  • Does anyone know if the setup of Auto Recharge still means 30 day billing instead of 28?

    • -2

      28 days

      • So Telstra fixed the loophole then.

I recall many people previously saying that even though Telstra changed the billing cycle and wording to 28 days if you had Auto Recharge set up via your credit card it still reverted to 30 days.

      • +10

Its not 30 or 28 days, its the same date each month making it month to month via auto recharge.

        • Cool, that is what I wanted to know. So 28 days is really only if you manually recharge every month.

        • Maybe a silly question, but going off on what you stated about being the same date each month, what if I set up auto recharge on the 31st, and next month only has 30 days?

        • @4KGrubby: I would assume it would be paid on the 1st, or 30th. Might be illegal to pull it a day early, so go with the next day.

You might find that your phone network access is restricted come midnighht on the 31st until the payment is received on the 1st. The date is set at the date you set up auto payment so maybe avoid that.

        • @Tuba:
My thinking was actually a bit more wishful and ambitious haha.. If boost weren't careful enough, setting up auto recharge on the 31st could potentially score you a free month (until the 31st on the month after that) :P
But I'm sure like you assume, it would probably come out on the next day

        • +1

@4KGrubby: Or only bill you for 7 months? Im on board… who wants to test it??

  • 18 month expiry?

  • Is Boost the best value prepaid option for Telstra coverage? And is it full Telstra coverage? If not, what are the alternatives?

    • aldi

      • That's Vodafone isn't it?

Edit: Changed from Kogan to Aldi. :)

        • kogan is voda

        • +2

The only full Telstra coverage apart from Telstra is Boost. All the others offer Telsra wholesale, which is much like Voda or Optus coverage.

Boost is full Telstra minus 4GX speed, its upper limit is 4G. Telstra wholesale includes 4GX, but less coverage area.

      • +1

Boost has more access to the Telstra network compared to Aldi. So if coverage is your thing, then boost is the way to go!

    • I'm also interested in knowing whether Boost has full Telstra network coverage or whether it is the same coverage as Aldi gets.

A quick search brings up conflicting information with regards to NextG, but some threads on whirlpool seem to conclude that Boost has full Telstra retail network access whereas Aldi only has Telstra wholesale network access, no NextG and "download speeds of up to 100Mbps on 4G across 95% of the population".

      • +2

Its correct. No 4GX on Boost just 4G, but every tower Aus wide. Its plenty good enough for me.

Telstra wholesale is full speed, but no access to all towers. Closer to Optus and Voda coverage.

        • I can't decide between speed or coverage :P

At least the advantage of prepaid is I can swap without much hassle.

    • +2

Boost is on the Telstra retail network whereas Aldi and Woolworths are on the Telstra wholesale network. I think true blue Telstra customers get the full 4G speeds with Boost getting throttled slightly given they are cheaper. Then Aldi and Woolworths come slower again.

I am with Aldi and to be honest its fast enough for me when I download but certainly not the speeds I was getting when I was with Boost. Waiting an extra minute or two to download is no biggie to me but for some it is.

If you live in metro and don't travel much then Aldi and Woolworths are good options.

  • Is it possible to buy multiple and keep recharging using the codes provided by Boost every 28 days or do I have to port out and in each time?
Sorry if that's silly but I'm new to prepaid bargains.

    • sim comes precharged, so port out then back in

      • +1

That may trigger Credit Check if you port in/out frequently on Telstra/Boost prepaid. That sound strange but happened to me and my partner. Telstra advised following: "The most likely reason that the credit check triggered is because of the multiple accounts being created under your name with a different customer ID numbers".

        • Credit check?! Just telstra or other carriers can do this?
I've ported my # in/out of optus to/from like 10 different carriers in less than a year. And a couple of other sims under my name for my parents.
My credit history would be absolutely screwed by now, lol.

        • +2

@LymeLychee:I think its just Telstra/Boost. Last year I ported in/out to Boost/Vodafone few times and I was credit checked by Telstra 3 times. I found out when I got my Credit report from D&B, raised dispute with Telstra/Boost. First they said its an system error and few other lame excuses but then complained to TIO, it took almost 3 months to sort it out. Quite sure it would have happened to other people who frequently port in/out to Boost/Telstra prepaid.

        • @ClumpyGinger: Cripes, man. I've moved through Boost/Telstra a couple of times too =/.
And now to think of it… it could be unrelated .. but my ports into Optus aren't smooth sailing anymore. Always have to jump on live-chat and ask them to get the # manually released.
Thanks for telling me though. At least I've got the TIO as a last resort if my credit history is gone now.

sorry for silly question: so after a month a fee reverts to $30 right?

