Why Is Coconut Water Quite Expensive Here in Australia?

why is 'coconut water' a bit expensive here in Australia? I notice this as back in the islands there is so much coconut to go around and here we pay a fortune for a little' coconut water? also I notice there are a few 'brands' of coconut water? isn't it just the same thing or is there a distinctly different 'taste' to each one? aren't we getting charged 'an arm and a leg' for something that should be a lot cheaper? What are your thoughts on this? Another profit-markup from these companies perhaps?

  • Re different brands: a lot of different brands add a lot of additives to their coconut water so when shopping for some read the ingredients and make sure it's 100% coconut water first

    The real question:
what is not quite expensive here in Australia?

    • +5

      Fresh milk.

  • cnut water is always expensivehere. i thihk its a demand issue

    • +3

Lol my brain misread that as (profanity) water. That's also a demand issue in some places in Australia :)

Huh, you don't state the price you were paying "back in the islands" or how long ago or what the present price there is…

Currently Zico is $3 per litre @ Woolworths.

Maybe you should start selling coconut water if you think you can do it more competitively.

  • -2

whoever upvoted dragonindespair's comment is just being silly. How is it not expensive"? it's on "Special"!!?? at Woolies for $3 - which is half price , so the normal RRP price is $6 for the same Coconut Water? some people a bit delusional here aren't they?

    • +3

      I wouldn't say delusional. I'd say nuts… Coconuts.

    • What are your thoughts on this?

Rather amusing how OP's gone on a full rant about coconut water.

    • +1

On the islands a litre of milk costs…..

      Norfolk its $3 plus

whereas here at ozbargain we never pay more than $3 for coconut water. A few weeks ago it was $2.50

Just like Coke costs $3 but every few weeks its half price

Why is lolly water more expensive……….

………. because people pay the price 🍾

      • +5

My Dad used to say "if the prices are high blame the fools who pay them".

        • +2

Oh and also why do people buy chocolate flavoured Coco water 😀

          The questions abound

        • +1

          @RockyRaccoon:
Tried them once. Instantly regretted buying it. Definitely an acquired taste.

What bothers me most is the quality. Sometimes I think they have run water through haystack and are selling as coconut water.

Price-wise: Considering each coconut makes for a little more than a glass, e.g. 300-400 cc of water, then $3 per litre isn't that bad. Turns out to be an equivalent of 2.5 to 3 coconuts.

I've never been able to buy the actual coconuts for under a dollar in Thailand or other countries. We are not buying it on site, so you have to include shipping costs too.

    • Let's not forget that the coconut water is but one product derived from the coconut. The husk, flesh and oil are also processed into products.

Is is safe to drink large quantities of coconut water? In certain parts of India coconut water is used to euthanize the elderly. The mechanism is believed to be an abundance of potassium leading to acute renal failure.

Death by coconut for anyone who is interested.

      • +4

Sergeant, the old grandfather was euthanised by his relatives with coconut water.

But sir, there is a depression on the back of the head indicating blunt force trauma. It matches a coconut.

No no, nothing more to see here, write up the report and let's go back to the station.

        • +1

Must have been mistaken. It's common knowledge that as we age we develop a coconut shaped impression toward the rear of the skull.

  • +7

Because it's trendy like quinoa, chia, kale, smashed avo and all similar things.

    • trendy = healthy?

      • Usually there are alternatives that are just as healthy and cheaper. E.g. kale is a good dark vegetable but so is broccoli. When kale is cheap I make Portuguese kale soup. Good winter warmer.

It's the fuel of the Pete Evans brigade.

  • wilson wants a better life

    • and the residuals from the film.

  • +3

Kale doesn't cost more to grow than cabbage…it just costs more because insta-celebs spruik it.

To sum this whole first class world problem thread :

Just drink tap water. Coconut is luxurious item

In NQ the gubrmeant cut down all the coconut palms on beaches, in National Parks on the islands, and everywhere even though most were the result of ocean bourn nuts.
They were worried they would kill to many dumb tourists
They kept the photos for the brochures though
