          Still shallow? =D

        • +13

@sator: it's not only shallow and it's downright sexist to include a human being in a list of possessions.

    • Rolex or bust bro

      • -6

Rolex and Tagheur are for ppl who know nothing about watches.

Might as well buy a gold one with lots of diamonds. Classless

        • +2

Incorrect. Rolex is actually highly regarded among WIS.

        • What is your choice of watch sator?

        • +1

Before baseless comments like these, have a read of this article on Rolex, then read about how they actually above and beyond any other watch company to keep accuracy on all their watches.

          I assume you're a purist.
Realistically, who gives a crap about accuracy?
If you want accuracy, go buy a $5 quartz watch.

        • @hotmustardsauce:
          Which model?

        • @JB1:

          Descending:

          JLC
          Omega
          Seiko

        • @hotmustardsauce:

Yeah yeah, I know it's part of the of the golden four brands. Just can't stand it due to all plebs aspiring to it I.e. your MTV and rich Chinese crowd

        • @sator: Frankly nor does any other mechanical watch company care about accuracy, but they (Rolex and several others) still go above and beyond the COSC accuracy certification, on the contrary the king of all watch makers doesn't even bother with the COSC for their watches, yet their watches sell for millions.
However a quartz watch cant be compared to a mechanical one, its like comparing a 1930 Porsche to a modern Toyota, if i want reliability i'd chose the later, but then you are missing the whole point.

    Wishlist item - http://us.tissotshop.com/media/catalog/product/cache/2/image…

Currently wearing just a mid range Tissot - but have been looking to add to the collection. Wouldn't mind replacing it with a Tag or Omega or Oris. But they get expensive real quick and I cant bring myself to spend that much.

    • +2

Same, got a Tissot Tradition Chronograph and PRC-200 Rubber. 1st one for business 2nd one for casual.
I really love Tissot brand and I wanted to upgrade to Tag but honestly, not worth it. Better to stick with Tissot high range than get to low Tag.
Price does not count, Tissot is great brand and quality.

      • +7

You can't even read the time on that… its completely to show off.

        • -1

          They all are.
Everyone has a phone with the time on it.
          Pure posing/
Sad really, if wasn't so wanky

        • -2

@King Tightarse: Like anything you acquire, watches too are completely discretionary. There is billion dollar industry producing timepieces, the heavy weights whose steel watch just recently sold for $11m (Google PP Steel 1518) and so many young companies getting into the industry to make Mechanical watches, purely for 'telling the time' and 'posing'. I reckon they've forgotten their phone does the same job, Sad really. So wanky.

        • @gaurav1504:
I completely understand the hobby and investment angle in classic watches but as soon as you are wearing it as a "power statement" as per the OP, different story

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:
          Not my watch.

I wear the Casio Royale, its comfortable for me, I need to read the time around 200 times in the day, has a Day+Date for when brain stops working, the different time zones are good for tracking family/friends, the Countdown timer is used for lunch breaks.

          It's 99% functional.
And it doesn't look bad (for me).

Some might call it cheap looking, or geeky… but I don't care, not a poser… I like that it does what I want and it does it simple.

        • @gaurav1504:

let us not forget they market them as 'chronographs' and the reality that a lot of them provide less functionality than a 12$ casio you can get from target says they are for posers.

          Wanky af mate

        • +1

@King Tightarse: so true and we all are at the mercy of our sometimes useless carriers.
Sometimes you have to remind Telstra that Queensland has no time shift and they have to correct that pleading stupid.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: I'm with you on that, I reckon power statement is more in the wearers mind than anyone else. The mechanical watch community was always going to be a small percentage the moment digital became the norm. And I guess that's what makes it more interesting. I do reckon the watch often tells people the type of person you are. The guy who wears a blinged out Gold-Dimond Hublot is a very different than a guy wearing a Vintage milsub (both same value). No judegment on eiither, but it does tell you a lot about them.
The point i was trying to make is if watches were simply about telling the time, the Casio Gshock would rule the roost.

        • @lmc123: I don't reckon there is any denying in what you said. The moment one makes a statement like my $2 watch keeps better time as a $10000 JLC any discussion after that is going to be futile. Cant expect the heads and tails of the coin to agree.
The intrinsic value of watch or anything which you have saved up for or long to desire is highly personal. It is a statement it makes about one's attention to detail. If that makes a person wanky, then so be it.

    • +2

      That's a gorgeous watch!!! <3

    • Love Tissot

  • +2

I think they most often do but it's certainly no rule.

I haven't worn one in many many years. Personally it's a sure reflection of me: cheap, simple, hate carrying unnecessary things and generally tardy. When I think about it most of my friends have no watch or watches of utility over form. I don't think it's a fluke.

  • I only recently got my first watch that i actually wear. My first watch i got for my 21st birthday from my parents as a gift, its a really nice watch but not exactly my style so i have only worn it a handful of times. I recently bought a Gshock from one of the amazon deals here a while back and apart from the one i got for my 21st its the only watch i have. I wear it daily to work and out to sports and what not. I am however currently looking for a more professional watch that i could wear to work and out to a nice dinner or party.

