Recommendation Scooter Or Bike 4yr+ old kid

My 4yr old has been riding a three wheel micro scooter for about 18months. We have recently moved to an area where there is a skate park and he saw the kids riding two wheel scooter (Razor branded) in saucer shaped facility and wants to buy a scooter.

He is pretty good and fast on his scooter and is a big kid looks 5+.

Am not sure if i buy him a push bike or buy him a 2 wheel scooter. Any suggestions or recommendations if I shud go for the scooter / bike and the brand pls?

Does it have to be brand new? I see heaps of scooters at garage sales and on Gumtree going cheap.

Fir a 5 year old I'd otherwise suggest an inexpensive scooter from Kmart. They are light and decent for a starter (I've rolled around my local skate bowl on one and it held my weight no problem)

Buy an inexpensive scooter at first then "reward" him as he improves with a better scooter. Thus fostering a sense of achievement/positive feedback

  • Don't skimp on a helmet . I see so many kids down the skate park wearing no helmet , and quite a few adults as well .
My sons ten and wants some $600 scooter for his birthday/ not going to happen . I'd rather he didn't as it's only a matter of time before he seriously injures himself .
Not only that but the clientele of the skate park leaves a bit to be desired .
But yea at 5 I'd just be grabbing him an MGP that Target etc sell for $80 off gumtree for less than half of that . No 5 year old is going to break it .

    • Agree with that mate - helmet must. And he is quite religious about it too !!

      I will look for MGP.

  • Did the mini micro 3 wheeled scooter at about the same age - 3.5 yo - Now handed down to his 3yo sister.
Then the 3 wheeled Radio Flyer scooter - e.g. https://www.diapers.com/p/productname-1079886
Then the 2 wheeled Razor fold up type (courtesy of OzB deal)
Then the spiderman bike from Kmart - Never took - still goes back to the 3 wheeled Radio Flyer

Now 6yo - still loves the 3 wheeled Radio Flyer

Loves the skate park and doesn't mind that kids the same age are on 2 wheeled Razor or similar…

edit: and yes, get a great helmet - http://www.kmart.com.au/product/pro-skate-helmet---small-med…

    • Thats good to know that he can do the skate bowl with a 3 wheeled one. I thought that you need a 2 wheeled one for that as the three wheeled one is bit limited in terms of steering control? My 4yr old has got the Maxi Micro but i thought he cannot use it in the bowl - you reckon it will work fine?

      • he seems to like it like that, and he's not the most daring as far as tricks go etc. but he does love going fast.

Plus, it probably didn't help that he saw dad face plant himself off the two-wheeled scooter into the concrete…

  • My 4yo got a scooter for Christmas. His older brothers got new ones, the 4yo got a hand me down, which was donated to son 1 by friends. $10 for some new deck grip and about the same for some grips and he was over the moon, and son 1 didn't know it was his old one either. It's one of the basic MGP non folding scooters, probably about $90 new. Perfect.

Still got a couple of the folding razor scooters we've had for a few years as spares, or easy to chuck in the car.
