"Coles & Woolies sell 0.1 gram for $14!!!"

How would you ever find the packet on the shelf?

      • +4

That comes up with 0.5g for $7.1 for me. Seems Woolies is much cheaper than Coles…

I have genuine concerns about "fair trade" issues with Iranian peasants working hard and gaining small in return. Can you provide a statement on how fairly you treat the farmers with you buying 50kg saffron in one go? You should be a billionaire.

        • +15

The whole reason of Saffron Store was to cut the middle men, bring quality saffron to Aus and around the world and to give a fair share to the hard working farmers in Iran. Around 400,000 flowers go into only 1 kilo of saffron. Middle men were killing the trade and treating farmers badly and they had the sanctions to blame everyone. We wanted to change that. it took 2 years for us to get farmers to trust us and gather courage to sell their fresh saffron to us. And here you are, enjoying first hand premium fresh saffron with a fraction of price knowing you bought it from farmers not corporates.

        • Peasant?! LOL. The last vestiges of Persian feudal system was utterly abolished back in 1963 by the last Shah of Iran. If you meant poor farmers by that, well, that's another story. They are impoverished because a monstrosity called Islamic Republic has been sucking resources dry in the country for close to 4 decades.

Aside from petty farmers who rely on saffron cultivation for a living, there are some landowners that hire workers to cultivate saffron and sell it for a meager profit. I know of an American old lady and her Iranian husband running a farm near the city of Neyshabur who sell off their surplus saffron every year.

Most of the profit is grabbed by the middlemen which is purely evil.

Speaking of "fair trade", if farmers in Iran were to be paid a Western wage, prices could soar to 10 times as much at the least.

        • Lol. Iranian peasants? What are you on about.

        • +2

@behzadm: Friend, You don't seem to understand that a farmer in Iran does not require a western wage to live a good life. This is true for other areas too since not only is their currency weaker but the cost of living is lower by ten fold. To increase their wage could potentially create economical issues due to farmers now earning more than say a doctor.

        • @Siddeeqi al-Hammoud: Buddy, I didn't say they "should" earn a Western wage outright. I worked as a doctor in Iran up until 2010 and barely sustained on equivalent of 2K USD income combined with my spouse with almost no savings, not to mention we were quite lucky that we owned our flat. Anyhow, what the rural farmers earn is abysmally low and the repressive regime holding the economy hostage is to be blamed.

I knew of farmers who couldn't pay for the transport costs to take their kids to specialty hospitals in the province's capital to treat their kids. One had a kid with brain tumor that went neglected for a few years simply 'cause parents were illiterate, unaware, and couldn't afford anything. The tumor had grown to dissolve the skull bone and stick out of the poor kid's fontanel. "Living a good life on a low wage", nope, I beg to differ.

        • @Saffron-Store:

          "cut the middle men"

          Such a Powerful word.

          ~Imagine a world without a middle man
          ~F2C (Factory to customer) directly
~Guarantee the lowest price possible, Super Competitive Price
~Enforcing the Factory to maximize their production efficiency to bring the price down even further
~More direct feedback to the manufacturer from the customer, in case the customer not satisfied with the product quality, reliability or durability
~Encourage the Manufacturer (Factory) to make some improvement to the product based on the most helpful review like amazon-review

I always craved to create a website that connect the manufacturer to the customer to enforce the direct communication regarding product complaint/feedback

        • @rodinthink: we cut 3 middleman to be exact…

        • @Saffron-Store: how come your prices are double that of Afghan supermarkets that retail the same brand (بهرامن Bahraman) that is popular in Iran?

        • +1

@superready: thank you for the msg.
It definite got to do with the quality and freshness. Some of these brands' saffron is 2-3 years old. Specially the ones that get here in Australia. They call it "left overs".
Not trying to judge them. But I'm a heav saffron user myself and not finding proper saffron was the reason we started Saffron Store.

          Hope I answered your question.

"Saffron can be a profitable crop but it is not right now, it can barely pay for the labor," grumbles 69-year-old Abbas Pishva, fingering a handful of the delicate purple crocus flowers.

That article is from a decade ago you dummy.

This stuff is great. Lucky you didn't express your unfounded concerns in Tehran lest you'd be at risk of a pubic hanging from a crane mounted on the back of a tray truck.

Anyway, the article also says this, which is much more interesting to me:

Ancient Persians used it as an aphrodisiac.

        • @JimmyTheMan: viagra is cheaper

        • Mon Dec 11, 2006 | 11:25 AM EST

        • @JimmyTheMan: wtf? That stuff should have been really great evidenced by your convincing answer. Just buy it from Afghan supermarkets (who basically retail the stuff that is used within Iran, e.g. Bahramen mark) $15 for 4 grams and $8 for 2 grams. This will save you a few dollars especially if you smoke the thing.

    • problem wouldn't be finding the packet. it'd be making sure the packet actually had anything in it! :P

    • The strands are contained inside a small glass vial in a bigger packet.

I think saffron is the most expensive per/kg item in supermarkets :)

Edit: Guess I have fat fingers :D

    • I did scan once and price was around $1500

I think this is the most expensive product in woolworths

  • +3

It pays more off to smuggle this into the country than drugs

  • -1

    Can you smoke this?

  • +1

I bought a pack to try to check how it goes. I will compare it to Kashmiri Saffron and see how it goes.

    • so how did it go since you mentioned it twice?

    Massive Sale - 1 Gram

    1 gm is not massive.

  • +4

I presume this is genuine, but beware there is lots of fake saffron out there:

If you're travelling through Dubai pick it up from the Spice Market.

