Great Deal considering android apps are going to be supported in future for this model:

    Source

    • +11

And the RAM can be upgraded to 4GB.

      • +4

Nice… So ideal for basic Microsoft Office Apps as well

          @Diji1:
Something is better than nothing I guess :D Besides keyboard is added bonus

        • +1

          @Diji1:
          Have you seen phones lately?!
It's rare for a phone to come with less than a 1080p screen, and I haven't seen a phone for a long time that was lower than 720p
With some even going up to 4k/2160p

So I would suggest phone apps aren't designed for low res screens anymore
Add to that, this laptop is only 720p as well. So I'd say it's a perfect resolution for phone apps

        • I couldn't imagine getting any real work done on this thing in Office. Even for a high schooler it'd be pretty frustrating. A five year old MBP for $500 might be better value.

        • @AustriaBargain:

          Perhaps this alternative then?

          https://products.office.com/en-au/office-online/documents-sp…

I am aware this is not fully-featured Office. But still it should be okay for casual editing.

        • +4

@Diji1: some Android apps are also designed for tablets as well which sometimes have lower resolution screen. In general I found many Android apps scale quite well over different resolutions.

        • -4

@Rail Rider95: Um .. so what? If you want to insist using touch screen phone apps on a laptop form factor is ideal then so be it.

          I don't think it is.

      • I took mine apart and I got stuck on the big screw on the mobo.

I couldn't lift the mobo up (because of big screw - you will know it when you see it - I got worried about the amount of force required to turn itand started chewing up the head of the screw), but it didn't look like you could upgrade the SSD (guessing soldered on mobo). I am guessing the memory is soldered on the mobo as well (like the Acer 720).

The only thing that looked like it could be upgraded was the separate wifi chip and the battery.

    • Looks like no Android love for the HP Chromebook 14" from 2015 ( model 0004TU ) yet so far from that list linked above :-(

      • I'm guessing it has something to do with NVIDIA Tegra K1, as other Chromebooks with the same processor miss out also. I'm assuming the HP G3 will never be able to run Android apps as a result, not too fussed as I only paid $160 for my new HP14 thanks to OzB :)

        • HP 14 for $160, great deal. From which deal was that, missed that one. Although I actually was one of the lucky ones to get a HP Slatebook 14 ( Full HD Touchscreen ) direct from HP delivered for $270 which had the K1 and also ran Android, I unfortunately moved that on to a friend ( regret that now ). My mistake, my HP Chromebook 14 ( released in 2013 but bought in early 2015 ) has a Celeron 2955U and 4GB ram, fast CPU but probably too old to make it compatible for Android.

        • @ozhunter68: Ah ok, yes yours is the model before the G3 with the much faster processor, wish they kept using the Celeron 2955U for mine.

I think it was for $169 from the same OzB deal you mentioned the HP Slatebook 14 deal, they ran out of stock so they offered me the HP 11, I then complained that other OzB members negotiated and got the HP 14 instead so they were kind enough to pick up the HP 11 and replace it with the HP 14.

        • @adr8:

Yep, that makes sense. I forgot it was that cheap then. I got a private message from a fellow OzBargainer who was returning a favour for me, so got it before it was even listed. The 2955U is a fast CPU and machine still running nice and fast. So you got a decent deal too then, HP chromebook 14 G3 for $169 delivered. Still working well for you with decent battery life?

        • +1

@ozhunter68: Still get 6-8 hours battery life at full brightness, use it mainly as my second laptop or for couch surfing. Works great, the Chrome OS is hassle free and boots up and ready to surf in 7-8 seconds.

  • Storage upgradable?

    • +4

Not sure if the 16GB eMMC NAND is upgradeable. It has an SD card slot, though.

      • No. No separate SSD.

  • obvious question - does this model run android apps?
a quick google couldnt tell me

    • +4

      too slow Thanks @jtrvk

  • -3

it's only a fantastic deal if you can upgrade ram and memory to SSD immediately and at a reasonable price which means it will still be about $300 after the upgrade.

    • +2

      Why?

    • +3

That's not the purpose of a chromebook. Buy a regular laptop with an SSD if you want a laptop with an SSD.

PS: RAM and memory are the same thing.

      • -1

Fyi: hdd/ssd are secondary memory, ram is primary so it basically made sense

        • -1

          No. No it didn't.

