Carsales, eBay Scams

Hi guys i would like to say BEWARE OF SCAMMERS nearly got scammed from carsales with a fake Ad on a car and fake ebay site http://ebay-buyer-protection-program.motors-au.net/Australia…

which is mean't to end .com.au this Wonder if anyone ever got this?

Hi and sorry for my late reply,

I am writing to confirm that the car is in excellent condition, the bodywork is immaculate, no dents or hidden defects and there is no outstanding finance on the car, also the car comes with a full service history. The price, including door to door delivery, is only $13,200 negotiable.

This is a very good price because I want a quick sale.

I must sell the car because I've just moved in Barcelona, Spain with my job and I have a two years contract to work here… so I'm forced to sell it.

The car is located at a local storage point in Southport, TAS and from there will be delivered. You will have 5 days inspection period, while you'll be able to see and inspect the car before buying it. If you don't like the car after you will receive it or is not like I've describe it, you can reject the deal.

The car was advertised on eBay as well and I would prefer closing the transaction only through eBay for our own protection. The payment method will be bank transfer because this type of payment is very safe. In this way both of us will start the deal with good faith so we can take it to a smooth end.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Kind regards,
Katie Roberts

Are you saying that that link is fake? Wow that is hard to spot, I would have been taken in by that.

  • "The payment method will be bank transfer because this type of payment is very safe."

How is this method very safe? With Ebay go with Paypal or cash on inspection. Although I would not turn up to a storage point in Southport, TAS by myself with 13k.

    • Don't ever accept paypal for the vehicle you sell on ebay!

      • Yes selling is bad (if they open a dispute you are in trouble), but buying should be okay.

  • If you noticed the site there's no search option or Categories you can click on. Also the contact us and live help from the top right is different from the real Ebay site when you click on it.

I hope you passed this on to ebay?

  • Guys
This is his new trick don't be cheated by this kind of email
    Hello,

I am writing you to confirm that the car is in excellent condition with no dents or hidden defects and there is no outstanding finance on the car, also the car comes with a full service history. The Full price, including door to door delivery, is $14,900.

The car was advertised on eBay as well and prefer to close this transaction only through eBay for our own protection. The payment method will be bank transfer because this type of payment is very safe. In this way both of us will start the deal with good faith so we can take it to a smooth end.

I'm waiting to hear from you soon.

    Kind regards,

    Christian

After I chat with him and ask him give me the copy
Of ergo slip and ID,he gave me a fake Australian passport
Copy please note that the real passport copy comes with
Watermark but the one he sent is not. Secondly,he scanned ergo
Slip as color scan but it's only Rta logo is colorful,
all the other information is typying by himself. For example,
As a color scan, the year, make, model and other titles should appear
as blue printing but this guy use all black printing. The - formed is also wrong
    Compare with the genuine one.

If you try to ask him give you a high def copy of the document, he will pretent he is
angry and question you dnt have money to buy that.
I have forwards the fake eBay email to eBay.
Furthermore, do not use his email link, I tried to use the link to fake live eBay customer
Support. This is the best part, the fake customer support
will ask your transaction Id and try to bull shit the buyer protection
Scheme. He tried to convince you to pay the money, but don't do that because
I assume once you transfer your money, the money will go into his account and never
    refund to you.
The customer support will give you his name as well, but i can also say I am Obama as well,
    Please do not trust that!

I hope this information can help you guys

  • BANK transfer - Ebay cant and does not protect you against fraud here. Thats the FIRST and ONLY warning you should heed

  • yeah i got that email in the original post once - exactly the same word for word. The name was not Katie though, it was a guys name. I was new to this so i asked a few questions wanting to know on the off-chance that it might be legit. His replies were even worse, and i left it at that. a few weeks later carsales emailes me saying that due to you having previous contact with this seller, we want to inform you that this is a scam.

For those on carsales, if they ask you to inquire by that carsales form, it usually means theres something going on. I know some people dont like to be hassled on the mobile, but you are selling a car, this doesnt sell through email.

Common sense helps. if they're advertising on a website and want you to go through other payment methods that arent in line with that website….why would you? very simple.

  • Are there any signs that indicate scams on carsales? Do they concentrate on certain car types or brands? I'd be more inclined to use carsales over eBay when buying a used vehicle so am interested in avoiding scammers at all costs.

Hehe - I bought my last car on the trading post back when they still printed it!

    • The scam is simple - they target people who are silly enough to buy a car sight-unseen.

  • This is a very old scam, and is used on Carsales and Trading Post as well. I am a regular helper on the eBay forums and we laugh sometimes at the exotic stories that they come up with as reason for selling the cars. The oil rig ones are probably most amusing.

For the record, there is no Buyer Protection if you pay by Paypal either… they do not cover motor vehicles or items that are picked up (refer current Paypal User Agreement)