  • I have a mechanical watch which is off for warranty repairs at the moment and I've been using an apple watch.
I probably wont use the mechanical watch again.

The only watch I want to buy is a Omega Seamaster in blue. The problem with luxury watch is the servicing cost.

    https://www.omegawatches.com/customer-service/service-prices…

I'll just live with telling the time by the sun.

    • +1

Servicing costs aren't cheap, but it is less than $2 a week, if you look at it over the lifetime.

      • Are you trying to convince me to buy one a Seamaster in blue? I like my Gshock GA-400 9b. funky colour

      • +3

"for less than a cup of coffee a week!"

        • +8

brb signing up to insurance line

    • I had my Seamaster serviced recently after 7 years at Omega Bondi Junction. It was not cheap(roughly $800) but it comes with extra 2y warranty as a piece of mind which is nice gesture.

      • I had to send my speedmaster back to swatch Australia 4 times to fix a problem where he chrono wouldn't reset properly. By the fifth time, I insisted that it was sent back to Switzerland.
It returned, with new sratches - still not resetting property.

From memory the service cost $800.

Utterly useless. Gave up and live with the problem. It really tarnished my love for the watch.

        • +2

How old is your speedmaster? I would request replacement if they can't fix it.

        • @bion83:

I bought it used and I believe it didn't have a service history.

You're right though - I would expect a new one if it was new.

Edit: apologies for the typos in my previous post.

        • I have a plain 1120 movt. Seamaster - not the new 2500 coaxial.

I've had it for 10yrs, serviced 5yrs ago I think it was $150. That's it. 10yrs ago wasnt too much. Now its a bit much. Had no issue with it.

I wear it mainly at home now ironically because I'm wearing cheap watches outside but its had many thousands of km on it and lots of hours.

I think I've spent maybe $400 on cheapo watches and they're all surpringly great. That's Invictas Wengers and that cheap stuff.

I reckon at this point I'm buyng cheap watches to fill in stuff and I wear them on and off and come back to them.

I want an Orient diver of some sort now. Have a few Seiko 5s, Citizen Ecos but the lack of 'current fashion' limits them to beaters.

        • btw. let me tell you why I bought the Seamaster… I just like the design. The Pierce Brosnan model is just about perfect. I handle and buy other watches and realise they're all not that good in comparison.

To me its like that classic Porsche 911 (eg. the 993).

        • +1

Swatch Australia repair is completely useless. My Tissot was faulty straight out of the shop and had to be sent away for repairs. It came back worse and consequently it then made another 3 trips back to Swatch Australia before they just gave me a new one.

    • I have a Seamaster mechanical and my last service at Omega was something like $600. It wasn't terrible seeing as that's the first time I serviced it in 12 years. I don't listen to the maintenance plans or recommendations. I wear t 24/7 including in the shower, I service it when it stops. (The one time I had it serviced). Works perfectly.

      • Prices like this make me wish that someone plotted the data of OzBargainers annual income versus the price they pay for a watch an maintenance. It makes me wonder of expensive watches are truly just the realm of people that have more money than they know what to do with or what people are missing out on by paying so much for one

    • +1

If you know a watchmaker you can get it serviced for cheap! That's a big "if"..

  • +15

I like watches so will be interested if somebody has an interesting one. I wouldn't call it a power thing, but if somebody has an unusual watch I will take note and think, at the very least, that they are slightly more interesting for owning it.
Note this is irrelevant of the cost of the watch. I would be more interested in a $50 Vietnam era Timex than a $20k Rolex you can buy at any airport.

    • +16

      yeah, i kinda agree.

I'm a watch guy - my daily watch is a Longines Legend Diver, my dream watch is the IWC Portugieser Chronograph, but i notice watches, and those who have a nice or interesting watch i will think to myself "he know's whats what". Truth be told, i probably respect them a little more for their choice in watch, just like i respect people who wear colourful socks - kinda shows a little about their personality.

If you know a little about watches, i've broken the ice a number of times speaking with upper management in my company by showing interest in their watch. Most people like to talk about their timepiece if you care to have a conversation with them, to some people its like an artwork on their wall.

      • Agreed. Portugieser is a stunning watch too ;)
Women like handbags and shoes and flashy clothes, guys like cars and toys. (Generalising here).
This is/can be just another extension of that. If it makes you happy and you enjoy an expensive watch, why not!?

  • +3

Depends on what kind of watch it is? Mechanical watches are certainly meticulous. I think the charm comes from that. I kinda see them as an expensive accessories that can act as a time piece (cheaper digital watches can do just fine as a time piece). I can see how maintaining those can become a hobby as well.

As with whether I think it's a statement or reflection of personality, not really. I'd be like, that's a pretty watch and it goes well with the suit or dress. At best, I'd be like, that looks cool. The only time I'd think it's a statement is when I see something unexpected. An expensive watch with a suit is kinda expectable, something like Mickey Mouse watch with a suit probably would make me notice it.

I do have an automatic one, it's been collecting dust ever since. I got it as a present and I was never comfortable wearing it. I am rolling with a smartwatch right now, and I do enjoy the features it has. Though, that might be more to do with my personality.

