Gwent Closed Beta Keys for Xbox and PC - FREE

520

Gwent was originally a card based mini-game in the Witcher 3 but the developers of the game are turning it into a stand alone card game. The game can be cross played between pc and xbox players.

GOG is giving away free beta keys for the game on Xbox and PC to celebrate the upcoming addition of the Nilfgaard faction to the game.

it's fairly simple to make a new Twitch account.

  • Is it the same as the mini-game or did they overhaul the mechanics?

    • +4

very different and involves a lot more strategy. the mini-game was much more basic (usually just spam spies haha).

I have been playing this game for the last 3 Months. Hearthstone is my favourite card game, I have never played "The Witcher" nor the Gwent mini game, but can say that is game is fantastic. Whilst it may seem like it has a lack of depth, I have had some of the "funnest" best of 3 games playing this game.

The developers are the first to admit it is a beta game, you occasionally have to restart after a completed game to see if anyone had tagged the game as a "good game" but this can be overlooked for the mechanics of the game, especially the bluffing aspect and game 3 tie breakers.

Well worth it if you can get a key.

Caveat: The developers make no mistake in telling you that your collection may be wiped when it moves out of beta. They have stated that players will be compensated as close to like for like as possible.

    • Would people who love Gwent but know nothing about Hearthstone enjoy it?
Would love to hear your opinion

      • Yeah for sure. The key here is that it is entirely different to Hearthstone gameplay. The general feeling on the Gwent forums is that this is Gwent the mini game on steroids :)

    • This was the review I came to see basical ?/Hearthstone. I lurve Hearthstone.

      • Yeah I absolutely love Hearthstone. I joined just after Beta. Hearthstone is copping a massive amount of heat in general right now because of the state of the meta. People are entitled to their opinions, and I enjoy reading most of them, but I'm the first to admit I am not a hard-core player. So for me, hitting 16 in ladder, enjoying the side play that is tavern brawl (regardless if it is a repeated brawl or not) and the odd arena run is enough for me to really enjoy playing an hour or so every night.

Gwent is an entirely different game. Its hard to get your head around not having the ability to attack another card :) I have not come from MTG or any other card game apart from HS, so for me it was entirely brand new. But so enjoyable!! To be honest it took me about 3 days to feel comfortable with it.

I can easily play these 2 games in tandem. They both complement my gaming experience. I will say that there are "some" similarities to HS (Deck building for one) but the game play and tactics are very different to ensure if you liked both, you could play both if you get what I mean. I love being a part of the beta community, it gives you a bit of buy in, and your gameplay and understanding can grow as the game grows.

My advice would be to not expect a HS clone. Its not that, but I can certainly give my experience from playing both that if you do enjoy HS, you may enjoy this as well. I Have had some awesome games come down to the last round, where both of us have only 2 cards left because we had tried to out bluff each other in the first 2 rounds :)

        • 16 is my best rank to date too, I don't use netdecks, and don't give a shit about the meta, we all have access to the same cards, you can crush the ones you have for the ones you want, albeit I did only recent craft my first Ysera. I love card games, especially ones with new rules.

  • Just signed up for the beta key and ran into an issue upon installing the game:

get the following error message: The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer

Apparently this is part of Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015, but I'm guessing I don't have it because Windows Updates on my computer have been fukt for a long time. I was pretty hyped to try this out but don't bother if your Windows Updates are behind.

EDIT: Weird that I have a massive software library but this is the first program that has encountered this issue. Possibly will be resolved by the time of launch, but haven't encountered this in other betas or alphas.

My PC collects C++ Redistributable like a kid collects pokemon. http://imgur.com/a/UDQKV

Edit: I just installed Gwent, and my PC picked up another C++ Redistributable for the collection.

      • you missing the 2014 C++ rRedistributable

        • Dang it, I should download my whole Steam Library, that should give me the missing ones.

  • I tried to get into it (not played the Witcher series yet) and just couldn't. I could barely understand it and got my ass handed to me each time, so I gave up

    • Same thing for me. But then Geralt's dwarf friend rewards him for a quest with some seriously strong cards.
I went back and defeated every NPC I could find. Found it really enjoyable.

  • thanks mate claimed and dling ;)

  • can confirm this still works

  • I really feel like there should be a new tag for these posts, still allowed to call them free, but a tagged "At the cost of data-mining" would really be helpful for what people do or don't want to look into further to find it out themselves.

    • it is free though theres no payment barrier or bullshit credit card requirement to get a free key

    • This is not like free software that hijacks your browser and data mines, this is a game, which will implement what i like to call the free 2 pay system. It is from a gaming company, not clickbank.

But you are youtube account, yes?

      • +1

Haha that may have been my autocorrect talking

  • If you click the upgrade link there is a free card Keg and copy of The Witcher as well.

  • Does this support x360?

    • Nope

This is actually a "Game Preview" on xbox, which means it is available to play indefinitely. It isn't the kind of limited run "BETA" we see often thrown around. The game is in BETA though.

Great deal OP, keen to hit this up.

  • https://www.playgwent.com/en - link to the official site, you can sign up for beta here if you don't want to go through GOG, but you are not guaranteed entry like on GOG.

I think this is closed now

  • Why no PS4 love? Are they planning on releasing this on android soon?

    • You could ask the same of WiiU- MMO's like this on consoles are still early days, I will feel sorry for you when I can play Red Dead on my PC. That's the real issue.

      • I have a gaming pc too, got that covered
