Prepaid TravelSIM+ with Bonus 1GB Data for Europe for $25 @ Austpost

30

Saw this in the current Austpost catalogue at the Qld Garden City post office. Assume is nationwide? This is half the normal price (the normal $50 price isn't really attractive), and with the bonus 1GB data could be useful to someone going to visit Europe.

I didn't pick up a copy of the catalogue so can't check the full T&C which should be on page 3. The page on auspost.com.au only has the price but no mention of the bonus 1GB. Hopefully someone has the catalogue and can confirm how long the 1GB will be valid for.

I used these last year when I traveled to Europe, also when they were half price in an Aus Post catalogue. They're not the cheapest way of getting overseas mobile access, the most attractive part of them I found was free SMS text messaging between SIMs (I bought three of them). Note, though, that you must have more than $10 credit on each one for the free SMS. For me, they came pre-loaded with $5 credit so I still needed to top them up to access free messaging, with the minimum top-up amount being $25. I did find the online management of them pretty easy and topping up with an AU credit card was simple. Bottom line: shop around before you buy one of these. There are cheaper options (e.g. buy a prepaid SIM in the country you're visiting) but this one may have one or two options you find useful.

  • Note that data is US$0.25 per MB. So you're looking at AU$333 per GB. Not cheap for data-only travellers. :-(
If you call or SMS it's not bad, but I usually get a local SIM & use internet messaging or calling.

  • I travelled in March for 3 weeks in europe (Paris, Italy, London) and found the best way was to buy Vodafone pre-paid ($50 plan) and pay $5 roaming fee per day. I used about 23GB of data and unlimited calls. It costed me $150.
I had to upgrade the plan from $50 to $60 after 5days due to data usage and that gave me double data for a month (25Gb)

    • Does that work for a prepaid plan?? I thought it was only for post plans?

      • sorry my mistake. I took SIM only month-to-month. Used it for 28days and after that cancelled it

  • Don't bother chasing up a catalogue. Page 3 just refers you to their website "For full terms and conditions".

I was just in Europe for a month and by far the best prepaid SIM to use is the 3 UK SIM if you happen to start in the UK to get your hands on one.

It was 12GB for use all through Europe as they have no additional roaming charges in the EU.

  • anyone been to Italy and can recommend anything?

I went into a Vodafone store when I arrived and bought a SIM with S'Call Super prepaid. It is the easiest for foreigners.

Cost 30euros including activation and first recharge. Additional recharges if you stay more than 4 weeks are 10euros per 4 weeks.

Provides 4GB of data, generous calls and texts within Italy. Doesn't include Australia in the list of calling countries but I used WhatsApp to call family in Oz. Lots of people in Italy use WhatsApp as well.

      Data can be topped up, e.g. 2GB 10euro, 5GB 19euro.

      http://www.vodafone.it/portal/Privati/Tariffe-e-Prodotti/Tar…

It allows tethering. This may be important to you - some plans don't include it except as a 6euro/day add-on!

There were some other better value Vodafone options but the store may not sell it to you as it requires the Italian equivalent of a Tax File Number (Codice Fiscale). The staff may just make one up for you or they may not.

In Czech Republic, I bought a data only SIM for Visitors, 10GB for 800CZK (about $au30). WhatsApp is great. Vodafone Shop was in the Airport so it was super easy and super quick. https://www.vodafone.cz/en/calling/prepaid-cards/data-sim-fo…

    • Key question is, how long will you be there?
2nd question - do you want just data (can use WhatsApp, Skype etc. for calls & msgs), or do you want actual phone calls & SMS?

If you're only doing 1 country, look at local networks & buy a prepaid SIM. You can research at home but often you'll have to buy when you arrive.
If you're doing a multi-country tour, also good to look at an international SIM or a good roaming package (eg. 3 UK's Europe pack).

We did nearly 7wks in Italy & got a TIM International plan (basically Italy's Telstra-equivalent). Was a prepaid, month-to-month deal for travellers but you got 10GB per month for 15Euro/mth (+ a SIM cost). Paid upfront & got 2 SIMs & 2mths of data each (so 20GB each) for around AU$100. You do have to buy in-store in Italy, though, as it's a registered deal.

      • Since last week, there's a new law in effect that does not allow roaming charges within the EU any more.
So now it's even easier and cheaper to just buy a local sim card in your first country and use it all around. No need for any kind of international plan or roaming package any more :)

  • Anyone know of a cheap sim for hong kong and japan?

    • +1

I'd buy a local sim at both locations if possible.

Depending on what order you're doing them in and how many days your spending in each depends on what I'd suggest.

In Hong Kong Data is cheap with some plans like the equivalent of AU$3-4 per GB with china mobile offering an unlimited plan for AU$5 (equivalent) with 10 days unlimited data that's speed limited to 384kbps (more than enough for maps, Spotify, Facebook and ozbargin). I'd suggest CSL but that's just my preference/what I've used.

Japan is harder to get a sim with some stores at the airport selling them for around ~3,000 jpy for a sim with 1GB and ~5,000 for a sim with 3GB. I've used the SoNet sim which is either sold in vending machines or at a stand depending on the airport but it's not cheap.

If you were going to HK first and then to Japan for 7 days (or less) then there is a roaming sim from HK with unlimited data for AU$40 (equivalent) which is valid for 7 days.

I'd have a look at http://prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Prepaid_SIM_with… for more.

Vodafone $5 roaming also offers good value but again you'll need to sign up to a postpaid plan for a month. If you were going away for 20 days then it would be $160 total (with the $60 plan) that includes unlimited calls, sms and 11GB data.

  • Was in Italy last year and used "Tim for tourists". You purchase it here ,download the voucher, go to a Tim shop ( sort of like Optus here)and it worked well .30 eu for a month but no recharge facility. However flying to Italy tomorrow and have bought both the Tim option and the Aust post one. The Aust post one to message/ring daughter who also has one and also to use when we go to Croata. Wife to use the Tim one. Looking forward to a month in Italy. The Tim option does not work in other countries.

  • Wonder if there are any cheap versions for the US? They have to be one of the most expensive (compared to the rest of the world) out there I think. :(

  • I just received two of these 3UK Data sims from MyMemory for about AU$45 each. 12GB Data with no roaming charges in 42 EU (and AU) countries. Both activated fine in Australia (some 3 Sims need to be activated in the UK first).
    https://www.mymemory.co.uk/3-payg-4g-trio-data-sim-pack-incl…
Note: Postage took nearly 4 weeks so you do need to plan ahead.

    • That looks interesting.
Do you need to activate in Australia before you leave, or can you wait until to get to Europe?
What is the process for activation?

      • Hi Gaz, I only activated to test them prior to leaving as our connectivity was fairly critical and I couldn't afford to be caught short overseas. I believe they can be activated in any of the 42 'Feel at Home' Countries. Activation was as simple as plugging them in and allowing connection to happen. Make sure you select/ allow roaming on your device for them to connect and function correctly.

  • Anyone know how I can get mobile data in St Petersburg? Thanks.
