LOVING your "early mail" on catalogs

  • +2

Thank you for the early warning OP! I'll be stockpiling.

  • +33

    these prices are nuts.

    Slow clap.

  • +2

Dry roasting is so easy in a wok. Just keep flipping them so they don't burn.

    Is $13 good for pistachios?

    • +2

Yep definitely. Pistachios are usually that price for 400g at Coles/Woolies

    • and dry roasting at home is much healthier than buying the dry roasted stuff

      • +1

        Thanks x2.

I do it in small batches as I assume they won't keep once they've been roasted.

Aldi does it again. I walnut miss this opportunity to stock up ;)

    • +30

      Might cashew in store.

      • +5

And here we see Darwinian evolution going off the rails…

      • +1

        That cracked me up.

    • +29

One thing for sure is that at these prices they won't cost you an almond a leg

  • I dont normally shop at Aldi, so I was just wondering are these bagged pistachios (that are usually fresher) or scoop and weigh pistachios? Thanks in advance :)

    • +3

Bagged. Aldi does not sell nut via scoop and weigh method

      • Oh thanks heaps for that. Most of the time scoop and weigh pistachios arent very fresh at all and chewy etc. Bagged ones are way more fresher. Thanks again :)

        • +8

A member for over 5 years & you don't shop at Aldi? That's nuts.

    • +1

I dont normally shop at Aldi, so I was just wondering are these bagged pistachios

It's ALDI, you have to bring your own bag.

I usually just scoop them into my sweater and take them to the cashier.

      • I use the hood of my hoodie

    • Yep Aldi nut come pre bagged

It's good to know that the old man just in front of you hasn't handled your nuts after scratching his shitty arse

  • +7

Far kernels, that's cheap for Walnuts.
Natural Cashews 1.2kg for $16.99, how does this compare to the artificial cashews?

    • Pardon?

      • +2

        Whoosh

  • +8

For those with access to Costco, they have nuts from the USA at cheaper prices.

From memory, Almonds are also $16.99 per bag. BUT…
    Aldi bag 1kg
    Costco bag 1.36kg

    • I usually by the Aldi ones in between my visits to Costco but I have to say the Costco pistachios are better.
With the last 1.36kg bag we did not find a single sealed (completely unopened) pistachio!

      • And even if you did, Costco has lifetime return policy…you can take the sealed nut back to them and they will crack it open for you :P

  • +7

For those who regularly eat nuts, it's cheaper to buy on special at the supermarkets, like woolies reguarly has chashews for 9.90 for 750gr. And almond on specials which from memory works out cheaper as well. So stock up during specials is better.

Nut stores also may be cheaper too, but they are mostly in bulk sold by weight, so not sealed for freshness.

  • Good idea to eat nuts at least weekly for good cholesterol (HDL)

  • +1

Aldi don't take AMEX, they can suck my N**s

    • +5

Careful, Aldi fanybous are almost as bad as hillary supporters

    • +1

Got caught out last week. Didn't realize that before

AND they add a surcharge to any electronic payment method that uses the Visa system — anything with a chip I think.

So, even paying with an ING Orange debit card, which goes through the Visa system, gets a 0.5% surchage.

Not much, but of course I don't want to pay it, especially on a $100+ special.

Aldi is thus one of the few places where I pay using an old fashioned swipe ATM card.

      • +3

I haven't paid the surcharge when inserting a chip card and selecting savings rather than credit. Just remember you can't do a chargeback this way, but for groceries I don't see this as an issue.

      • AND they add a surcharge to any electronic payment method that uses the Visa system — anything with a chip I think.

Nope, I use Visa and have never been charged a surcharge.

        • Surcharge is for CC. Use savings, etc.

    Any Aussies sourced nuts?

    • +7

Probably about 12 million pairs… (I'll let myself out)
      :D

      • ummm depends on how many owners calls themselves aussie :o))

What about men that have had their nuts taken away from overbearing women?

        • +6

          Assaulted nuts.

        • A salted nuts

          FTFY

    • woolworths periodically discounts aussie walnuts & almonds

Aldi just opened today in my suburb 😀

    • +1

I take it you're "justhooked" on them?

      • 👍 definitely spent $400 today

  • +1

    time to make pistachio icecream

  • Being an ozbargainer, any further ways to save more on Aldi purchases? Like gift cards etc? Can't even pay with cc without fee right?

    • Pay with cash.
      Only way to save.

    • +11

Buy eftpos gift card using credit card from Coles when they have 2000 bonus flybuys points offer. Then use that card to shop at Aldi. In this case it only accepts SAV not CR as payment method and hence no surcharge payable.
      Typically you'll have

      • Credit card points for the $55.95 spend to buy the gift card
      • 2000 flybuys point back which is worth $10
      • $50 to spend at Aldi without card fees, but effectively the funds are sourced from a credit card.

