  • Are ebooks on amazon really cheaper than book depository/booktopia?

    • +7

There are heaps of popular classics for free

      • Thanks for the link

    • +3

And it really doesn't matter. there is always Calibre to change the format.

    • Plenty of libraries have e-books now too.

      • It appears most libraries use "BorrowBox" or "Overdrive". I don't think these apps can be installed on a paperwhite??

        • +1

As grips mentioned there is a program called calibre, it allows you to convert ebook formats to ones that will work with your kindle and it allows you to backup your collection to a PC. Could also do a google search on Genesis Library.

        • +1

          @PeteM:
However, calibre will NOT convert books from most libraries as they have DRM attached. Default settings for Calibre only allow conversion for non-DRM books. Having said that, this is not the end of that particular road - there are ways of getting around it…

        • +2

          [@bishoz](/comment/4x4 978/redir):
Yes technically the default install can't remove drm, but let's not over complicate things. A very quick and simple calibre plugin installation will have your calibre automatically removing drm as you add books to your calibre library. Allowing you to back them up and convert the formats for cross device compatibility.

eReaderIQ is a fabulous website for finding free and reduced-price ebooks.

There are two ways I use it:
The first is to go to the freebies page, set the filters on the left to your interests, then bookmark the resulting link. Open that link every day or two as the free books change all the time.

The second way to use it is to go to the page for a book or author that you like then add the title/author to your watch list and you'll get an email if the book drops below the price you set.

    • It can depend which region your Amazon account is set for, different regions have variations in pricing and availability. I've found the majority of books cheaper on the kindle compared to pricing on new books.

    • There's always sales and such, but a lot fo the time it is on par or just slightly cheaper. My favourite part has been its ability to sync with audible though. whenever you are listening on audible it perfectly syncs your page to your kindle to continue reading. Huge fan of that. Plus you get in built dictionary, backlit so you can read in the dark and low light, and hilighting and note taking. so there are definite perks. Biggest perk though is space saving if yu have a small home with limited storage.

I bought one today so thought of uploading this post for ozbargainers This is my first post

  • Will jb pricematch?

    • Ask JB.

    • They generally do, I price matched a pc Speaker set up to MSY there the other day.

      • Thank you

  • shipping is 9.90

  • -1

(dupe - Sophie11 got in first) FREE* HOME DELIVERY for online orders over $99 - but excludes electronics. Shipping is $10 extra

  • How's it different from regular Kindle, the one with the buttons on side.

    • Not sure which your "regular" kindle is but the main draw of this model is the backlight

      • +3

I think technically it is front-lit, different to say an iPad which shines a light out to your eyes

Same price but with free delivery on their Ebay store. Might be worth adding to post OP.

Or use the Woolies giftcards to get (almost) 5% off.

  • Anyone recommend a good case for this?

    • +1

The Amazon case is excellent… super expensive at $54, but if your budget can cope imho it's worth it…

I mean, I've been using mine for 9 years, ie long after I've forgotten the price, and the leather/cloth just feels nice to hold and the open/close auto on/off just works well…

      • +2

definitely recomend this case too, worth it(I found it for about $30 6 months ago, so comes cheaper every now and then) but gives it a nice added weight closer to a real book, great protecion- I've dropped it a few times and it has held up real well.

    • If you can't find a cheap Amazon cover,

Just go for literally any of the cheap 'smart' covers on ebay/aliexpress, etc.

They should be synthetic/PU leather. You just push/click the kindle into a plastic shell and the cover contains a magnet to sleep / wake the kindle on opening and closing.

  • 5% off via e-gift from Cash Rewards

I got a new Kindle from Officeworks for $151 by mentioning this deal. They checked it online and voila - price beaten.

    • +1

Just did the same. Heaps of stock at the Glebe store.

I can't see that anyone has already said this, but the LOVE20 targeted offer posted earlier today by tightarse will bring the price of this down to $139. It does work, just done it.

  • BigW eBay store is out of stock.

    • It's been updated, more there now.

      • Out of stock again, do you know if they typically restock for this kind of promo? Would like to use the targeted eBay coupon…

        • I haven't known them restock like they did yesterday evening. The last one sold was at 8 p.m., so it doesn't look as if they are putting any more up.

I love my Kindle so much.

When I don't ride to work, I catch the bus/train. I used to struggle to read on a tablet screen with the glare from the morning or afternoon sun meaning it was impossible to read. I never wanted to get a Kindle because it seemed ridiculous to have a device just for reading books - and while I'd use a tablet, I still preferred the feel of holding a book.

Anyway, the glare issue of the tablet and the weight issue of lugging around a paperback finally got too much and I invested in a Kindle. It's been great, I've take it on holidays with me overseas - which is awesome as well, as it means I have multiple books accessible without the added luggage weight.

The battery life is amazing. It's great for reading in light or dark conditions.

Edit: I guess what I'm saying is… I would buy this without hesitation if I didn't already have one!

    • +1 for this. I share these sentiments 100% :)

    • 100% i was so against going digital with my books(I still tend to buy physical copies of my books a lot) but hot damn these work well. The e ink is virtually identical to a real page, and the backlit screens are perfect for low/no light.

  • dont know if anyone has use this for reading emagazines?

If you guys want free delivery just price match @ Officeworks on 1300 OFFICE.

You get the -5% AND free next day shipping. Source - work at OW. Surprised more people don't know that OW has free delivery for any order over $55.

    • +1

Free regional shipping or just metro?

      • +1

Its free delivery for over $55 to metro areas. I just ordered one and because it's before 11:30am therefore, I can get same day delivery.
LPG discount brought the price down to $151.

  • +2

I already own one and can honestly say this is one of the best products I have ever bought, at any price point, discount or not. I have gotten so much use out of it as well as saved on physical book costs that my unit has paid its worth many times over. Mine is 3 years and going strong, great build quality.

I know this isn't through Amazon, but if anyone ever buys one from Amazon directly, they had some of the most helpful customer service I've come across.

  • Guys
Is it the same one here which listing on Officeworks?
