

my $800 mattress cost $400 and is totally sweet a year later.
i've slept on $4000 beds and this compares in awesomeness.

it was about $25 to deliver it.

i recommend you go upstairs and try the floor model out for 10mins with your shoes off.. they also have a chart there which recommends firmness based on your height/weight/needs etc.. good idea to stick to something that really works for you rather than getting the first bargain there. there'll always be another one the next week and it may be in better condition.

last time i was there.. there was a cheap latex mattress there 50% off.

(have fun trying to get to the 'as is' section.. you're supposed to walk through the entire bloody store to get to it)

  • hmm. Sounds like a plan. I might give that a go…

anyone else have any other suggestions for purchasing?

    cheers !

  • there is a mattress warehouse place somewhere near brown plains try google it

  • Tip.. Don't touch sealy! I got one about a year ago (a pillowtop queen @$1200) and it is very overpriced for what it is.
For another house we got a "A H Beard" for about half the price of the sealy and it is the best i have ever slept on.
While you are looking for a cheap matteress dont forget you want something that will last and most important, comfortable to sleep on. A 5 second lay on them in the shop is no guide. Some matteresses now a days are rubbish.

  • Thanks mate. Will keep an eye out for "A H Beard".

With a name like that I could probably look him up in the whitepages and buy a mattress direct from him, might save me a few $$$.
