ThinkPad Laptop E560 Vs E470 or Any Other?

Hi Guys

I can buy Thinkpad laptop models below and some others through work. Can you recommend which is better buy in view of will be used mostly from home and for some work purposes (excel, powerpoint), no gaming. The one with more longevity is better. Any other model that you can recommend will be great too.

Thinkpad E560 i5 6200U; 256GB SSD; 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz; Intel HD Graphics 520; 15.6in 1366 *768; 6cell lithium ion - $699
Thinkpad E470 i5 7200U 1TB 5400rpm 2.5inch; 8GB DDR4 Intel HD Graphics 620; 14in HD 1366 * 768 TN - $709

    1TB 5400rpm = fail. In this day and age, never buy a laptop with a spinning drive for the operating system.

  • E560 is a 15" with a 6th gen i5 intel processor
    E470 is a 14" with a 7th gen i5 intel processor

    Both have a low res screen are are comparable in performance, though the E560 has an SSD drive which is much faster than the older HDD in the E470

    For excel you definitely want atleast 1600x900 but preferably 1920x1080 (FHD) especially for the 15" model.

    Between the two, depends on the size you are comfortable with

    • it possible to customize with SSD drive for 150 - is it worth it?

      1920 x 1080 is another $130..thats getting expensive !

      • What size SSD? If you are savvy you could do it yourself for much less.

        I would recommend 1080 still regardless, the difference between 768 on those laptops is pretty big, and means you will fit more onto the screen in terms of excel.
        What is your budget? There have been recent sales on Dell Inspirons, Lenovo E and T series and Asus Zenbooks that will have an SSD and FHD screen for around $800-$1000

        • 256GB for SSD

          $800 tops - prefer around $700

          @bargainbargain:
          Sounds alright, the SSD itself starts at $120 for that size.
          I would recommend the 15" with the FHD upgrade though, but if you can hold out until a sale you should be able to get the 14" with SSD and FHD within your budget.

          Keep an eye out for something with these specs:
          CPU i5 or i7
          RAM 8GB or more
          SSD
          FHD screen (1920x1080)

          Can't go wrong and doable in your budget

          Another suggestion is try the Dell Outlet every few days to see if any refurbished Latitude 14 7000 come up, I often see computers in that spec, with a 7 hour battery life, for $800. They are refurbs but most of the time come looking like brand new

        • @blonky: thanks mate

  • always SSD unless you have strict requirement for a lot of HDD space. so E560

  • I bought my E560 from here
    Total = $928 - $85.11 (CashRewards)
    + $20 for 120Gb SSD (from Amazon)
    The E560 is a powerful larger laptop. I had bought it as I was in urgent need so pricing wasn't a huge thing. Given then you are using this for home and for a work purposes I don't think you'll need such a large laptop.
    At home you can connect it up to a external screen and stream it as a higher resolution and at work if you are presenting I don't think you'd be presenting with your screen. With a 15" you can count the pixels if you don't get FHD (1920x1080). It's best to to stick to 14" if you are working with only HD resolution.
    As you aren't moving around too much and do not require such transfer speed, it's not necessary to have an SSD.
    Just my input about E560 :) Good luck OP
