So I only pay base level of flight cost - absolutely no more. My student days taught me well.

Years of experience, travelling most of year, most years, since 2005. Started with 25kg+ & got tired of lugging, storing, & checking on it.

7-10kg is ideal. (I've even taken a tent & camping gear as carry on to Japan a few times.) Large pockets (for 7" tablet etc) are an advantage & wearing more than 1 layer of clothes & taking excess off as soon as possible helps. My day pack with clothes and essentials not being worn weighs in at 3kg - the extra 4kg is optional.

But not everyone likes the challenge😯
Males usually have less problem lightening the load, so I'm told by women.

Lots online about travelling light. I take 3 of most types of clothes (only 1 set in pack), a pair of shoes on & lighter pair in pack - a major contributor towards weight, sample tube of toothpaste with brush & razor, microfiber face towel as body towel (that's all that's needed to dry you), etc. Warm clothes are bigger & heavier for packing - choose well (bought a $99 down jacket on sale - very light, warm, packs small).

The quick exit from the airport is a bonus. Downside - clothes washing needs to be done regularly, so choose quick drying fabrics.

Fashion & travelling light don't usually coexist. Also bigger luggage is handy for bringing goodies home. So pack for your lifestyle. Enjoy your trip😯

@Infidel: Yep, males care a lot less about fashion, having options, accessories, wearing clean clothes all the time and looking made up as much as possible :) They can definitely afford to travel lighter!

          @lainey13:
True but ladies can do it too. Have done 2 weeks Japan with 7kg carry on.

Trick is to wear old clothes & shoes which you can easily part with and replace with the nice & the new you buy over there.

Bring minimal makeup & use multipurpose, travel sized skincare - great opportunity to use up any samples you've collected.

I've got some old contact lens cases and they are perfect for storing face creams and foundation for a short trip.

And of course, roll up your clothes in your luggage for more room (and less creasing) and layer up on your flight back.

Oh and summer is obviously easier than winter if you wish to travel light.

  • Just wonder where to get the best rate for Japanese yen?

    • +1

ATMs at Narita when you arrive

    • +2

Check out the advice on free & fee free CC for travel on OzBargain. These offer Visa/Mastercard rates which are about as good as you can get.

Citibank Visa Plus debit card is great for free cash at ATMs.

28 degrees MasterCard has been changing its conditions, but I've travelled with it for over a decade.

      And few other cards

Ordinary CC & travel money cards will cost a lot in fees &/or exchange rates. Exchange booths are not worth considering, but got great rates in Tokyo for my surplus us$ one trip.

Note: most ATMs won't work with our cards in Japan. This hopefully will be fixed heading towards 2020 Olympics.

Use these for free easy withdrawals:
» 7-Eleven or other convenience stores advertising free withdrawals for foreigners. These stores are hard to find where few Foreigners frequent.
» JP (Japan Post office) ATM are everywhere especially post offices (check hours of opening) - best choice away from major cities.
» Citibank (& JP) ATMs at airports on arrival & some CBD locations in major cities .

Japan is one of the countries that operate on cash - so make sure you have some.

Difficulty accessing free WiFi is the other issue that surprises travelers.

    • KVB kunlun is the best place to exchange! there's one in sydney and i think other cities too.

  • Two flights - 15 hrs to Narita including Transit in Gold Coast for 3hrs 15mins is a special kind of hell that Jetstar are masters of.
At $1048 return in Sept school holidays, the fare hasn't changed much in 10 years, other than you used to get Qantas or JAL service, you're now relegated to the jetstar nickel and dime squeeze.

Infidel has some good comments in the last thread.

    • +4

      Did I😀
That's what I like about OzBargain - lots of (usually) useful comments from people from a wide variety of expertise.

My usual advice to travellers in Japan is take a long hot soak at an Onsen ♨(naturally heated spa) or the city version - the Sento. Simply wonderful. It's a major part of the culture & a unique experience 🛀

      • Yep. I should mention (like on AFF), you can book Business (or Business Max) there, and still get the $0 free flight back in economy

        • +1

          A good option for some.
I'm far too frugal. I'd rather stay longer or spend the money there.

Besides I sleep through most long distance travel & have been getting free movies & sometimes meals on Jetstar flights😯

The way I get good cheap economy seats: Don't book a seat, arrive near end of check-in time… Have been allocated seat / row to my self or better seat if plane is not full - about 95% of time. Have met other travellers using this strategy.

        • +1

Rather fly there in economy and fly back in biz :)

        • @lainey13:
Had too many long journeys years ago with chickens or goats perched on knees in broken down buses or trains - I recreate those days flying economy😀

        • @lainey13:

Look into lifemiles, Alaska miles or AAdvantage points, using promos.

  • Does the sale completely skip the July period? I was hoping to go during uni break

  • Koriyama Station for the Aizu and South Aizu Ski Pass, is included in the JR East (Nagano / Niigata area) rail pass.

    17000-18000 JPY (~200 AUD) for a Flexible five-day (out of 14) pass.

There is a cheaper 3-day JR Tokyo Wide Pass for around $100, but it only really covers Mt Fuji and Yuzawa / GALA Yuzawa.

Other options include the standard 7-day JR pass for around $350 or the 14-day pass for around $550.

  • just booked last week $200 return tickets to gold coast, now this shows up, looks like ill make my mid year holiday a trip to japan, cheers op & jetstar!

  • Can someone tell me how to get the Gold Coast to Tokyo fare for $278. Can't seem to find it. Thanks.

So maybe 3 weeks ago I decided that I'm sick of waiting around for my next overseas trip to happen and am going to do something cheap and accessible within the next 3 months. Have been looking at the usual Fiji/Vanuatu/SE Asia/New Zealand and then this deal pops up. Needless to say me and the mrs are off to Tokyo in April for the first time. Thanks TA!

  • Damn I am about to start my new role with 6 months probation.

    • I'm currently in mine. My boss is pretty chill, plus septermber-november is a while away! go for it!

  • No Perth :(

  • +1

I paid 1.3k, got the extra 533 for 20kg checked and meals for both my partner and I.
While I could have done it without the extra costs for $750, its a 14 hour flight and I'd rather not starve to death.

    Super potato here I come.

  • But why are there no flights ex Adelaide :(
    There normally is..

  • are there ever any sale fares in December? Or do they not have them cos of the popularity?

    • I managed to get about $450 return Dec 2016 so they do happen =)

    • Yep, they do happen! Good thing is that they don't celebrate Christmas like Western countries do, so to them it's business as usual and flights to Japan won't be crazy (compared to U.S - horrible experience lol) during the holiday season.

    • Early Dec does have cheap flights

  • If StudentFlights are selling these flights as well, the travel periods are actually: 28 Apr 2017 - 11 Jun 2017 / 08 Aug 2017 - 22 Sep 2017 / 05 Oct 2017 - 30 Nov 2017

Not the 'between 23 March and 30 November 2017' mentioned on the Jetstar site.

Yay! 375 return for my birthday in June 😁

  • Damn with the removal of the direct flight all the Jetstar to Japan flights have horrible timings and take ages! (I try not to fly before 9) will have to wait for full service carrier sale.

    • I know, a 6am flight is brutal but.. able to sleep on the plane so no problem.

  • +1

$861 for three people return from the GC (minus luggage, but we'll travel light), glorious.

  • Does anyone know why the "free" return flights have a charge? I'm seeing $65 or $75 for the return fare. Is this for taxes?

    • maybe allocation exhausted for the date you want to fly home?

      • Yeah, could be, but most of the dates around when I'm looking the return flight is between $300-$400, so it seems like I'm seeing the special. This is Sydney-Narita-Sydney btw.

Sick of the indirect 14+ hours flight… Qantas/ANA/JAL please response!

How is Jetstar for everyone who have been to Japan?

Just came back over Xmas to Japan after 3 weeks holiday. Our flight Jetstar (booked using frequent flyers) from Brisbane - Cairns - Narita got cancelled due to mechanical issues. We got upgraded to Qantas direct from Brisbane to Narita though.

Then our return flight from Narita to Brisbane also got delayed and then cancelled at 11 pm. They did good though putting us up to an airport hotel with breakfast and upgraded us to a Qantas flight the next night. However, I had to really rush to get in to work so it was a bit unsatisfactory.

But 100% cancellation rate wasn't too good. My wife will only let us fly Qantas from now.

Searching showed cancellation rate to be 2.6%. Any other Jetstar experiences worse than ours?

    • Hi there, same happened to us, our flight from Osaka - Cairns - Melbourne cancelled 12 hours before the flight and we choose to fly Osaka - Narita - Melbourne. Reached Melbourne midnight (also delayed for 2-3 hours), only option to go home midnight was taxi. Very inconvenient. But the Jetstar Japan staff very polite, very good. But 14hours+ flight was a bit tiring.

Met another couple from Melb, also 100% cancellation. Both their flights from Melb- Cairns-Osaka and return Osaka-Cairns-Melb cancelled. They had to choose another route.

So make sure you have time allowance (ie no need to rush back to work on return) if you do take Jetstar. It was a good flight apart from the cancellation/delay.

    • I've only done Jetstar to Japan and they were fine.
No issues with timings or cancellations, friendly staff, short flight (9 hrs from Brissy to Narita).
      I'd do it again.

      • Won't be true. You can't fly direct from BNE to NRT by Jetstar. You go through Cairns and have to pick-up your luggage there and re-check for next flight there. Have to be at BNE early to board 7am flight to Cairns, and eventually be at NRT at 7pm

        • Ah my bad, I meant Gold Coast.
          I can't edit my comment now :\

    • Never had any issues with flying Jetstar to Japan over the last 9 years from Gold Coast/Cairns/Melbourne. The only issue that I have occured (if you want to call it that) was that I was the last person to check-in to my flight in Tokyo, the flight was oversold so they bumped me to business (starclass back then).

    • Both times I've used Jetstar to fly internationally, my return trip got delayed by 1 day. From Phuket and Narita!

  • keep in mind the $400 return ticket doesnt include all the extra's, like check in baggage, seat selection etc

the checked in baggage can add $200 easily

but still, even $700 return is pretty good :)

  • Thank you TA!!!!!!!!!

  • Are all the free return flights gone? I searched for the return leg in May and June and nothing came up $0. Lowest was a return flight for like $125.

  • +1

So annoying that the direct route Melbourne to Tokyo Narita is now taken over by Qantas…. so no more cheapo tickets… sigh

  • How often do they have big sales to Japan like this? Looks like the dates that I want are gone :(

    • I just went for it. First time every going there. Good reason to go. The tickets I found were during the typhoon season… so… I guess it'll make the trip interesting? Maybe?

      • I booked my flights to Japan with China southern for this April it was $680. Don't mind going again if the prices are good haha. Only thing i don't like is that Jetstar only flies to Narita. And good luck with the typhoon season haha.

  • Is this sold out?
"no deals today" in the section below in the page this deal is linked to

  • Can anyone explain how this works?

So I can buy a ticket on Jetstar to Japan from Cairns for $249?

    That seems insanely cheap!

    • And find a return fare showing free in same purchase. Flew $249 return to Tokyo late 2014.
$278 return from Gold Coast is amazing deal (I paid $349 for same flight in September deal).

  • Got in on this one late. Paid about $650 for a Tokyo return trip… I take it that's better than usual?

All the good dates were already taken. :(

    • Same here, I was waiting for approval for annual leave and the price skyrocketed in that time. That said, it's still cheaper than the ~$1000 I paid around 2 years ago for the same flights.

      • I could buy a Nintendo Switch with the money I saved. That's what I tell myself whenever I look at my bank account.

  • I would like to go when its a little cooler. Whens the best time to see the Cherry Blossums. How much is business class usually?
