Good deal, but I'm pretty sure my ears aren't this good.

You will be very surprise once you have a right setup and you can't go back to inferior music. My advice is just walk away.

      • +5

Surprised you'd recommend 'Walking Away' by Craig David

        What if your name's Renee?

      • +2

The Humungus: There has been too much Craig David. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your eneloops, the bargains, and your marvel avengers discs and I'll spare your ears. Just walk away and we'll give early access to the best deals. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.

    • I'm sure you'll be able to hear the difference.

HD800 also on sale for $999, can possibly be modded into 800S with some weird cork/foam mods (there's some posts about this).

    • +1

Cool. Just a little diy modding, tear apart your thousand dollar headphones. Stick some cork in, bit of foam. Sounds legit. :p

    • Thanks. Would rather save $500 and mod the HD800 or EQ it. Cheers

Would anyone who can afford this stuff consider adopting me?

    • Haha use zippay for the purchase. Pay it off over 6 or 12 months. What I'm doing with the Hifiman Edition x v2

  • Think I'll save up for electrostatic phones and amp, instead
If spending big might as well go all out?

not an audiophile but my last audio headset (earphones) being the MEE Duo purchased for around ~$50 was significantly better (imho) than anything i bought before which included a bose qc15.

Can anyone justify (beyond the subjective manner) what would bring a headphone set to be priced more than the latest iphone?

what components are there that are high in costs???

    thanks

    • Sennheiser could do what other can't and they believe it is worth that much. I could not justified it either until I bought the Hd800 today. It sounds very nice, :), and I do believe it worth 1K. As to the 800s that I have tested in the shop, it sounds very similar and I won't be going balance amp and so I go with the HD800.

I let my friend listen to it and she said it worth it. You can not get that sound from a 1k speakers.

In short, the better the drivers, tuning and build the higher the cost. Only you can tell whether the costs are justified. It's all subjective. There are many headphones out there better than the MEE Duo.

I'd recommend starting with mid tier headphones rather than going all out. You need to find out what sound signature you like (i.e. Balanced, bass heavy, treble heavy, mid focused, bright, dark etc). Then find out what qualities you like in the sound.

      The mid tier headphones I'd recommend are Hd600, HD650, DT880, Dt250, he 400 and k712

I've owned all of the above and The Dt250 is my favourite mid tier and closed set. Followed very closely by the Hd600.

I'd suggest you do a little bit of research.

you will have the headphones for the next 15 years ….. iphone probabaly not ……. listening to you good music will relax you .. the iphone like the bell for pavlovs dog….. you will will in stress waiting for it to ring and receive a message …..i see people salivate on the train when they hear the ping from a phone even if it's not theirs but someone else's……. the headphone will enrich your life more than an expensive phone …… get good headphones and a cheap phone …….

what components are there that are high in costs???

None. But as you can see from the comments above that doesn't matter - if a product is exclusive enough people will dodge that issue and do the manufacturer's own bidding.

There's no doubt these might be great products, and value is subjective, but the most expensive component here is the goodwill.

  • I bought a paid of Logitech UE6000 a few years back for $99 AUD and i've been pretty happy with them; there's definitely something to be said for getting a "good" pair of headphones, especially over-ears.

About a week later though, this deal popped up and i've had recurrent pangs of opportunity cost/buyers remorse ever since. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172168

They are just the most aesthetically pleasing headphones I've ever seen.

Personally, I think the HD598s look terrible. Different strokes for different blokes!

  • That's an $1100 sale. Huge margins they're losing. I wonder if they lose money at this price, or if the margin was so big they still don't lose money?

    • +1

If I had to guess, I'd say price and what the suppliers get from each sale is dictated by Sennheiser. Otherwise, the margin's so big.

  • I reckon at this price point they are still over priced, i would want them for about the $1200-1300 mark.

    • I bet if it was $1200 you would remark the over priced and it should have been $1000.

    • buying summit-fi products, I reckon you gotta try it out instore and feel your rational thinking melt away after hearing the sound emitted from the cans.
Personally I won't buy things at this price range from reviews alone, too much $ at stake.

  • Any opinions about the Fostex ones on here?

    https://www.massdrop.com/audiophile/drops

    • Less detail, soundstage, coherence, imaging and midrange with those Fostex headphones. But you get much better bass response (sub, mid, quantity and extension) with the Fostex and possibly a more even treble response as there's no 6k spike. Depends on your tastes but if you're primarily going to use the headphones for gaming and movies I'd take the Fostex anyday and pocket the savings.
