This phone is better than the 6p in every respect except that it's a Xiaomi product. I can't see myself spending $800 on a phone, but if I were then I'd pretty seriously consider this.

    • +27

Nexus 6P is also a Chinese phone.

    • +9

And.. the 6p is a Huawei phone.. your point?

      • +2

One point is the Nexus runs stock android.

        • And anyone can flash LineageOs or other custom ROMs to get near stock or AOSPish experience. Can't believe the amount of naivety on here.

        • @adrianhughes1998: True, but """*Please be reminded that this is a Chinese version mobile, which comes with pre-installed Chinese apps. Act of rooting the mobile to delete the apps/ flash 3rd party roms will void the warranty provided by DWI. If you have any concerns or enquiries, please feel free to contact our customer service team for further support on the chinese language apps"""

        • @abb: also no Android Pay if you unlock the bootloader, also the Flash process for Xiaomi isn't as simple you make out…have to request developer access etc etc. So its not in the realm of "Anyone" IMO.

        • +1

@adrianhughes1998: i agree people think stock android is so good, and nothing comes close.

        • @PonyTable: yeah perhaps i should have said anyone with tehcnical knowhow. Not too hard if u do the prerequisite reading though. Yeah i know, just register online and they unlock for Dev and send u SMS when it's done.

        • @abb: probably just as well too because there is a strong possibility with these retailer ROMs of malware. Prefer to flash stock Chinese ROM or if don't want traces of Chinese language and u want Google play, then flash global ROM.

        • @SimpleRoger: it's All about price to performance ratio and honestly stock android is good but the amount people are ripped off locally on phone contacts is horrendous.

        • @adrianhughes1998: what mobile plans are you on, if you buy a phone through mobile citi and use a reputable telco, you're only saving $80, or so, eg s7.

        • @SimpleRoger: lol what. When a phone comes out it costs RRP or so for example, and the contact cost over so and so months is hundreds more. Give me an example mate

        • -1

@adrianhughes1998: Since when is LineageOS and other custom roms anything like stock android. Just cause it looks like it, doesn't mean it is it.

          No thanks to unofficial OS.

        • @CLoSeR: LineageOS previously known as CyanogenMod. Stock Android is Google's take on Android, and it is compiled from AOSP. Every monthly security update can be contributed to by Google but ultimately the changes come thru on AOSP first.

LineageOS and other custom ROM's too are built from AOSP. So basically google takes that source code and adds their google apps to it along with any other customisations for the device (double tap to wake, whatever else).

So when you are referring to stock Android, yes these custom ROMS are a lot like what people call "stock Android".

        • @CLoSeR: p.s. owned.

    • +1

      Lol, the ignorance

    • still another racist. Off with you

  • +3

this phone looks heaps better than my iphone 7 :0

  • +3

    Inb4 Band 28?

    • +5

Actually a pretty big deal for a $750+ phone… Could be a compromise on a $250 China phone but not at this price point imo.

      • +2

Yeah I would band 28 at that price …..

    • There is a Band 28 version of this phone but its an extra $100-200

      • +2

Literally the only good thing about this phone compared to competing phones in this price bracket is it's thin bezels.

It's got a bellow average camera, a buggy os (got my parents mi 5's from a recent deal and not impressed with muiu) and no band 28 LTE. Let alone the fact that you have a very limited/painful warranty.

I just don't see the attraction, for half the price, maybe, but not at more then you can buy the latest Samsung or LG flagship.

        • +1

Oh I'm not onboard for a $800 Chinadroid either.

Read my post below, believe me the warranty issues alone are a living hell when you need your phone for work.

  • Any deal on Xiaomi Mi 5s? ;)

  • +1

I'd be careful buying any phone let alone a Xiaomi from DWI. I bought a nexus 5x from them and the charging port overheated and melted the plastic, but they won't cover it under warranty.

    • Did you try credit card charge back?

      • Good question. I think it was outside of the time period my credit card provider did charge backs. I'll double check.

      • -1

A credit card charge back is for fraud purposes only. You would have to claim that it wasn't you who conducted the transaction and that someone had compromised your card. That would be fraud by you.

        • +1

          https://www.fos.org.au/small-business/merchant-chargebacks/

Some common reasons for chargebacks are:

          No cardholder authorisation
          Illegal transaction
          Forged signature on voucher
          Expired card
          Goods/services not supplied
Transaction over floor limit without authorisation
          Processing offline when terminal working

It could be argued that they didn't provide an adequate warranty - which is part of the Goods/Services supply.

I performed a chargeback recently because an online store shipped the wrong products and then didn't reply to any of my requests to rectify - not even a return address to send products back to.

        • Each Credit Card has its own T&Cs. I have successfully charged back on items that didn't arrive within the time frame assuming they were lost.

  • Is the dual SIM 4G+3G or 4G+2G ?

