320GB-1TB External Hard Drive - Seagate/WD/Samsung preferred

Hey all,

Just seeing if I could get some help here for the cheapest 320GB-1TB external hard drives around.

Purpose: Looking for 2 external hard drives
1st drive: A general back-up hard drive, and also to store Wii back-ups.
2nd drive: Storing movies/tv shows

My preferences are as follows:
1) USB powered (2.5") - from what I've read, all 3.5" require external power. I was considering taking the 1TB HDD out of my current computer (don't really need that much), and converting it into an external hard drive and just using that, but since it seems all 3.5"s (internal hard drives) require external power, I decided I should just go with a 500GB 2.5" USB powered one.
2) Preferred Brand: Samsung/Western Digital/Seagate (decided after reading this: http://everyjoe.com/technology/whats-the-best-500gb-external…)
3) LED lights showing data transfer/activity
4) eSATA? Not compulsory, but I've been hearing good things about it (is it only available with 3.5"?)

I've done some searching on ozbargain posts, and the cheapest I could find was this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/27836 - posted at the end of June (Seagate 500GB for $59 from lapyking).
Also found these: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28705 - Samsung? 500GB for $65 + shipping
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/26435 - Seagate 500GB for $69 from lasoo (this one still seems to be on, also has 1TB for $9 more, $78)

1) StaticICE prices: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=500gb+exter… - Cheapest seems to be roughly $73ish

2) eBay search: http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%25… - seem to go for between $68 and $85

Also just wondering if anyone has any opinions/experiences about Medion hard drives? Saw this too: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/29416

3) http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/30807 - also found this. I realise this one requires external power, but just wondering what people think of Hitachi for external drives?

I'm not in a MAJOR hurry, but I'm hoping to get one within the next week. That's why even though I've found some fairly decently priced ones, I'm asking here to make sure I get the best possible price.

I do the same as you for storing wii backup.
    - I bought Seagate 500gb at $65 from officework(as on your third link, price match).

Just make sure you got 2.5" and it's compatible with your wii.
    (search in google)

I think if it's under $70, should be ok for 500GB

    • Thanks for your reply! Does the drive work well? Encountered any problems? Does the hard drive have any LED lights showing activity or file transfers?

And just to be a bit clearer on things, for your pricematch, did you just tell the Officeworks staff member about the website, and got them to check it up and have a look? I might just get the 1TB one, since it is only $78 (compared to $69 for the 500GB). I'll try to get that price-matched too.

And I will check Google to see if it is compatible with the Wii. Thanks!

  • Can't find anywhere to price-match the 1TB Seagate one from MLN. Looked at Clive Peters, DSE, Harvey Norman, Officeworks, Bing Lee, The Good Guys.

    The one I'm looking for: 1TB Seagate - http://www.lasoo.com.au/offer/seagate-external-hard-drive/4j…
    or: 500GB Iomega - http://www.lasoo.com.au/offer/portable-hard-drives/iomega-po…

Closest I can find to the Seagate 1TB is these two:
    Harvey Norman: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1255509326501/seagate…
    and
    DSE: http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4c89236e03aa72e…
I think DSE and HN have the same one, but it's not the same as the MLN one.

Can't find the Iomega one at all though.

That Seagate 1TB Desktop Hard Drive is 3.5" and requires external power.

      • Ah you're right.

I might wait another week and see if another bargain pops up here.
or I'll see if I can find out a bit more on the Iomega, or see if it can be price matched anywhere. Haven't been able to find that anywhere at all.

  • I'm gonna wait.

I'll get a 1TB External 2.5" as the general back-up drive + wii back-ups, and either another 1TB for my sister who wants to store a lot of movies/tv shows.

But as it is, I'm still open to prices for anything between 320GB and 1TB. Most important criteria is that they require no external power.
