Canon PowerShot G5 X Digital Camera for $636.65 @ JB Hi-Fi

100

Was looking for a replacement camera for my parents ageing DSLR, requirements were to find something compact with a viewfinder. In the search I came across the G5X and saw that JB were selling it for quite a low price.

Local retailers were selling for around $900-100 mark and grey imports were going for around $800.

Managed to get further 7.5% discount with gift cards (through work) and my parents will be claiming GST back, so absolute steal.

Not as cheap as the cashback deal back in December but still a good price.

  • This or G7x Mark ii for same price at JB?

    • If you don't need the EVF, articulating screen and bulker grip then the G7x may be a better choice.

    • i thought higher number is better? so if same price ofcourse go to G7 than g5?

      • often not with Canon stuff.
1DXM2>5DM4>6D in the full frame line..

      • I believe they have the same sensor, however the processor is newer on the G7. So faster AF and buffer.

  • I i wouldn't have Lumix LX100 (and G7x markI)already I would be all over this camera, good deal,thanks.

  • Is this camera better or worse than the Sony RX100?

    • Depends on what you do

      • To use as a travel camera, taking mostly still images?

        • -3

Any modern phone camera can be used as a travel camera.

        • @TightAssDrake: Do you mean the image quality in my iPhone 7 is almost the same as these compact digital cameras? No point buying a camera just use my phone?

        • @TightAssDrake: yeah nah

        • +1

@ttkc: Actually if all you need is a wide angle lens for daylight pics and happy to shoot with no manual controls, an iphone 7 is fine. Keep in mind this is only a 1" sensor, not APS-C.

        • +1

          @Orpheus:

I doubt the user will even notice the difference between the two.
All i can say iPhone 7 photos will be good enough for Instagram

  • Nice find! Which reward program does your work offer to get 7.5% at JB?

    • Our work uses Reward Gateway.

  • Nice. I'm looking for a mirrorless myself for my trip to Europe…anyone seen any deals ? Looking to spend under 1200 with lenses.

    • there you go. Taking into account of the TRS and you should have plenty of choice under $1200

      • I was taking into account the TRS with the $1200 price. Trouble is I leave in mid July…so I need to wait until 2 months before to buy (has to be within 60 days they said)

        • I thought it was 30 days?
Anyway, just wait until you're within that time frame to buy, I'm sure there will be other sales…

    • from same sale, this is tiny and DLSR-good, especially with a nice Oly or Pana prime lens too: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/olympus/olympus-e-pl8…

      • I was very much looking at the Olympus OM-D M10. Body is about $500. But I hear a lot of people complain about the oly menus. :/

Looking for advice on lenses as well…Looking to get 2. Thinking something like a pancake lens then a 55mm….I'd love a zoom lens but I don't want to carry around such a big piece…

I've never had a camera with changeable lenses. Love some advice.

        • Unless you want to spend $ on different lens and do more in photography. Stick with a high end compact like this which will give you flexibility of taking great photos in any situation.

        • @mcp2kpro:

I'm pretty keen to do more photography with the camera hence my want for interchangeable lenses. Also will be helpful for things I do regarding work here and there.

        • @pisoj1: fair enough. Sony A7 series is the best in the mirrorless game with full frame & option to use many lens makes & models with adapter. Olympus & Fujifilm makes good looking mirrorless but they have much smaller sensor (slightly bigger than a compact). They are also not much cheaper than Sony.
But if you want SLR cameras, Canon & Nikon are most popular. They are slightly cheaper & more lens choice compare to mirrorless.

        • @mcp2kpro: Body alone of the A7 exceeds his $1200 budget. For beginners start off with a basic kit and worry about the gear later once you get the technique down. You can also often get second hand gear for a significant price cheaper and I generally recommend it as a starting point to understand your shooting style.

        • @MrDerrickC: If you shop around and wait for sale, you can get the Sony A7 with kit lens 28-70mm for around $1200 or a bit more. Its full frame and future proof than those entry level mirrorless kit from other brands.
Also SLR option is on table which is cheaper and more lens choices.