    • +3

Yes, unless you're happy to port out and back in again. People are purchasing this deal multiple times so that by porting they will pay only $10 per 28 days. Hence the interest in the long expiry for activation on these sim packs.

  • +5

Boost's coverage is fantastic, but their customer service is terrible. I had a lot of issues porting my old number over, cancelling the message to text service etc. Many of the people I spoke with or chatted with online did not do what I'd asked and I wonder if their staff (Philippines based??) actually knew what they were doing, or if they're all just wingin' it! If you do have any issues, I'd recommend getting straight onto their facebook page, or failing that, lodge a complaint.

    • This sounds exactly like my experience with Telstra. They probably have Telstra offshore customer service supporting Boost too.

    • +6

I'm pretty sure Boost are piggybacked by Telstra support. On a few occasions I was thanked for using Telstra!

    • I've had similar issues with boost trying to port back in and their system gets confused by old accounts. It wouldn't let me activate online, only via the webchat with the overseas support who never quite understand what you're trying to do

      • Had same problem was told I had to call to activate as the other don't have access to do it if you have an old account.

    • cancelling the message to text service etc.

What do you mean by this? Message as in when you miss a call and someone leaves a voice message / voice mail? Or are you talking about something else?

      • +1

Telstra and Boost both have 'Message2Text'. When active, callers can leave a 10 second voice message that's converted to a text message if the call is unanswered.

        • Awesome, yeah my brother was telling me about that before. Do you know if the feature can be toggled? And can easily be switched on or off if you want to hear the voice message in voice or as a text? Or do you have to pick one or the other when you set it up? Thanks for any reply :)

        • +1

I believe you have to call them to switch it off or back on

    • When you have problem with porting, I guess it's the same bad luck for every provider. Only some knows what to do. I recently had the issue with porting out from Optus, one livechat only keep saying go to store, other said just keep waiting. Same result with the phone support. After 4th attempt of livechat to luckily draw the knowledgeable support (2 of previous happened to be the same useless guy, lol) and a day wasted, finally it went through. Took 5 minutes for the last support to rectify the issue.

  • Been with Boost for a while now, still on their grandfathered $40 dollar 30 day plan. Love the coverage! Came from Live Connected. Didn't have any issues with signing up and porting.

    • What deal did that include?

      • It was 3gb of anytime data and 2gb of weekend data.

        • The new plan is $30 for 3GB and 1GB every weekend. Could be worth switching if you don't need the weekend data and save $10.

        • @Stix:

I did see that one! But the 2gb extra over the weekend is handy to have. I'm just holding on until Telstra have a good $40 plan with at least 7gb data then I'll jump ship again.

        • @ahseng: Boost now give 1gb, every weekend so 4 per month plus the plans std 3gig so 7 total. Youre jibbing yourself $10 and 2 gig.

        • +1

@Tuba: The other plan is 2GB per weekend so 11GB total.

        • +1

          @Stix: oh, my bad… I shall flagellate myself…

        • @Stix: Follow up, current plans @ $40, its 5 gig anytime plus 1 each weekend. Still 2gig less per month, but more during the week…

        • @Tuba: 👍🏻

Have you ever had to contact Boost customer support ahseng, or were you able to sign up and port your number over online using the form? That didn't work for me and it's been a nightmare ever since eg. I've been told several times that my issues were fixed when they weren't, I've been given the wrong or conflicting information from different support staff such as 'you need to buy a blank sim to port a old number'. Another staff member told me I needed to go and buy another $2 SIM, which when I went to activate had actually expired last August! I'm glad you had no issues ahseng, but this was my experience only last week. Their standard of service must have dropped significantly since you signed up!

      • I was able to sign up and port everything using their online form. I think I purchased a SIM pack then performed the activation part online, which I opted to port my existing number. I did have an issue with a sim card, but that was quickly rectified by sending them a message on FB. They were quick to reply and gave me the information I wanted without any dramas.

Bugger, that does sound like a terrible experience! Hopefully you get your stuff sorted and you'll be on your way with much better reception! :)

      • Sounds very similar to my sad experience recently, until I gave up on the Boost chat line and contacted their real tech support, which I suspect is Telstra.
Telstra shopfront staff deny that Boost is associated with Telstra saying they only lease infrastructure from Telstra & sent me to buy a replacement sim from a Boost retailer - Coles Supermarket.
I thought Boost was a subsiduary of Telstra. Is someone trying to distance themselves from Boost ?

      • Same.

Ended up sticking with Amaysim and issued a charge back. Boost customer service is hopeless and gives you the run around.

  • +3

Can i buy multiple cards and just activate them monthly with the new number as i only want the data

    • +2

      can

  • Does Boost use all frequencies on the Telstra network? I have Telstra because it's the only carrier that works at my beach house, but prices are hernedous.

    • +1

If you can Telstra at the beach house, you should be able to Boost there too as its full tower access, only 4g, not 4gx speed. Its $10, Id give it a shot.

  • $28.50 for 3. Does the 15% discount only apply to 1 item in the cart?

    • check out one by one for three times.
you can PAY $8.5 each time

    • I brought my 3 in separate transactions with $1.50 off each time.

  • Great, bought 8, thanks.

    • +1

      Did you make multiple accounts?

      • Obviously we all have multiple account from many years ago.

  • FYI - From the website FAQ's

BRINGING YOUR CURRENT NUMBER FROM TELSTRA
You’ll need a blank SIM, which you can’t get from retailers. The easiest way to get hold of one is to contact Boost on 125 8881 (8am-9pm, 7 days), so we can mail you one.

    • I'm glad you brought this to everyone's attention funky. This is true for Telstra, but not Telstra wholesalers like Aldi.

  • can i use 3 voucher in a row for this on the same number?

    • You could always try and report back

      Edit
      Looking below it appears possible

  • Im with wooly prepaid sim that allow me to receive phone call beyond 30days, is it the same with this ?

    • +2

all providers allow this but threaten that you might lose your number. I don't think they will lose your number unless it is inactive for a year or so.. correct me if I am wrong if someone knows better.

  • Thanks OP.

I start missing $1 woolworth mobile promotion. Oops, sorry. ;)

  • Thanks EC, great deal.

  • Better than Kogan deal.

  • thanks op.
Groupon allowing multiple purchases and voucher redemption.

Just confirming, has anyone had past success porting their # in & out of boost multiple times?

    • +1

      Yes, very easy process.

      • thanks :). Just making sure it's not one of those carriers that bars repeat port ins of the same #.

  • Is there a sign up bonus with Groupon?

  • +1

Great deal. Just trying to get the cashback with cashrewards, but I can't find the deal on the Groupon site (other than the direct link posted by EC). Anyone know the category it is under?

    • +6

I had the exact same issue but was able to get round it this way

      1. Open Groupon page and copy URL
      2. Go to cashback rewards and click through to Groupon page
      3. On the Groupon page opened by CB paste the boost URL
      4. Complete purchase
      5. Tracking email received

can use this optus sim to port out and port in ?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/291980

    • Yes

      Will be useful for porting.

    • +1

      No, it's changed.
Reports in that deal indicate now need to recharge ($10min) before number can be ported in😯
Maybe try the free Vodafone $2 SIM @7-11

      • Thanks for the heads up. They must be a very recent change.

  • +1

    So here's my plan:

    • Buy 3 of these and 3 $30 Optus prepaid sims @ $10 each

    • Alternate between both boost and Optus every month for 6 months.

Reduces the need to port out with $2 sims and saves time or headaches. Also unsure whether the above method is better for not being locked out due to credit check limits.

Or is porting out and in with $2 sims the best option still?

    Cheers folks

    • +1

Be careful with the Optus starter packs, apparently they expire after 30 days if you don't activate them.

      • +2

        @Fck

That's what it says, but we need a guinea pig…

        • +1

Exactly this. There's too much speculation going on.

      • I can't comment for newer starter packs but all the old prepaid kits I have stocked up on have had no issues activating.

Due to this on-going warning I have avoided restocking my Optus kits. However I haven't seen any confirmation yet of anyone running in activation issues.

With cheap starter kits always available I would rather not take the risk

      • yep , mine expire b4 I activate…

  • I haven't seen the code, bought 3 for 30 instead of 25.50. S#*%

  • Will a boost sim work in a Telstra locked 4G wifi unit? Thanks

  • Does anyone know what the voucher expires 1 April 2017 mean??

    • The Groupon deal expires on 1 April 2017 maybe.

  • +1

Fellow Ozbargainers, can you enlighten me on how to continue using same mobile number with these packs.
I saw one of the comments about alternating between optus and boost every month?
I'm currently with TPG so I def need to port out and pay that stupid fee.
And I still have loads of $1 optus sims from 7 Eleven Deal before.
So what do I do to keep using these prepaid boosts?
