Lenovo ThinkPad X230: Hinge Replacement?

The hinges kinda became loose, would it be possible to replace them? Where to purchase and detailed instructions please.

  • I am not sure about your model, but a lot of parts are available from Lenovo.

That's the instruction from Lenovo on how to replace it, so I'd assume Lenovo might allow you to buy/provide it depending on your situation?

Never mind on getting the part from Lenovo, it does seem to me that Lenovo don't provide hinges. Time to eBay?

    • Thanks for the Aliexpress links, it has feedback on individual items unlike ebay.

Is it an easy process though, replacing the hinges??

      • Depends on your level of skill

loose hinges could also be due to screws becoming loosened. If you can get to the screws and simply tighten them and it fixes the issue, then congrats..

if not, then you would need to buy new hinges

        • Screws seem tight already, hinges got elongated a bit due to years of use. I bought this off gumtree, it's fairly old laptop.

  • Before you buy you should investigate clearly what has caused the 'kinda loose' hinges.
You need to disassemble the case and see which side has become loose, if it is the hinge mount fixing to the chassis.
If it is loose and the chassis is cracked, plastic or metal, a new hinge wont fix it if it cant be tightened.
Or is it the hinge itself failing?
i.e. Is it loose meaning no friction or tightness and you cant keep the screen at the desired angle?
If so It could be adjustment if adjustable, but if encapsulated within the hinge itself a new pair of hinges might do it.
Good luck, if the mounting is solid it might be worth a go.

I once bought some Asus hinges only to find the lappy chassis mount area was silver plastic, was cracked. The new metal hinges were so firm and tight, they quickly caused the fine cracks to open further and it was impossible to fix them securely.
It was in my opinion designed to slowly fail from new. Quite obvioulsly the mounting area moulding design was fragile. No metal inserts, just plastic block. Asus Design and Marketing appear work closely together to ensure they keep lifespans limited and new laptop sales up. They certainly dont make the $2.50 base cases available as a repair part and hinges are easy to duplicate so extra sales can be made, oem or copies… before the whole thing goes in the bin. My 2c!