    • +5

On your way, please pick 10 kg for us as well. Cheers :)

      • ahhaahah might have to pay duties in that case.

  • -2

I thought "Iranian Saffron" was slang for yellowcake.

  • +3

It is genuine. I got it last time and it gives wonderful flavour to pilaff.

    • Thank you very much for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed your saffron.

    • +2

I double that, good stuff and well worth the purchase :)

    • +2

Agree! I bought some previously and it is great in sweets and savoury foods.

      • Thank you and glad you enjoyed it

  • What's the shelf life / use by date of the premium saffron?

I'm tempted to buy a larger quantity, but I wouldn't want it to expire on me!

    • +4

The site says Best Before July 2019.
I'd get it now before Trump invades and expires the lot of them.

    • If you keep saffron away from air and moisture, it will last you years. That's why we have our saffron packs air vacuumed.
The air and moisture take away the aroma and sometimes texture of saffron.
Keep your saffron in an air tight container and you're good to go :)

  • +1

A nice product, bought some and was very happy, 1 gram has lasted me a while now as you dont need to add heaps.

    • Thank you for the feedback.

Wow - that really is posh spice

    Mmmm Seafood Paella!

  • +1

Excellent product, have been using it for a while and can vouch for it.

    • Thank you very much for the comment.

  • Are you sure that price is correct for the 25 gram pack? The 10 gram pack costs $6.175 per gram whereas the 25 gram packs works out at $6.456 per gram.

    • It's the packaging and postage which makes it a little more expensive.

  • +1

Thanks, ordered 2g. Look forward to trying it! :)

    • +1

Thank you. We are sure you'll love it! Let us know if you had any queries.

  • Too cheapskate to even consider saffron, but what makes it so expensive and flavoursome? Is it really that good or just overrated & rare like truffle.

    • +1

It's worthwhile when cooking Basmati rice.

      • +2

        It definitely is.
One of my friends made pilaff with exceptional taste.
I did not know that he used safffron.
I tried it a year ago or so, and here we comes I got the same flavour.
Saffron changes good pilaff to great pilaff.

      • I'm in Sydney 2145, Is there any shipping fee and how long it will take to arrive?

        • Thank you for the comment. The shipping for all our products is free within Australia. Aus Post takes 3-5 business days to deliver the goods.

      • +1

Just picked up a few grams and looking forward to it. As for the health claims on http://saffronstore.com.au/list-of-saffron-vitamins/ if you are going to consume 100 grams of saffron a day to get the 135% of the daily vitamin C dose your name should be brain dead!

  • +2

Hang on, I'm still going through my el cheapo method of getting rice colour with tumeric :-P
    (obviously minus saffron flavours too)

  • +1

This deal looks like a crocus hit!

  • How much do you need for a pot of rice?

    • Depends on how much colour you need or how much aroma you'd like. Also depends on how much rice you are cooking. We have articles about how to use saffron on our blog. Do check them out and if you still didn't find your answer, contact us and we will assist you.

      • I don't know my Mrs is Iranian but can't cook to save her life. I'll get her to have a look. I'm actually from Safranbolu (Turkey)

  • Op in your view, what is the best recipe dish for the use of your product?😋 thanks

    • +2

You'll never go wrong with using saffron with your fish or chicken. I love risotto as well.
Saffron rice with chicken korma and saffron tea are my all time favourites.

      • -1

Thanks, you are right with the directions, however I was hoping for a signature dish/recipe that you are fond of as it would be good to see what dealers cherish or …………………. complete the additional comments the way you see fit

  • +2

This is a great price for grade 1 saffron. While it's only about 50% cheaper than the Masterfoods, the Masterfoods appears to be a grade 2 saffron and can't really be compared. http://www.saffrondust.com.au/where-can-i-buy-saffron-thread…

Have never been a fan of supermarket saffron, so I'm hoping this can give a restaurant quality result rather than plain, slightly yellow coloured rice as you get with the Masterfoods stuff.

  • +1

Thanks! I've ordered from this store before and I recommend this store to all my friends as it is much better than the stuff from the supermarkets.
The only downside is the packaging - I previously bought the 1gm pack and it does come in a flimsy little bag so you have to find another container for it. But it's an awesome price for good quality saffron

    • +2

Thank you for the feedback. We have changed our packaging this year so you'll get it in a vacuum container. We have heard you and other customers and took action at the end of 2016 with the new saffron order from homeland.

      • +1

Thank you! I look forward to receiving my new order!

  • Thank you everyone for their comments and feedback. Feel free to contact us for any questions and queries. Have a wonderful week!

    • Which amount comes in the jars? The 10 gram and up?

      • Te jars in the images are not for sale at the moment. We used to give them out to restaurants who bought 50 grams or more to keep the saffron fresh in the warm and humid kitchen environment.

  • +1

Wife loves saffron, I am letting her know.

    • Thank you and have a wonderful day!

  • grow your own? https://www.diggers.com.au/shop/bulbs/saffron-crocus-9-bulbs…

however it might take some years to get a gram, depending on how many you plant… maybe cover the whole backyard with these flowers… then you can harvest annually. lol

    • I don't know if that's financially viable. But good luck!

    • +1

I had a work colleague do that and it is not as easy as it may appear, early morning starts and perfect weather. After about 5 yrs trying they gave up. There is a very good reason why this thing is so damn expensive.

  • +1

Thank you for all the support. Feel free to contact us for any queries. Have a lovely weekend!

  • I put an order in to try these out, but the checkout process didn't allow me to create an account… sigh

I went back later and created an account with the same email address but it's not linked to my order, oh well :(

Edit: not sure if this can be fixed up?
