Which Universal remote to buy?

I start this conversation by noting I know essentially very little about universal remotes.

Just bought a New Hisense 75"4K TV and at the same time was given a 5.1 surround system by my Father in Law. There is no remote however for the Amp that accompanied the speakers. An old Onkyo Tx-sr576 unit.

Now the surround is working perfectly, but its a hassle to have to get up whenever you want to turn the sound on/off.

Can any modern universal remote to buy just work seemlessly with this tech? Is there a compatibility list associated with the remotes to see if my particular amp will work? Do I need the original remote for the universal one to be programmed from?

Lastly any suggestions on which remote would be the best one to go for?

Yes, a lot of questions. Hopefully someone out in bargainland, has some answers.

Cheers in advance
Danta

apparently this bad boy will work with the amp - US $7.58 delivered from aliexpress.

will control tv too (apparently, but I can't guarantee that)

    • Well, provided this works, this could be one of the cheapest fixes in recent memory. Don't forget Cashrewards! Cheers

I like the Logitech Harmony remotes as they are stylish and programmable. A little on the expensive side and they have reduced the number of remotes they offer these days. I got my Harmony One remote for about $80 4 years ago but they no longer offer this model and the replacement one is almost $300 for some reason (both have colour touch screens though).

    • Good buy on the Hisense 75" (I bought one too).
Harmony remotes work quite well and may be suited for you. You simply connect it to your PC via USB cable and then configure it by putting in your make/model of device and it automatically places the buttons for you - with the ability for you to make amendments.

I was impressed as it even worked for my Optoma projector (which I needed a replacement remote for). Mind you, I have mine connected to my receiver using default settings but the input button doesn't work so I have to manually change it - this can be adjusted when configuring on PC however.

      Good luck.

  • Note check your phone. Some androids have an IR module built in so with the correct app you can also use your phone as a universal remote

  • Try the SURE app, even does my air con at work ;)