    • +3

      4g+3g
      Typing on the 256gb version

      • +1

Great to hear. Pity it doesnt support USA LTE network bands otherwise would have been a great phone

  • +3

Price is dropping rather quickly because they are hyping up for a MIX2 with an even higher screen/body ratio. Not to mention both the S8 and the iph8 will be up there on the big screens too.

    • You will have to wait at least another year for MIX2.

      • I believe they are targeting Q4 this year according to most sources. But then, there's targets and there's actual reality of when it will be released.

  • +7

Price isn't too special as the normal price at AliExpress is $579.99 USD / ~$768.11 AUD before involving cashback.

    • +2

But delivery time is very different. Aliexpress's takes 3 weeks normally, but dwil takes 3 days.

      • And still cheaper with DHL and cashback.

        • thanks for sharing

  • Snapdragon 835 phones are pretty much around the corner. I would not buy a 820/821 flagship phone unless it has a great discount right now.

    • +3

LG G6 is a flagship with 821. I don't think past 3 generation of flagship CPUs makes a difference you will notice as a general everyday user.

      • +4

The main difference is that 835 built on a 10nm and 820/821 is built on a 14nm process. Even if you do not care about processing power then 835 is significantly more energy efficient.

This might be a marketing spiel, but "The 14nm Snapdragon 820/821 was no slouch, but the move to the 10nm node has allowed Qualcomm to register huge gains in energy efficiency and performance. The Snapdragon 835 is 27% faster while consuming 40% less energy, with the overall size being 30% smaller than the previous generation."

My point is that phones with 820/821 are about to become equivalent to "midrange" phones, and I would not consider $700-800 for a mid range phone to be worth the money, especially not with the trade offs you have to make to use this in Australia (no B28, no local support etc).

        • +3

Whilst qualcomm tend to emphasise the improved power efficiency of their chipset, in the grand scheme of things it won't be as significant as they claim. Whilst the new processor will consume 40% less power, the main battery drainer is and always will be the screen. So 40% less power consumption may only give you 5-10% more battery life given the high resolution screens on today's phones.

I contemplated buying this phone but the steep asking price is pushing me more towards a oneplus 3t or LG v20.

On a random note, Vodafone's 4g network runs on 850mhz which is supported by the xiaomi and oneplus. Whilst Vodafone is not as fast as optus or telstra, they do offer beefy data plans nowadays.

        • +2

@DangerNoodle: true about processor but irrelevant here as what you're paying for is the thin as fark bezels and ceramic build. Period.

        • +1

          @DangerNoodle:

Battery drain from demanding games (e.g. hearthstone) are significant, and there is evidence that older phones uses significantly more battery compared to newer phones. But you are definitely correct that the SoC doesn't necessarily improve battery drain from the screen.

Overall, with the increase pixel count and mobile content consumption, any gain is a gain :)

        • @Fiximol:

It generally depends on what you mean by older phones. Older phones as in used phones or unused older model phones? Recharging frequently and quick charging frequently tend to shorten battery life in terms of duration of use as well as reduce the number of charges. I've found that gaming a lot of my g5 has shortened it's battery life significantly. Previously I could get through a day of work with 92% charge remaining, now I finish a day of work with 65% remaining with similar use.

Also, if you're referring to phones using the snapdragon 810, the task scheduler qualcomm used on that chip was shockingly bad, hence the terrible battery life on phones using that chipset compared to previous 801 and current 820/821.

Although this phone has a larger screen, its screen is lower resolution and it has a bigger battery. Whilst having an 835 would boost battery life slightly, this phone will already beat other flagship phones by a mile just but using a full hd screen instead of qhd and by having a bigger battery.

    • +3

Lol and refurbished runs the risk of effing up again cos of original issues or motherboard. Well done for the comparison.

    • +1

You're clearly missing the point of this phone.

    • +1

It's the other way around — this phone is not even targeting OZ market. We have to purchase from 3rd party sellers to get around this bl**dy sh*t market discrimination.

  • +1

Great phone…Had it since before Xmas.

    Got the 256gb from vickmall.

Hasn't missed a beat. Camera is average if that's your thing, I hardly use it so that doesn't worry me.

Going back to a phone with a bezel is weird.
If this phone was made by anyone else you'd be paying double easily.

    • Not sure how you can stand to use a phone with no bezel, my Redmi 4 gives me enough greif with the 2.5D glass, i'm always pressing things with the hand i'm using to hold it.

      • +1

You need a finger ring holder that sticks in the back. Can't imagine using my RM note 4 a day without it.

        • Are these phone specific or generic products? I'm intrigued.

        • @vv4rhead:

Something like this it allows you to securely operate the phone with one hand.

And as a bonus allows you to take perfect selfie and act as a phone stand lul.