  • I keep buying watches but never wear them.

in the last 5 years I've bought -

a tag heuer monaco, rolex OP, timex, cartier, daniel wellington, and a couple of others.

I like the look but get bored of them easily.

    • +13

Happy to take them off your hands seeing as they are just sitting there :P

    • China is getting pretty good ay … or you just didn't see the need to put a deposit down on that investment property.

      • +3

He didn't say they are genuine lol.

I'm assuming the Daniel Wellington isn't a fake.

    • Ive also got a few watches over the last few years. However the cost less than $150 each.

  • Had a little Casio watch all through school and Uni, took it off when it started scratching my work computer at my first job :(. Got an Apple Watch a year ago, quite like it. I just like to know the time, neither watch were about the "look".

  • Yes, but most people don't know or care about what watch you are wearing unless you are working in high finance or some similarly pretentious field. I love quality pieces and how intricate they can be, and aspire to own a few very nice watches in my life time. But, I am just as happy to wear a Seiko or Citizen. Good way to demonstrate a liking for fine quality and craftsmanship, and it is a nice extra detail for any outfit. I would never wear an electronic watch.

  • +2

A necklace and watch is the only commonly acceptable jewellery males can wear. Coupled with the very limited fashion choices, specific fashion choices including a wristwatch go a long way.

Most people don't know about watches but you can tell the difference between a giant $500 overpriced POS from City Surf, vs a mechanical classy leather band with suit jacket, etc.

    • +10

A Prince Albert is also acceptable

  • +3

As my name suggest i wear an outdoors watch with a compass, temp, barometer, altimeter that is solar powered its all part of the job :P
The most useful features is the compass way points so i can plot a track on my watch using the compass with out any external assistance. Comes in handy when fishing on the boat or on land.

    • +6

Pffft, a real prepper would use the stars to navigate and if it was cloudy they'd just use google maps.

      • +2

Pffft, good luck during nuclear winter and all that atmospheric dust

        • +2

I covered that under the cloudy conditions allowance … or you could just ask Siri for directions. Thought you were smrt.

        • +2

@kywst: I'm going to stand over there now.

        • +2

@altomic: Cause Siri won't survive the nuclear holocaust? or because things got a little too weird and you're uncomfortable? Only one of these is correct.

      • +1

No power no google maps! Old school maps is the way. Either way nuclear winter no navigation would happen you would be stuck under ground.

        • +1

Nuclear winter isn't radioactive, at least not especially after the first few weeks, and not in areas effected but well away from detonation sites. It is reduced sunlight due to airborne tiny particulates.
The threat is reduced crop production and famine, not directly to humans.

    • Which one? I have been looking for one with those specs though seems like most aren't waterproof. I want something I don't have to take off for a swim or a surf.

Or maybe I need to look in the plus $500 category?

I'm not interested in a smartwatch, just the features you've included (I don't like being too connected to my phone).

    • +1

But an EMP will kill all those functions on your watch, including the time. Better off with a mechanical watch, so at least you can still make those meetings on time lol.

    • +1

      Casio ProTrek Tough Solar?
Mine is at about 9yrs service and only just recently suffered it's first "fault" when the rubber ring thingy that holds the excess strap broke off - some simple heatshrink fixed that issue lol. Otherwise, everything including the capacitor battery thing still going strong.

More generally, digital watches FTW. I just find them way easier to see to now the time ofcourse just glancing down. Nothing about power and obviously being a non-metal digital watch is nothing exactly stylish like those expensive dress watches. It's just pure functional convenience.

      • +1

I have one of these, bought it because it was cheap and solar, and I was interested in moon phases, but I have seriously no idea how any of the features work. I mainly wear it to save my other watches from scratches when working on cars and the like.

While we are on it, been at least 6 years and same as you, apart from the small holder still works for ages in a dark drawer, not sure if it's a cap or battery though as it lasts ages without sunlight

  • +7

I wear a Citizen Ecodrive. I like it because it's simple and not at all flashy. While I think expensive automatic watches are interesting, they only show decadence to me. They cost a lot but don't work as well as their cheaper alternatives.

    • +5

Seiko 5's can be had quite cheaply. Take the SNK807. I got mine for about $70 I think. Quite nice, decent movement for the price and good value.

Autos don't have to be expensive

      • +3

But they're still not as accurate as a $12 Casio. My Citizen was $120 and looks similar, is more accurate, is more water resistant, and probably more reliable.

  • +2

Too poor to consider buying a watch over $150.

My most expensive watch… if you could call it a watch, is my Pebble Time Steel ($209) and that is literally the most expensive thing I've worn on a wrist. Does that count?

    • +3

Only counts if you bought it on OzBargain :D

    • +24

Not sure if it counts when you directly contradict yourself in a single post.

      • He's talking about future intentions and past actions, maybe you just need to… Watch the time.

    • How do you find the Time? I have been using a Pebble Classic for 2 years and it was great until it finally gave in to the screen issues, after 2 home fixes. Am thinking of a 2 with HR but only because with and without HR is the same price, I have to admit I don't know how it's different to the time