Note that it only applies to EFTPOS gift card offer, not the prepaid credit card one like what we had a week or 2 ago.

  • +5

I always eat them in one sitting and end up feeling salty and disgusted with myself.

    • +2

I bought a 600gram bag today. ate 400grams of them. no ragrets.

    • +4

Don't eat them all at once, you'll be a 'shell' of your former self

    • Respect bro!

  • +3

Aldi pistachios are not very nice. I think there must be grades and the Aldi ones must be cheap stuff.

    • +2

      Correct.

    • +1

Probably true, though I've paid more and haven't had better.

And someone above mentioned, the scoop & serve supermarket variety often taste "soggy", which I'd agree with.

Also, Aldi's suppliers change frequently, so the quality you get one week (for good or bad) might be quite different to the quality you get the next week.

    • +1

The best ones were the iranian ones, but it was difficult to get them after the sanctions came in place. I havent seen them come back either.

      • +1

Look for them in middle eastern/Indian stores. I often buy from there when available.

  • +7

im gonna have a crack at this pun thing

    • +5

Let me know when you think of one.

    • +2

      Nut now! I'm busy…

      • +2

Did i cashew at a bad moment?

  • Nice. Thanks for posting.

  • Are these usually really expensive?

  • Thanks, how do the cashews compare with Woolies? Woolies would be cheaper when the ~$10 per 750g bag special is on, which seems to be reasonably regularly…

  • +1

They are sold for $25 kg but glad they reduced the price. Not sure if this includes Macadamia. I love Macadamias.

  • Cant believe people are going nuts for nuts

  • +1

    Goddamit I love pistachios.

  • Wondering where the Pistachios are from. The US ones are fully bleached and fed so much water they are fat but not much taste.
We have some great growers in Aus so hope they are getting them from them.
BTW 20-25 years ago Pistachios were selling for $25-30 a Kg

    • BTW 20-25 years ago Pistachios were selling for $25-30 a Kg

No they weren't, I used to buy cashews and pistachios for $8KG.

It's only in the last 15 or so years the price shot up, like everything else in Aus.

  • What is country of origin? Ta

    • +2

I don't think Tightarse makes his own nuts.

      https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-wed-24-…

On the package there is a Product of Australia logo (bottom right corner). They appear to be grown and produced in Australia according to our new food labelling standards

      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/groceries/country-of-origi…

      • +3

i noticed aldi switched the labeling on many of their packages from china to saying they are packaged in belgium from local & imported ingredients. sounds like new zealand's dodgey packaging country of origin saga revisited.

        • +3

Same with Coles tins of red kidney beans, lentils, borlotti beans, chick peas etc. - suddenly they are packaged in Italy but come from other countries.

  • Thank you.

The growth of the Pistachios price is faster than the property market in the recent years. Hope the Pistachios bubble would burst sooner than the property market bubble.

  • These prices were already on the nuts in Weston ACT this morning. I bought 3 packets of each. I reckon they will sell out tomorrow lunch time.

  • The price of Pistachios at Aldi as posted is a SENSATIONAL one.

I am currently in Iran and just a couple of days ago bought about 4 kgs for family and friends back in Oz and I am regretting that.

I reckon my average price would have been over $ 15 Aussie equivalent.

The quality obtained here may be better. Iran does produce 77% of the world's crop.

    • You may have a lot of eating then because I am not sure that you will be allowed to bring them in Australia through customs.

      • i reckon it can be brought in with vacuumed bags.

        • doubt it, you dont know what bugs, spores or seeds may be in the nuts, and neither does aqis, they will happily destroy them for you tho

          Make sure you declare it

        • @dcarbonetti:
In case they don't allow it just sit there and eat them all before you go through ;-)

  • +1

    $ 15 per kg.

  • Just bought 400g in a Perth Woolies vege section for $8 (Select brand), thought that was pretty good.

    • +2

No, that equates to $20.00 kg, which is $7.01 more than this deal.

  • Costco has the best tasting pistachios, $22ish for 1.2kgs.. not as cheap as this though, will pick up a few bags on wed :)

  • Thanks OP, managed to grab the last 3 bags in my store, cheering!

  • went to the melb cbd store at lunch for pistachios - all gone

  • went to my local aldi on the way from work…….no pistachios. :(

  • The Pistachios were $9.99 for a 600g bag at Aldi Brookvale today, which equates to $16.65 per kg.

As far as I knew Aldi specials were the same across all stores.

    • +1

those are the regular sized packs. usually towards the front of the store where they have the food "special buys" is where you'll you'll find the the large bags of pistachios, walnuts, cashews, almonds

  • Just remember this so picked up 3 bags at my local still plenty left also a lot of snow gear got some thermals camouflage ones

  • No pistachios at my local :(
    picked up the other three