You meant to say "storage" and "memory" like how everyone else does so that this magical thing called language can be used and understood.

Consider the point that if you said "primary and secondary memory" it is understandable; if you used the terms "RAM/memory and Storage" it is understandable, however, when you mix generic and specific terms which share the same word, it is not clear what you are saying.

Anyway, grammar lesson over, I'm glad to see you understand that a Chromebook is not designed for what you're talking about, at least.

          Regards,

          The gent

Anyone actually have one of these? Memory in the C720, CB3 and C740 aren't upgradeable, I'd be surprised if the C730 was different (since it's just the enterprise version of the CB3).

It's 4GB max because it's the max this laptop was available in (generic specs were 4GB/32GB, but they made a budget version). But I doubt that means it's actually upgradeable.

    • +1

Think your right there. Probably both RAM and eMMC soldered on i"d say.

    • I quite like the other one the Lenovo N22 I think it has 4 gigs ram and 32 eMMC or SSD not sure and is $333 and the case is nicer and converts to a carry on as well.

  • +2

    Gawn

  • -1

    Intel Celeron

    Lel

    • -3

      Storage: 16 GB
      Graphics: Intel HD Graphics

      Lel indeed…
I mean look at the graphics description…
      Lel at 16GB storage

    • Better than Atom or a Rock chip 3288

      • -1

However not as good as a Core i3

    • +1

It's a quad core n2940 though, so will still be faster than the celeron n2840 and n3050 usually found on budget laptops.

Upvoting because I love my Chromebook.

Also blah blah blah cheap, blah blah long battery life, blah blah Android coming so tonnes of shit, blah blah online Microsoft Office, blah blah no viruses, all that shit I'd get into if I had the time.

  • Probably nobody else was confused by the specs:
    "Wireless 802.11 (a,c)"

According to http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs… it supports 802.11ac

EDIT: The Chromebook in that review has different specs :|

    Chromebooks are freaking awesome

I personality use the Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 Baytail (2014) one from JBHIFI that was on sale for AUD$250 (refub)

I recommend to install galliumos ( https://galliumos.org/ ) instead of ChromeOS
and to setup the /home (users/my documents folder) on your MicroSD 16-32gb card (Buy that extra)

Even after installing extra linux apps it still came to 13 gig of the 16gb SSD

    • Looking into Gallimos, looks interesting, thanks for that.

agree for non serious work fun fun like chop sueyy, chromies are so good. For serious work like corporate or government, try Windows 10

oh…pum pum pum pum intel recommends Win 10

      • Why do you find Linux is not fine for serious work ??

Libreoffice/Skype/Office365 via web/Google Docs via web/Wire/Email/Firefox/Chrome is all on Linux for Business use

Now out of stock - disappointed!

  • Bought after eastern culture's US$115 find on Amazon 18 months ago. Good books that held their value.

  • Awesome deal. Bought one at 9:30 PM last night. Ready for pickup today.

    • Hi Bystander which store did you nominate to get it from - each one in South Aus tells me there is none in stock - maybe if I nominate a different store that has stock it might work for me….?

  • damn out of stock

  • Not out of stock for me.
    Got it next day.

However will not update, so stuck at:
    Version 46.0.2490.82 (64-bit)
Platform 7390.68.0 (Official Build) stable-channel gnawty
    Firmware Google_Gnawty.5216.239.34

No android apps (must be on vr 53)

    • +1

Are you using a 3G/4G dongle or wifi? It'll only update over wifi.

      • I'm android tethering so that might be it.

I'll try and update with wifi tonight.

        Cheers

        • +1

On normal wifi and updating - thanks Chateau!

    • +1

Mine came with Chrome OS v46. It was also rebooting endlessly. So I signed in as a Guest and it stopped rebooting. From there I updated it. The first update took it to v53 and then a second update took it to v57. All over WiFi. Works perfectly now.

  • how can I still buy one of these ?It seems that soe people can. SA dont have stock

  • This is a very good deal. My Dell Chromebook 11 cost more than this, second-hand!

Those people sooking about Android apps must be forgetting that Android on Chrome is a completely new platform. Uses, as the marketing droids say, are only limited by your imagination.

  • Dam link not working… looks like they took it offline. Was after one for the folks.