        • @mikkim4eva: I think you mean PopSockets <3

  • I got my 256GB from aliexpress. This is a beautiful phone and I can not image a day without it!

    • +8

That my friend is called love..

      • +1

Sh, do not tell my wife.

  • Insane sized, 6.4" is plain crazy

Maze is coming out with a boarderless phone any day, this puppy is 6" too

    • +1

Insane sized, 6.4" is plain crazy

The phone has absolutely minimal bezels so it feels much, much smaller than other 6.4" phones like the Z Ultra or Mi Max.

      • I concur. I have mi max and it's not even that big they've done a great job with bezels and thickness.

Now Asus zebfone and Lumia 1320/1520 were way too big in hand

        • +1

Agree, it's almost the same length like iPhone 7plus, but it's a little bit wider.

    • +8

Where are Apple products made in?

      • +3

Factories in which workers commit suicide.

        • +1

If Foxconn were a country, their suicide rate would be lower than the US's.

    • Sounds like 99% of phone brands

    • "China so bad. Cheap chinese. Rude. Poor. Bad. Wah wah baby needs attention."

  • Hi sorry with things I have heard phone is amazing looking and very high specs but only things that worry me is screen which is of glass and with one drop it won't last :( otherwise a brilliant beauty.

    • Is there any other smart phone which is not made of glass and will not break when dropped??

      • Nokia 3310. That thing breaks glass.

Yes it is a smartphone. So smart is breaks glass.

      • One of the Motorola's comes with screen breakage as covered by warranty if dropped…..Probably screen survives but internals dead and that isn't covered.

      • With glass means just glass no gorilla Glass or atleast something that possibly survive drops check YouTube you will find a few videos where phone just dropped like 15-30cm height and screen cracked

      • Moto x force. Check the YouTube of it. But only the screen, internals can still go and not waterproof.

Got one for my wife. Looks, feels and operates smoothly so far.

  • Such a great looking phone :')

  • Can Google apps be side loaded or do you need to flash a different rom to access Google apps?

    • +1

The one I got already had google apps on it. It was a vendor rom that vickmall put on…All in English and no Chinese stuff. Not sure if DWI do the same

But i got rid of that and use this https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/7-3-9.39116/
Have used it on previous Mi Note Pro, weekly updates and has everything you need.

      • How did you unlock your Xiaomi? I did the apply for code to unlock but they never responded to my request….

        • Since I already had a previous Xiaomi phone I think it was already unlocked as the accounts are linked or vickmall unlocked it when they installed the vendor rom.

You can check by running a command prompt to see if the phone is unlocked or enable developer settings on the phone and check there.

        • I managed to follow a process online to root my redmie note 2 last year. I had to try a bunch of different options to get it to work - but got there in the end. I can't remember which way worked though.

  • +1

I have watched many youtube videos about this phone.
I love it as a concept phone but I disagree with how Xiaomi move the camera to the bottom of the phone.
Why not keep the speaker grill + camera at the top of the phone, and extend the display down to the bottom. Replace hard buttons with on screen button.

    problem solved

well, may be that will be version 2.

    • +3

I love it as a concept phone but I disagree with how Xiaomi move the camera to the bottom of the phone.

Just rotate it upside down when using the front camera?

  • +2

I would seriously consider this were it not for any potential issues using the warranty.

    • +2

      100% yes.

I bought my Xiaomi direct from Xiaomi China. It had been working flawlessly for 5-6 months and then it got the red-light/battery glitch error.

Can't turn it on, can't charge it, can't do anything with it. Emailed Xiaomi twice and both times I got unbelievably retarded answers along the lines of - 'sometimes phone will use more battery, turn off apps and turn down screen brightness!!'.

I had to reiterate that it was not a battery life issue, the phone was basically bricked - I even linked their own forum posts and its like they don't even read what you send them because I got a second video asking for screenshots of the issue…

  • +1

Be careful DWI tend to send carrier marked phones without stating in description, has happened to me a few years ago and a friend recently

    • Dont think this phone will have carrier marked one.

  • +1

I'm assuming Android Pay doesn't work on this like all other Xiaomi phones?

    • It's got NFC I believe. Isn't that what is required for Android Pay to work?

      • Yeah it does have NFC, but from browsing forum threads Android Pay does not work as Xiaomi are pushing for their proprietary 'Mi Pay' system

        • +1

Well, there goes my love for the device.

  • Pretty expensive for Xiaomi. Mid $500 is what I would pay max for Xiaomi. For $100 more is S7 edge with so much better camera any reason to buy this except for thin bezels?

You can buy three Motorola G4 plus with this price if you want dual Sim, official google updates with local warranty.

  • Very niche and unique device but I personally won't spend that much on a device with practically useless warranty and no b28. It's more expensive than a v20 or even a grey import s7.

  • not even 7.0

  • Xiaomi official site in Chinese:
