Sega Megadrive Clone Console Includes 15 Games @ $49 KMART
cloudstrife23 on 27/07/2010 - 21:42 (www.kmart.com.au)

I was flicking through the latest Kmart catalogue and saw this - a $49 megadrive console (p 5.). Wooo!!! Includes 15 games and the ability to play all megadrive / genesis console games ie its region free!!!!!

Edit:

Games included:

Sonic & Knuckles, Golden Axe, Alex Kidd, Alien Storm, Altered Beast, Arrow Flash, Columns, CrackDown, Decap Attack, Eswat, Flicky, Gain Ground, Bonanza Bros and Fatal Labyrinth. [Thanks for the link zombiecroft and greenguava]

Looks kinda lame when compared to the original console, but for $49 its good to relive those old memories or to give your kids a videogame history lesson. Catridges pretty easy to find off ebay. I still have the original console and my kids love playing it. Games were much simpler back then.

Goes on sale this Thursday - 29 July

NB: Been reading some of the reviews and it seems there are compatibility problems with original Sega Genesis games. Not many comments about PAL region Sega Megadrive games though so not sure how they would work.

How much does it cost for 800 WII points?

Daniel15 on 29/07/2010 - 12:54 ¶

Even better value would be to get a Wii, install the Homebrew channel, install a Sega Mega Drive emulator, and download ROMs for it. I’ve got a full Sega romset on an SD card :D

Some more info here, including likely game list: http://www.blazeeurope.com/sega/cartridge-console-with-15-se...

Also a review of the unit here: http://www.aeropause.com/2008/07/review-atgames-sega-megadri...

Seems kinda cool (perhaps because I used to own a Mega Drive :P), though the review does suggest that there may be some issues with playing games from original cartridges.

Sometimes I wish I didn’t sell off my console and small collection of games :(

I have about 30 games in my megadrive collection and I might give them a go on the system. Its nice that the controllers are compatible with the original system. My original controllers are getting worn down, so to have some new ones would be good.

How much is this at other stores?

Would love to play alex kidd.

shiny1 on 27/07/2010 - 22:02 ¶

Dude, this is so fricken cool. If they did this to NES and SNES, everyone would buy it for reminiscence’s sake. $50 is a good way to teach your kids what games you grew up with, and to let them appreciate how far video games have come.

Might you need a transformer for that?

Gravatar

bigosmallo on 27/07/2010 - 22:42 ¶

You’ll probably only need an adapter which most people have lying around.

Gravatar

tomsco on 27/07/2010 - 22:49 ¶

Sounds good. Just checking as when I looked at importing a new Dreamcast awhile ago I was informed of this barrier.

Gravatar

Lenneth on 27/07/2010 - 23:37 ¶

DC_girl here. One of the nice things about the dreamcast is it is all modular inside. if you can find someone with a broken dreamcast you can switch their transformer with the imported one. You only need to remove a few screws and unplug some cables.

page 14 of the catalogue, top left section. Make sure you zoom in to read the small print on the left before you get too excited like I did. I was contemplating which one to get and considered splurging and getting all three of them.

yea.. for $9 each. Even after you hit zoom, it implies the same thing. Until you move the page over a bit haha

For those who don’t want to buy old cartriges, there is another Sega clone on DX that uses games on SD-card:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.28970
Additional gamepad:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.30530

Gravatar

Swiper on 28/07/2010 - 09:34 ¶

Does the additional gamepad connect to the control pad with the SD slot that processes the game? Also what are the games worth or are they free. Really like the idea of this! Appreciate your advice

Gravatar

doperst on 28/07/2010 - 10:55 ¶

You can download games for free (don’t know if it’s legit though), check user comments on DX.
Yes, additional gamepad is connected to the main gamepad.
I don’t have this console but I read some very good reviews from people who bought it.

Alex Kidd FTW.

After reading this thread I’ve been compelled to go back and watch youtube videos of Alex Kidd in Miracle World for the past hour. Best game ever.

For $20-30 extra you can get a Playstation 2, but this is good for a bit of nostalgic gaming, I guess.

all these nubs saying “get a ps2” “get the mega drive collection” just dont get it…

playing these games on a console with the old school controllers is enough of a difference IMO to playing with a 360 controller or ps3 or wii… very tempted to pick one up as i do still have a heap of mega drive games… might wait for a sale tho… lol

If you’re any good at soldering, you can do just do the following and get a PC megadrive emulator:

Guys, be aware that the Alex Kidd game is the megadrive version Alex Kidd and the Enchanted Castle and not Alex Kidd in Miracle World

This made me remember this on youtube, a Sega song that had a quick snap shot of the Megadrive within the clip but was mainly about the Sega Master system, check itout!

This looks good from a nostalgic point of view. Although I was never been a console gamer more of an PC/APPLE II gamer myself in those days. Started with the PS1.

I would have got this if I hadn’t just purchased the SEGA MEGADRIVE ULTIMATE COLLECTION for xbox 360 a few weeks ago for $20.

Or as other people have suggested. Get the games online and use an emulator.

I wonder if this console emulates the oldschool blocky style graphics of the day?

interesting twisty that you picked one up the day before it was for sale. btw, i believe you- just can’t swork out how.

I went on the 29th and there was none in store and they told me that none of the stores had received delivery of it yet so I got a raincheck on it. They’ll contact me when it comes in (they think either today or saturday)
